124 – 50 First Dates (2004): Drew Barrymore & Adam Sandler's Unforgettable Rom-Com - How Do You Drew

Now let's get into it. All right, 51st Dates is directed by Peter Segal, who Drew absolutely loves, and it's really sweet to see that little relationship. And it was written by George Wing, so he's the official credited writer. He wrote the original screenplay, which we will talk about. There are a lot of uncredited rewrites by several other people. Drew specifically mentions that Alan Covert, Tim Hurley, and Adam Sandler of course work diligently every day of to enhance the script and make the scenes funnier.

So Adam and his normal crew all had their hands in this one, just like The Wedding Singer and I'm sure all of his other films. Yeah, and we'll get into some of those changes from the original script while we're going through the movie, so that'll be fun too. The movie was produced by Jack Jaraputo, Steve Golan and Nancy Javonin. We were both surprised to find out that Drew and Adam themselves are not credit as producers, but of course their companies are. So we have Flower Films and Happy Madison like at the top, but it's weird so.

Confused by that? It seems very weird to me. Well let's have a produce so credit on this. Like what? Well. What about like like on Charlie's Angels is she listed herself as a OK? Interesting. I don't know. I wonder what the the reason was. Maybe they like we're a little bit more hands off in some ways. Who knows? Seem like it, but who knows? We don't. We don't know about the showbiz. Right. And the movie, as we said at the top, this is the anniversary of the film right around now. So it was released on February 13th of 2004.

So happy 22nd anniversary to 51st. Dates crazy and I love that neither of us were like, oh it's a cool anniversary. Like your boyfriend was the one who pointed out 22. Like, he's like, what's Drew's favorite number? I was like, oh, like I felt really stupid for a second because as I said it out loud, I was like, maybe thought it, but like we weren't thinking about that. But anyway, 22 for Drew's birthday on 2/22. Works out so well. Works out so well. We love when the stuff happens accidentally on purpose.

Yeah, numbered nerds. OK, here is our description. This time we're going to do it from Prime, Amazon Prime rather than IMDb, because I thought this one was better. So here we go. A Hawaiian island Playboy has to use his imagination to win over the girl of his dreams when he discovers she has no short term memory. Every night he has erased from her memory so he has to make her fall in love with him all over again the next day. Perfect. Well said. Yeah, that pretty much. That's what I need. Yeah. OK, so now let's get into the making of.

So we always have these like heavy, sort of. Here's what we learned about what happened before the movie even came out. Yeah, so much yes. Okay, so originally the title of the film was 51st Kisses, and it was more of like a small sad melodrama that mostly took place in the cafe. So already like many different feelings. The screenwriter also said it was a small, personal little movie that was changed. I wonder how they felt about that. Do we know anything about? I was reading the article where that quote came from and it it sounded more like he was just surprised that it became this huge big budget thing.

I don't know that he was like upset about it, but he was just like, wow, I wasn't expecting this. That's interesting. Nancy had found the script. So Nancy Duvone, we mentioned her earlier, Drew's major partner, if you guys don't know that she found the script while Drew was filming, writing cars with. And Drew really only wanted to focus on writing cars with boys at that moment, which makes sense. She was, like, so serious about what was going on, deeply into it. Yeah. And Nancy insisted that she read it so she felt.

Strongly about that I could. Totally. Picture that. Yeah, me too. So Drew, of course, knew once she read it, she had to be involved in some way with this movie. And she didn't know whether she was going to have time to do that as an actress or if we would just be producing. But she just loved the message of the script, which was to her, how do you Make Love stay? And she told People magazine to reinvent love every day is what people should be doing for each other. And she also told Glamour, I believe in the premise of the film, which is that you can fall in love with someone every day.

And it is also a comedy. And I love to laugh. And I think that love and laughter go hand in hand. So she's just like, yes, this is I Even if it was, like, so wildly different at the time. Yeah. That script, like the core message of it, spoke to her big. Time, yes, big time. Which is she? She's like, is consistent, like laughter, love, like we know those are things that Drew is like. Those are the things that have to go hand in hand. If somebody can't make me laugh, I can't. And you not love them?

