1:41 This is the feature done on a 9 year old Drew in Vanity Fair magazine, July 1984. So cool. Our oldest one that we've ever done, by far. Yeah, it's kind of neat to, like, jump back. We were just like going into Drew's young life talking about Steven Spielberg. So we're just kind of like staying in this like. I know I was definitely seeing some like crossover between last episode in this episode. It's. Kind of, Yeah. Yeah. OK, so we've got some things at the top. Before we get into the topic, one of the first things we wanted to talk about was the Lena Dunham interview from the Drew Barrymore Show.

2:17 So good. It was so good. You know, it's very unusual for me to watch ahead of like whatever airs on Paramount, but there was like a link that their shows Instagram did to the extended YouTube version. And I happened to have like random downtime where I was able to watch it and I'm so glad I watched it. That me too cool, everyone needs to watch it that way. I haven't watched the like edited version on paramount but why even? Bother Yeah, no need. Yeah. I don't know how I, I think I noticed that there was a clip on like Instagram that like wasn't in the show and I was like.

2:49 OK. Where's the rest? And then I went to YouTube specifically looking for it. And then I watched a couple other extended ones that were older because I was like, oh, I don't know if I ever watched this. Anyways, it was so cool. They did something really different where they didn't have an audience for this one, which I thought is so interesting. That was the. The third time this season, and I do wonder, like if it's a scheduling thing. I was thinking. It is, but man, there were just so many very interesting moments in this one.

3:16 And like I pulled four small little clips for Instagram and how do you do pod that? I thought like really nicely correlated to things that we talk about on the podcast and on the Patreon. Like there was like a thing about Jade Drew's mom that like she didn't even name her, but I was like, oh, we clocked that and little girl lost like pressure on her looking a certain way. Anyway, very cool. I mean, she's like, I don't know, like what your feelings are on Lena Dunham. She's like very disliked on the Internet.

3:52 Very. But I always think about our Jolena. Yeah, I don't know if you remember this, but like Jolena used to do massages and she just happened to do it in LA and had a lot of celebrity clients. And she always said Lena was the number one best, nicest person she ever worked on. So I always like take everybody's hate with a little grain of salt cuz I'm like Jolena loved her. I feel like Lena Dunham. I really like her. I like her vibe. The way she like comes off as very, I don't know, like easygoing.

4:26 I don't know. She seems really cool, but I kind of get why people are odd about her. I don't know. Well, she came off great in this interview, so I'm like, maybe chilling is on to something. Yeah, it was really, really cool. Yeah. You want to talk about this next new old thing? Speaking of really, really cool, Oh my God. So our wonderful friend Renata at Drew Barrymore Brazil just discovered on YouTube. It was only uploaded like a couple days ago, a 1979 GM auto Parts commercial starring a tiny little Drew looking so cute.

5:03 She's reminding me a lot of my of my toddler here in this. I wonder if I should play like the little part where she talks at the end. Let me see. Because it's like hard to understand her because she's so little too. And now General Motors dealers are offering both infant and child love seats. Love seats were developed by GM safety engineers. They're strong and comfortable, right? Honey, keep that great GMP and genuine. GM parts. My seats for big girls it is. Kind of amazing to see a car seat commercial from 1979 that's very out of the time.

It's like we've discovered a few new quote UN quote commercials she did pre ET. I'm I counted we're up to 8 now. And it's really neat to like have another one because I always remember in Biorhythm the MTV special from 98.1 of the things that it would say on the screen was she like auditions for a shit load of commercials and books every single one. But back then we only knew about like 3, right?

Yeah, Yeah. That's I'm surprised that hasn't come up. I know same. I double. Checked it, she loves memes. OK. Leonard Maltin and I was like, melt.

9:28 So if you guys don't know the weirdest story about him, should we like say this right here? Yeah, sure. I'll, I can, I can kind of say it. Maybe you'll remember parts of it better. But OK. So we were looking at a photo on eBay of John Barrymore and we were planning on buying it for Drew for her birthday and we got outbid. I think I was buying it. And so I was able to message the person who bought it. Yeah, you used to be able to see who bought him on eBay. That's how long ago this was. Yes. And I said to them, I didn't know it.

9:59 Well anyway, I didn't know who it was. I messaged them and said I really wanted to give this as a gift to Drew Barrymore. You know, this is of her family and we love doing well, whatever. And like right away this person like agrees to mail the thing to us. Didn't even make you pay right? I don't think so. I don't think so either. I think he just. Yeah. And then I don't know when I figured it out, but it was Leonard Maltin, guys. He was collecting this John Barrymore thing. And I was like, hey. I love that he's on our thank you page on the Druseum.