Yeah. Exactly. So anyway, so they had considered like casting another actress since Drew was so busy, which is so interesting to think of crazy. So they staged a table read with Drew reading this part of Lucy and she totally fell in love with it. She said it felt small, deep and very emotional. So I like how like what she was getting out of, I'm guessing the original version of the script they were reading. So like it was called like small personal. Like small always comes up, little like, you know in this one, little like the the director refers to the original script.

Being in the cafe is like very claustrophobic. Like to me, I'm almost imagining it was like a play. Yeah. Like you could, I mean, maybe that's how the adaptation that we'll talk about much later and maybe more like I don't know, but it's interesting they keep using small when like because Hawaii is so expansive. Yes. I don't know, there's something opposite. Yeah. Of like a little cafe, yeah. So Flower Films kept losing the chance to get to the rights to this movie for like, years, like Drew wanted it.

And then she said in Wildflower a few weeks later, Nancy called her and said they're giving the script to someone else, another company, and they won't say who. And Drew said, I was sick. There was something about this film that had lit a fire in me that not only wouldn't extinguish, it burned brighter by the week. I followed it like a hawk. So she's just like, who has this movie and how do I get involved? She felt strongly. Yeah. After changing many hands, as we've been kind of inferring, they found out that had finally landed at Happy Madison, which is Adam Sandler's production pump company that I mentioned earlier.

How convenient. And they like right away they're like, we need to get in there. And so November 2001, Variety announced that Adam was eyeing it and could potentially Co star with Julia Roberts, which like, no, that would be so I know. We're. Both like no. No. So in 2002, while filming Charlie's Angels Full Throttle on the Sony lot, Drew got out her typewriter and wrote a letter to Adam. I love that so much of. Course. So she said. I started typing and it was like conducting a Symphony. The tears in me started to swell as I wrote about my history with this script.

How long I had loved it, why I had loved it, how I truly felt once again in my bones that I was supposed to have something to do with it. She always has those like deep instinctual feelings about the projects. She talks about that like with Adam specifically, like she felt like they had to be a duo and like. It doesn't make sense, but I promise that this is right. She's always. Saying like, Oh yeah, I met him with purple hair in my leopard coat and I was we were so different. We couldn't be more different, but I knew.

Drew also said she felt the film was worthy of their re teaming and wrote this is it, this is the one. I know it.

Great instincts again. Yeah. So she had this letter delivered to his office, but that was also on the Sony lot. So it was just like, probably a little bike rider right over and picturing that. Yeah. And then Adam just walked over to her trailer and he said, of course, but we're going to turn it into a comedy. And Drew said that's fine as long as it doesn't lose its romance, which is kind of like, we'll see. That's sort of how Happy Madison Flower films like, collaborated on this. Like, you guys do the comedy, we're going to do the romance.

Let's make sure they're both there. Yeah. Yeah. And then in October of 2002, I love that we have all these dates. Your research is there. Thank you. Thank you. In October of 2002, it was already rumoured that Drew would join Adam in the film. So let's see, what was that timeline like? She says while they're filming. Yeah. Within like months, yeah. Instantly. They each knew what the guys and girls wanted, so you kind of said this like the romance, the comedy, and they decided that they wanted to produce it together as Flower Films and Happy Madison as a duo.

Nancy considered their companies sorority and the fraternity, which that makes sense too. They would compare script notes after each draft. So like, the production companies really were working together, like at every step. During editing, Nancy says that director Pete Segal was really good about giving both teams what they wanted. That's also really cool. And they go through that in the commentary a lot to like, this was almost gone. But then they fought for it. And like, we don't, we would thought this was really funny.

Like, it's neat. Andrew said it was like the smoothest editing process she's ever seen as a producer. And then he agreed that it was just like everything was so on point. Everyone knew what they were they were doing and what they wanted. Like it was amazing. So cool. And then like it was a true collaboration between the two companies. That's so cool. So cool. OK, so let's talk a little bit about some of the main cast members. Of course, Adam Sandler is Henry Roth and Drew calls him her cinematic soulmate.

This is their second of three films together, the first being The Wedding Singer and the second being Blended. And we did have a great episode about The Wedding Singer if you guys want to hear that. It's from episode 71 and we released that two years ago for Valentine's Day 2024. So crazy. It took us like 2 entire years to get to this one, but well. I think we were like to save it. Like felt like, yes, we were precious about this, just like we were about Charlie's Angels, but like it totally it.

Was time. Yeah. And we also have an episode all about Drew and Adam's friendship relationship, and that's episode 47, and it's one of our most popular episodes, so that's pretty cool. I always wonder if it's because people think he like guessed it on the episode. I always think that if people are, like, searching Adam Sandler, they see like this whatever podcast with his name. Like what? Yeah. Whoops. Oh well. So Drew said it's exciting to make a love story with someone you truly think is the greatest person in the world.

It just comes naturally to me every day to act like I'm in love with him.

OK and then of course we have Drew as Lucy Whitmore, she says about the role. I could not have enjoyed being her more, which she loved Julia so much too and The Wedding Singer so I feel like her love. I've really idolized Julia, I feel like. Yeah. Do you think it's a coincidence? I've always wondered this, that the names Julia and Lucy are both like in major Beatles songs like. I feel like it probably has to be a coincidence unless they change the names in the. I know I like. I would love to know if they were originally different names because it's such a cool, such a cool cosmic thing, so.

Also I I feel like there it's probably twofold, like maybe it's a coincidence, but also like Drew might have been attracted to the roles for their names. Maybe, maybe maybe it was like a sign to her right I need to do. This and why she felt so strongly. Yeah, it's just like something cosmic about these names. OK, Rob Schneider as Ola, I feel like I have a lot to say about him. So Drew and Nancy were concerned at first when he was kind of describing to them what he wanted to do with the character.

Like he's talked about the wig and the prosthetic eye. But they ended up being so happy with the resulting quote. Endearing and wonderful character. And that's kind of how I feel Like I don't want to like it. I wonder if there's like a cultural appropriation thing we should be upset with. I think he's had some, like, really bad political views in the last few years. No, but you end up loving the character. Like, in spite of all of it. Because he's, like, a sweet wing man to, like, Henry's character.

His kids are funny. Like, there is something. Yeah. It is like, you kind of want to, like, think he's annoying or weird or like, is this OK? Like a little ick. And then it's not. I have to say one more thing about the prosthetic eye. So I noticed that K&B Studios was listed as the. What makeup? No way, I totally missed that. And which is what they did scream, right? So it does. I've done like lots of great stuff, but I noticed that and I was like, what would be prosthetic? Maybe also Ula's scar from like his little like shark bite.

I just realized, well I guess her thing is probably CG her like makeup for her hospital picture. Maybe not, I don't know. Yeah, maybe. Interesting. Wow, that's so cool. But yeah, it can be. I was like, whoa. So the first thing I thought of was the eye on Rob's. Yeah. And then we have Sean Astin as Doug Whitmore. I low key love Sean. That like, feels correct. I'm like, yes, of course I loved. The Goonies growing up, but Drew has also known him since the Goonie days. So cool and I love this fact. So he sent a tape of himself in character.

Some of it's on like the DVD featurettes, but it's really funny because he's like, I think he's like playing maybe 2 characters or like couple versions of this character. Doug, it's really funny and I think he does an amazing job as his character. So he came up with the lisp and worked out like crazy to make his body like Botter Bodybuilder. Although this is like one of many times there's CG in the movie. He has like the little chest. Yeah, but I need to describe. I had that like chest. Dancing, yeah.

I was really surprised to hear that that was CGI. But like, once I knew I would, I could kind of tell, but I always believed in it. Before I just thought like, oh, that's one of the things he learned to do because that would be freaking hilarious. But it's also hilarious. You would never think that was CGI. I mean, there are so many things there like I forget they said in the commentary going on a side to side thing about like how many? I forgot how many it was. It was a lot. A lot of like tiny ones you would never even.