10:29 God, that's such an amazing weird thing to happen. So was me saying milk because I couldn't remember. Yeah, name. Yeah. So we just started. Calling him Milk. Milk. Anyway, little weird segue. We have those guys. We have weird. We do. Counters like this. We do. And last of all, for now, Drew loves samosas. I'm hungry. Good list. It is a good list. OK, so should we get into the druism of the week? You know those cool little isms that we do? OK, I love this one because it's funny, but also because I manifested it because I think, like, the day before this, I had texted you and I was like, I have a feeling that when Drew's done with her show, she's going to try Broadway.

11:20 Like, I just have this feeling and you're like, I can't see that. And then all of a sudden she's talking about it. It was with Laurie Metcalf, right? I don't know, I haven't seen that episode. Oh, OK. Yeah, it was. So anyway, she's talking about how she was, she is just terrified to do theater. And I was like, well, yeah, exactly. She loves doing stuff that scares her. But the quote was my family does a rotisserie turn in the grave every time because I am so scared of theater because she comes from this theatrical acting family.

11:54 On the stage. Yes, the Barrymore Theater. Yes. And they are probably all just going come on girl, let's go. I love that you like, like you said, you kind of manifested it. I mean, what I do, I'm very curious if that will be something that we'll see Drew doing. Oh my God, how cool would it be to see her performing? Yeah, we just have to go. Oh my God, stopping us. That would be so cool. Yeah. OK, Drew, we're ready for you to do theater.

12:24 Let's talk about what's new with Drew here. We go with the news, everybody. This girl, she just is constantly making us update our tattoos episode so it looks like she has a new one. This is like at airtime, right? Not airtime at the time of recording. We can't 100% verify, but it seems this way. So she has the word grace written in cursive on her left arm right next to the word breathe. And the tattoo artist Sarah Corey, who had done Drews 222 tattoo last summer. She came on to the show to tattoo Zayn Malik.

13:03 It was filmed way back on March 30th, but it's going to air the day after we record this. So OK, you know, you guys are probably going to be like, yeah, duh, it's true. But so Zane had said in an interview that he got Drew's name tattooed on him. He's like, got tons of tattoos. And she in turn got the meaning of his name, which is Grace. And fun fact, my name Anne also means Grace. I love that. So she got my name on her. That's really cool. My name means the one who comes from the Ash Tree Meadow.

13:36 Not really as lovely, but yeah. So we spotted this on the show. Like I caught I it caught my eye during actually it was during the Chris Fleming interview, but I thought it was one of her just like riding on her arms like she does. But yeah, she's like pointed to it twice without like calling it out. But she said like Grace, and you know she does with her time tattoo she was points to. Yeah. So yeah, I think we're at tattoo 15. This is wild. Cool, she just keeps getting little mini ones. On her arms, every time.

14:09 But that's that's so cool. I mean, I love that. Like it's about spotting it and then you noticing her pointing to it. Like you're like, oh, it's exactly. It's a fun little process and she's. Totally telling you without telling, without actually. Telling you she's like winking at the camera. Ashley and Anne, I bet she caught this. Just kidding. Hey guys, just a quick editor's note to let you know that we have confirmed that the tattoo of the word grace is real. Drew got it on the show. Like we said with Zayn Malik though, the tattoo artist was not Sarah for Drew.

Correct. You have to put that in the episode phase like well. You like I don't know what my. Is this my? Is it my score on wiki?

I guess we always are when we're doing these, but right now we're going back a little bit further.

18:00 Further than we ever have before for a magazine, which is really interesting. You know, I think, I don't know if it feels like overall there's less interest in Drew's life as a child then obviously like the 90s or something, but I find it really interesting because I think it's so telling of how she's been formed to be the person she is. There's a lot in this article that I was like. Yeah, there's some heavy like, like wording that we can totally extract. So yeah, but there's some fun stuff too.

18:32 Yes. OK, so the article was written by Daphne Davis. Photos were by George Harrell. And I'll let you take the details about this because I think this is really cool. Oh, this is one of the coolest parts about this whole feature. So George Harrell was a very famous photographer who majorly contributed to all those glamour images of Hollywood's golden age during the 30s and 40s. So when you think of like Hollywood glamour, you're probably imagining his photo. Yes, Like he did a lot of Jean Harlow, which I, you know, I love her.