Right, like waterless. Which are the best ones you know to me? Yeah, exactly. Like you don't even know. Let it be subtle. That's like a David Fincher, all his CGI. When you know about it, you're like blown away cuz you never would have noticed it. There's like good YouTube videos about that I'll send you. OK Finally, just to round out the main cast, we have Blake Clark as Marlin Whitmore, Lucy's dad. Or is it? And like when he says Marlin, everyone just said like, the best things to say about him.

And Drew specifically said that he makes the tone of the film come alive in the most profound ways and brings a primal parental thing. And apparently she always called him Dad on set, which I'm like, of course. Of course. And also, like when she described it that way and I was watching the movie, I was like, totally. Yeah, he just like. Loves her so much, wants to protect her. That's his entire plan. And he is funny because like, he's like a stand up comedian, but he's funny in like a very subtle way in this movie, like Merlin.

His his like timing is comedic, but then his like character is like, well, that's the thing about this movie. I think it like toes that line of like serious and then comedy, like each person pretty much, especially the main character is especially Drew have to like show this range. That's kind of insane. Yeah, it's definitely balancing like 2 really different tones, but it succeeds in my opinion. Yep, and we're going to shout out a lot of the other cast throughout this talk. We've touched the major ones.

There are lots of, like, great little people in this movie. Yeah, it's quite a good cast. Yeah, it's it's really, I mean, if you haven't seen it, you're listening to this. What? But also, yeah, this has like, I guess like a lot of Adam Sandler movies, there's like people who have one great line, and some of these are the Adam people. There's always like, weird little random quirky characters. Always, yes. And, like, lots of ad libbing, weirdly, Yeah. OK, so let's get into Drew's beautiful luck in this movie.

Oh. So Drew has long blonde extensions, which were Indian hair extensions dyed blonde and they were done by Susan Lippmann. I know that you love this hair. Of course, the second that she showed up with this hair in March 2003 and it was printed in a tabloid, I literally took it to my hairdresser. I was like, I want my hair this blonde because my hair was a bit darker than that. And I mean, it's still to this day, it's exactly how my hair is right now. Yeah, pretty much, which is why that costume for you, which we'll talk about later, was.

So easy. So more about Drew's beautiful look. Her hair and makeup on the film were done by Lana VG and Robin Frederick's respectively. This was their very first of many future times working on Drew. They were frequently collaborators of Cameron Diaz, including on Charlie's Angels Full Throttle. So makes sense how Drew got to know them. Yep, both of them became some of her best friends. Like truly. So it's really neat that this is like. Where it started, Yeah, I didn't realize that. So seeing that in the notes I was like.

Oh, that's so. Cool. I had like, I think I, I think I remembered that they had worked with Cameron, but I didn't realize this was their first with Drew. It's pretty cool. That's fun. Robin said that Henry is attracted to Drew's natural beauty, so she made Drew look sun kissed with tinted moisturizer and sheer blush. And for those of you out there who are beauty junkies, she used Stila and Giorgio Armani makeup products for Drew's look. So there's a little info for you. It is. Very simple look, but there are moments when like there are little choices like we'll talk about like eyeliner, eyeliner.

But like usually, yeah, it's just sun kissed simple. Like her lips I don't think are ever like a dark color in this. Now they're always like a simple like light pink. Lucy's like a casual girl, you know, She just like, quickly gets ready and goes to her breakfast. I mean every day. I was also thinking like Julia is supposed to be like simple like that. Like she's doesn't. I guess there are times when Julia has lipstick though. She does, But Mona Mae specifically told us, if you guys don't know, we do have an episode with costume designer Mona Mae that she wanted just be like, let's throw on a dress and, like, keep it simple, yeah.

Right. And Drew loved that, and I feel that way for this. Obviously it's very different costume wise. So the assistant costume designers for Drew were Claire and Nina Hallworth, who are otherwise known as the Style team. Nina and Claire who worked for a Drew on some of her photo shoots and gave us a quote for the 2001 movie Line episode. No idea. Crazy. Like when I was reading the credits, I was like, Claire and Nina, wait a second, wait a second. We like talk to them. And that's so neat to find out.

Like they didn't even mention that when we were. Talking to them, Maybe they have. We do maybe maybe they forgot. I feel like these people who do just non-stop jobs, they just don't have it at the top of their minds. Like I don't blame them and if. We're like specifically asking about something they might be like they don't want to know about everything else. But yeah, who? Knows so, Drew, said. Her primary outfit by the end of the filming. She, like, hated it. She's. Like, why, Oh my God, why did I choose this outfit?

But she said it's what felt like something you'd wear just going out to breakfast on a Sunday. And actually, there was one point when I was looking at her, like, white cargo pants or whatever those pants are. Like they are like, not that cute. No, it's very simple and basic. Right. But I was like, she had to wear that every day. What pants? How many times do you think those pants got dirty? I. Mean they probably had like 15 copies of them at least. That's true. Consider here's her outfit for however many Yeah, they were filming this.

I do love when, like, suddenly she starts wearing a bunch of different looks. Yes, so many of them. As I was watching, I was like, oh, I had something. I tried to copy that. Oh, I tried to copy that look. I was really inspired by that one. There's certain dresses. I'm like, oh I still want that dress. This definitely took me back to the mid 2000s and like my personal journey. Yes, but like that outfit, the white, the white pants with the pink is obviously most of the movie. Yeah, the identifiable 1.

Yes, absolutely. OK, so filming started in March 2003 and went all the way through May. And it's crazy. Like it almost looks like if you look at kind of Drew's chronological, what she was up to, it's like she finished filming this and then immediately was off around the world to promote Full Throttle. It's just like, wow, I know. So during filming they were still using the title 51st Kisses, which I have to say, I really kind of miss it. I still like that name. 51st kisses. 51st dates. 51st kisses sound sweeter.

It sounds sweeter, yeah, which is why they changed it. We'll talk about that later. But it's kind of funny. Some of our behind the scenes photos, they came from Adam Sandler's website back then, like as they were filming. And they're literally titled FFK. Oh, how funny. That's cool. That's one reason I like that we keep like original titles. Yeah. Sometimes I do not change titles specifically for that reason. And other times I'm like, this needs to be more searchable. It's an ongoing process we're going through.

Our digital archive guys. So the movie, it was mostly filmed on Oahu, Hawaii. Of course, some scenes were filmed in California, including Malibu. And even randomly they shot a scene in San Francisco, which is so interesting. But the movie was originally, I mean, the script was originally set in Seattle, which again is part of like how that really drastic shift from the original tone to now like rainy little Cafe in in Seattle to this like expansive, beautiful Hawaii scenery. It's like so. Different.

When I started to try to picture it, I was like, oh, it'd be cool to see her like back in Seattle after like. I didn't think about that. So many years after Mad Love. Yeah. And I was like, well, that like right away. I'm like tonally so different. But also I'd like, want her to be like Casey. But I was like, oh, that would have been really interesting to. Yeah. It's like one of those weird like sliding doors moments. What what could have been. But so Adam and his team, they decided, let's move the locale to Hawaii like no brainer.

Adam said it was such a spectacularly beautiful place for a romantic comedy. Drew said that Hawaii kind of became this real world and this perfect romantic setting for you to get lost in the story and the fantasy. It really is like a character in the movie. Some of the films really have their like location as a character. And this is one of them, right? And Drew, I felt so privileged to be working in that setting. Apparently she also mentioned that they'd all traveled there together, quote, as a group after the wedding Singer, which was like an interesting bit of information to me.