19:04 But the really neat part is that he notably shot the Barrymores, so Lionel, Ethel, and of course Drew's grandfather John. The article even opens with a photo of him and Greta Garbo from Grand Hotel that George Harrell shot. So I. Wonder how many times like Drew got to work with? Someone. That's exactly what I was going to say. Right, because like, we know that people would tell her stories about. Her. Family. But I don't, I can't think of another time we know of them. Like actually, maybe there's another.

19:36 Photographer, I don't know, the only time I can kind of remember, I believe there was somebody who worked on the set of Bogey, maybe a producer, maybe the director, I don't remember who had also worked with one of her family members. But like, you know, we're talking like 30-40 years in between, so. Long career. Yeah. How? How often is that going to happen? So. Cool. We'll definitely include some of these beautiful photos in the gallery of Drew's family that he took and then like to realize he took this huge family portrait.

20:09 Yeah. I was like what? This is amazing. That's so cool because I've definitely seen that before. I feel like we talked about that chair that Ethel's being on looking kind of like the one that Drew's odd in riding cars with boys at the wedding. I don't remember talking about that, but as soon as you say that chair looks like I knew where you were, we're going. It's the chair. Oh, we got so cool. OK, so a couple more details, just like kind of credits. We've got hair and makeup by Alfonso no, who notably did Charlie's Angels, Jaclyn Smith hair and makeup on a few projects.

21:19 I was not aware of this until I was doing the research. So it had been out of print since the Great Depression and then was only just revived for the March 1983 issue. So it's only been back for a year and a couple of months at this point. That's wild because I feel like it's one of those. Maybe I'm thinking of like Harper's Bazaar, but I can like picture. Think I'm doing the same issues. You know. Yeah, well, there were. It stopped for a while and it it was like folded into vogue at that time. Interesting.

21:48 So I like that. Yeah, and I thought this was cool. I found like a little news clipping for also from 84 that was calling it the new sassy celebrity oriented style of Vanity Fair. And it said it was basically like an upscale, sophisticated version of People magazine now. So it's like, wow, that's not where it was before. And I feel like it is still kind of that, you know, you think of like the Hollywood issues and all those. So just kind of a neat little history lesson on vanity. Fair, I like it.

22:18 It's kind of fun to have those little like tidbits that are unrelated like related. You know, related enough, yes. OK, before we get into the photos, I just realized also, is this the first feature we've done where she's not on the cover of the magazine? No, no. Oh, we did Vogue 93 and and that might be it though. OK. It's unusual. Yes. So this one, she is not on the cover. I don't remember what the cover is. It's like a model and it's very because it's a July issue. She's like in red, white and blue and she's doing like a.

22:49 Weird post. I can picture it now. Suddenly I got I got it in my head when you said 4th of July. I'm such a good model that's. Exactly. That's how I knew. So these pictures are really kind of unique. Like in in two of them especially, she's like dressed like way older than her age, but in like A and she looks so serious too, so serious. Yeah, absolutely. And the most classic one, of course, is the first one of her in, like, this pink long flowing dress. And she's got this feathered headdress on. And, you know, I think it is supposed to evoke this, like, George Harrell glamour photography totally vibe, but she's very serious in it.

23:30 Yeah. It's not like the. I don't know. I'm almost like, is she OK? Like, was she into this? It's hard to tell. Yeah, I think it was probably direction. Yeah. You know, so there's a quote from Drew from Allure magazine in 2013, she said that's a lot of look, but it was for Vanity Fair. So perfect. I mean, it's just sort of fabulous. Unfortunately, nowadays I feel like lots of girls get dressed up in that way and it gets out that weird pageantry thing. Which like it's like borderline there with this.

24:02 I have so many things to say about just like the way the press was about child actresses. I mean, we can all go on and on in a little bit, but absolutely, it's a really cool photo. It's very, I feel like pretty iconic, I would say from her childhood. It's neat. And it's such like you take such a pivot when you flip the page and you get one of her where she does look like a little girl and she's smiling and has like a little pink hat on. And that one, she feels her age, feels like a nine year old there.