So it's almost like they were planning the Hawaiian seeds. I don't know. It's kind of. Interesting and also like cool. Do we have pictures of that? There's like pictures of her like really horrible paparazzi pictures like 2 of them of her there in like January 99 and then but like the person taking the pictures missed Adam. I think I know the pictures you're talking. About like, is she wearing like, is she wearing like blue board shorts on them? Yes, yes.

This is a kind. Of a fun thing so Drew would basically have the director just roll film while she was trying different takes or line readings rather than having him cut. And they developed sort of like a shorthand with each other. They'd call it small, medium, large performances that so that like levity or drama was available at any point. Amazing crazy like imagine being in. Any room, and you have two very different reads. One's funny and one's serious, like, And you just have to make that choice.

That's a lot of work. Yeah, it feels like a lot. Of like work emotionally. Should we start doing that? Do you? Want me to do 5 different readings of every line that I say and then you get to choose which one you like? Yeah. That sounds like so fun.

But I, I don't know, I guess like when they say the. Editing process was easy, I guess because they were just like, all right, Select, we want this and to be big. Yeah, like, kind of random to imagine, but cool. In the commentary, he reveals that he met her when she was in elementary school and he was working at a news station, and they had done a story at her school. And I think she says, like, we've known each other and you're mentioning this for the first time. Like that's so crazy. He I wonder if he literally just like.

Remember, he says, he's just what it seems like. Yeah, yeah, because it was just random in the middle of the. Commentary, but that's so cool. Really neat like. What? According to Drew. Life was perfect while filming, she said. It was fun, wholesome, communal and a moment in her life that felt so safe she can't even begin to do it justice. And Cameron Diaz flew out there to visit while they filmed. And like, at the hotel room next to Drew's, they rented a ping pong table to go in the common area between their two rooms.

And they took surfing lessons together. And supposedly, Drew got up on her first wave. Drew, that's. Cool, wasn't on. Hollywood Squares, like the thing recently was like, Drew, let's just surf. I think it's at in Hawaii, yes. And I was like. Why are they reading my notes in the future like this is so creepy. Everything times with this. So weird. But I was like true right away. I was like, I feel like I knew. Not like that it was necessarily linked to 51st states, but I feel like I knew that she learned to surf.

So I was like true, true.

OK. Let's. Get into the movie, guys. Yay. So the way we. Do these is we basically are focusing on Drew. This is a Drew Barrymore podcast. We are not going to like go through every view of the movie. I mean, I like to try to give a little bit of context to what we're talking about, but if you haven't seen it, like, obviously tons of spoilers, but also we're not talking about every scene. Drew's in most of the movie. So we're talking about most of the movie, but it's more disjointed than that. There you go.

Yeah. So. For the opening montage, were introduced to Henry's bachelor marine veterinarian life. It's it's things go hand in hand, right? Exactly it works. It's. It's very silly. So Adam. So I'll just I guess I'll just like briefly describe, but there's a bunch of different women and then there's Kevin James and they're all telling the same story, sort of like using each whatever, finishing each other's sentences, telling the story of Adam being perfect to all these tourists. So Adam and the director's wives are they appear in the dentist scene.

So Adam's wife Jackie, who Drew loves Jackie. And then I mentioned Kevin James. He was just on The Drew Barrymore Show and revealed that this was his first time in a movie. Yeah, that's kind of. I mean, he became like a pretty good big movie actor. So I was like, I was like, wait, none of those were before this. And no, I know. Same. Pretty cool. So yeah. We kind of learned that Henry is this like big time Playboy player in Hawaii. He dates the Taurus, they leave, he doesn't like commitment. Works out great.

Okay so he wants to do this like big sailing trip to Alaska to study walruses and he's in his boat and it like wrecks or breaks down and so he has to kind of go to shore and he goes to this little cafe that he's never been to before. So then this is where we get to see our girl. It's interesting to me and like once I knew, I guess I could tell, but the cafe is a sound stage in Culver City. Like they couldn't film at the actual cafe for some reason. So all of those scenes indoors are a set. It's so weird.