24:30 Yeah. And then like followed by another sort of serious of Drew wearing this like seeked wind gold and black dress, looking in a mirror and serious again. But like there also like her body suddenly looks like a teenager or something. Yeah, it's like got this weird, like femme fatale, like noir vibes. Yeah. I mean, it's definitely a little, it's a little like right there on the line of like, is this cute or is this weird? I think it's really cool. I mean, I, I don't remember when I got this in my collecting, but it feels like one of those like it's common enough to not be like that scarce, but like it's also a really cool unique thing.

25:09 Like, I don't know. Curious how many people listening are not familiar with this and it might be like a new thing for them to see. So that'll be cool. Yeah. Always, always, always. Did I find it or were we together? I think. You found it first. Yeah, so I went to a shop in Burbank, CA called It's a Wrap and they sell clothes that were used on like productions.

25:42 I think it's usually like, you know, like usually TV, Yeah, yeah. I was trying to think of like whatever, like what's the like daytime TV anyway? Soap operas soap. Operas like I feel it's like a lot of soap opera clothes. Anyway, on the wall they have a framed dress. It's this dress, weirdly, with a picture of the magazine next to it. I tried. Yeah, we've like asked them about it. Yeah, I've reached out. I've like gotten like sort of vague responses like, well, why do you want it? Or like something weird like that.

26:11 And like, I'll reply and not hear back. This is a good reminder to maybe try again because like, I'm wondering what they would even want to sell it for. It's like way high up on the wall. It's hard to see like the only picture we have of it is kind of shitty. Do we know it's still there? I was there. It was soon after Elle was born, so within the last three years, and it was still there, OK, But I was like with a big group of people and we're kind of rushing through, so I didn't like have the time.

26:36 Stop and I. Should have like. Looking back I'm like. Fuck it, I should have just. Grabbed somebody and been like, can I buy that? How much? Let's go? But I was like dealing with a baby. And I know you've had it up for 20 years. I know, right? Anyway, just a cool little tidbit about that. So random. So random. There are 4 outtakes from this that we've seen and they are all printed in this magazine called Revista from January 1986, which is weird. It's like so much time later. Is it like a foreign magazine?

27:08 Yeah, I don't know. I don't want to get it wrong and say it what country it's from. I almost want to say Spain, but I have a copy of it which is cool. So there are 4 pictures, the one that's like on the balcony. So it looks like this whole shoot was just done in a hotel room to me. Like, the one in the mirror also looks like a hotel. Totally. Yeah. But yeah, there's one of her, like, on the balcony. And, like, she's still wearing that feathered headdress. And she has, like, a little bathing suit and, like, a glamorous mirror.

27:36 And again, it's like, it's so cute. But it's also like, is this weird? I don't know. That 1 is really funny. That outtake on the balcony? Yeah, Like it? Yeah, it seems. I don't know, Goofy. It does. In my research, I discovered that USC in there, like archives, has a contact sheet of negatives from this. Yeah. So I reached out to them. I emailed to see if we could like get a scan because you have to like make an appointment to view this collection. And the last time I tried this, it was it worked out great, but this time haven't heard anything back.

28:13 So that would be incredible to see. I I think you probably will. If not, maybe I can get like maybe I have someone through my connections that knows AUSC. That's what I was going to say. I'm like, I should have just left it to you because you probably would have phrased it like. No, no, no, I'm sure. Whatever. I'm sure. Whatever you requested, I hope that they can share it. Oh, that's so cool. Yeah. So we're trying, yeah. But yeah, the pictures are really unique, guys. You have to check them out.

I mean, working with someone from that era of her family, it's just very, very special. That they like talked about her family. Yeah, You know, when we play memory bank with Drew, we'll bring up these photos, the outtakes she hasn't seen probably ever. I will say, what do you remember about working with George Harrell? There we go. Well, write it down. OK, so I'm ready to get into this article.

So it starts out calling Drew the last of the Barrymores, and this is what it says. That's actually kind of scary creepy. At the last. I don't know. So then it says she's uncannily cute, she's spookily smart, and now she's a flaming star. Drew Barrymore, John's granddaughter, gets the full Hollywood treatment from photographer George Harrell and an ice cream soda from reporter Daphne Davis.

I wasn't able to, like, verify this. Yeah, but I love this quote. It sounds like something he'd say. If you sit in front of the camera long enough, it will show you not only what you had for breakfast, but who your ancestors were. So I hope that's. True, I like that quote for this. Yeah, the very more profile. When are we going to get that on the sound bar?

When Drew came on screen and I needed to use ET, the Barrymore tradition was reborn. It's lovely. It's a lovely thing to say. Her father had kind of killed it. And then there's a little brief recap. Of course there had to be with them going on and on about the Barrymore is there's a recap of John, Ethel and Lionel and their theatrical family. Turning in the rotisserie, turn in the grave.

It says 9 year old Drew their photogenically dazzling descendant is currently being touted as Hollywood's first child actress possessed of instinctual. Superstar quality. So yeah, this is I was like, this article really is laying it on thick with like this expectations of her to be this tremendous talent and superstar and like, yeah, it's kind of wild. Like I'm, I just look at this, I'm like, how did she not feel incredible pressure? Totally.

I was like, wait, there was like some pushback after this happened. So Jade apparently had to be like, no, no, no, Vanity Fair put in that example of Jodie Foster, and this is going to jeopardize the close friendship that we have with the Fosters. And there was a phone call made and it was all strained out and everyone's friends again, just like, Oh my God. Like I've never heard of Drew being friends with Jodie Foster's mom.

So then there are these, like I said, these really weird and pretty mean comparisons to Brooke Shields. I'm not going to read them because I was like, this is so, like, disrespectful to Brooke Shields.

It's like, OK, can't argue with that, Barrymore Brands. Totally Speaking of very more brands. Nobody love this. It says that at the time, there were plans to license a fragrance called Drew, along with the line of dresses and maybe a doll. Like, Can you imagine? That would be so cool. All of those things would be so cool to see so.

It's already weird enough that she, like, had her face on all this, like ET memorabilia that like, I'm sure she made no money off of. Yeah, it might have been with JoJo Siwa, but it's strange. Like this could have definitely happened and the collector in me is like, wow, think about how cool that would have been to have those pieces.

Or is that true? I mean, I love to think that it's true. I mean, you know, I like that idea. The 80s like predates the Internet. A lot of the stuff that could have been said back then maybe didn't get transcribed somewhere.

Weird way she was treated as a child because I was like God when I googled him I'm like he looks so familiar. Is he this guy? Is he so I look it up. He is. So we had talked about this an episode a long time ago, but there is this weird like Screen Actors Guild anniversary special in the same year as this 84.

39:31 And she does this like song and dance with this guy. And of course it's one of these examples again with an old dude kissing her face and being weird with her face. And I just hate it. Even this picture here, he's kissing her hand. Like why? Like maybe they knew each other because of this dance class connection, but I just, I just don't like it. I don't like it gives you the the. Creeps, yeah. Drew was wearing a black leotard and a red mini skirt and dances to footloose at her dance. Class so 80s so 80s.

And then they followed that up with a snack and some soda at the Hard Rock Cafe. Again, the 80s continue. What an afternoon I. Know it's so fun so this is kind of wild. This is the articles first and only direct quote from Drew Yeah, which I was like what like I finished the article and then I was like wait, there are no other quotes directly from her which right it's very weird but a little bit OK so the quote is first let me tell you that I will always act in movies and be the best actress that I can and then it says that she's speaking in like an imitation of her mother's style of manager speak so very interesting and then she goes on and says when I grow up I'm going to get 2° one each in producing and directing and I also want to be known as a dancer.

41:04 I'm writing a screenplay called Kim. It's a serious comedy about a little girl and her mother. I can't tell you what it's about that's a secret, but I'm going to play the mother full of ideas. So I'm going to take this because I'm like very familiar with this. So Jaden also mentions that Drew was scheduled to shoot Alice in Wonderland in England in the fall.

It's you'll see it on Instagram a lot in clips because it's so wacky, creepy, weird. And like, I those things didn't bother me as a child for some reason. Yeah. But it's like very much a part of my childhood. And I've talked about it before on here because I'm always like, oh, if Drew had done it, like, my interest in her would have come about so much earlier, you know?

But the Irwin Allen, the producer, he was quoted a couple times back then as saying that he had, you know, Drew was the first part, first choice for the part, but she had turned into a young lady and was just really too big. It's just like, and he also said, like it was important to me that Alice be played by a youngster not more than 8 or 9. And of course, Drew was like barely 10.

And it's like, this is probably one of those examples where she got like fired from a job because of it.

Unconsciously, she slips the right tone of smug 1980s camp humor into the punchline, as though she were performing at a comedy club on Saturday Night Live or in the movie that plays uncontrollably 24 hours a day in her head. That just made me think of that, like, was it Cafe Largo where she comes and does like this?

And then it's like, you know, almost immediately her career starts kind of downsliding. And oh true, you are so resilient and amazing.