And the commentary talked about much CGI was used for this. Like what's visible outside of the windows of the cafe is like all CGI. Well, he did say that. There's like birds, like real live birds, but that they came into. This like yeah, sounds just like. An actual like kind of big matte painting backdrop, right? But then they added like the reflections on the water and like boats. So weird, but you wouldn't think about. It no you really if it didn't. Have movement it would. Probably feel a little weird, but like there, there's a lot of like.

There was a lot of effort to like make the back feel real, which is cool. It worked. Yeah, Drew also said that she actually had a big zit on her face the day they're filming her first appearance, and she was incredibly self-conscious about it. That's so Drew to mention that. I know it's kind of funny. Like I couldn't find it again and who even knows the source or how long ago it was, but I do remember reading a rumor somewhere online that a lot of work went into like retouching her face in this movie.

Which like sounded like bullshit. To me, but that one thing, I was like, huh, I can't see a zit. Like maybe maybe it's true. Maybe it was just for that one scene or something. I don't know. But that's where all the CGI like. Energy went was to Drews 1 pimple. Yeah, there you go. You can't see. The cover of the book she's reading at the table in this very first scene, but I feel like we got to just talk about it now. So Lucy is always reading the book. Still Life with Woodpecker by Tom Robbins, and it was Drew's idea to have this be the book because it's about how to Make Love stay.

So she's like, perfect, she said. It. The book asks. That question and then goes on a wild ride, just like the film. Love is the one uniting, relatable thing in everyone's life. It's what we all want and struggle with and fight for. And I love the version of that we are telling here in paradise. I love those. Connections. I know it's really neat. She also said that like, not only is it her favorite book, but it's about how do you Make Love stay and she thought that was apropos on so many levels.

So it's so cool. I also, so I read this book, Oh my God, 20 years ago now, but the first time I read it was I was in Hawaii. So I don't know how it worked out that way. And then the book started and it's in Hawaii. So I was like oh this is an even cooler reason for her to have chosen this but. And I finally read it last. Year Like I had the paperback for a long time and I finally read it. It was an odd read. It's a very odd book. I don't remember much about it, but. I feel like I liked it. It's very surrealist.

OK, like. Really. Weirdly surrealist. Aren't there like symbols? On the Camel cigarette pack, that like mean things. That's like the thing I remember the most. There's somebody who's like, trapped. In an attic at some point. And like all they have in the room with them is a cigarette pack. And I think they like maybe make up a story about that. And then there's one point where like they are like living in a pyramid. There's like a hole on the. Pack Yeah, yeah, like it I. Don't like, I don't even remember exactly all of the steps of it, but it's like a super weird book, but it's really like interesting.

It took me a while to get through it though, because I was like, I don't know, I won't go into it too much, but I remember thinking like as I was reading through it, I'm like, I'm not really getting what I'm reading, but I think I just need to keep going. You know what? That is sometimes like it's I. Do yeah, I just. Finished a book like that and I'm like, I don't know what that whole ending was all about but OK. A couple more. Things I just want to say about this first, you know, appearance of our girl.

So she's making a little structure out of her waffles and this is the first of many will see her do. And I'm like, oh, this is such a like manic Pixie girl quirky little trait to be doing, but like Casey Roberts, I know. She does explain. Like in the comments, I think it is that it's like, oh, she's an artist, so of course she's always going to be creating something. But I'm like, it's a little hard to buy that she does this every day in a. Restaurant. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. But I love that. She's eating alone with a book and a crossword puzzle.

I had already noted that. That is such a drew thing to do. Yeah. And then I listen to the commentary and she points out, like, I love to go eat by myself with my book. I was like, Yep, I knew it.

So originally. They had filmed a fantasy scene of Henry walking over to meet her for the first time as they ended up feeling it was unnecessary and the director said it hurt to cut a scene that showed so much of their chemistry. He says something like clever pick up line and then she says like witty response. Oh, invitation to sit. Down. Yes, exactly. Back at the cafe for their meat. Cute. Yeah, cuz the first one I. Always forget Henry sees her but he doesn't talk to her and then he goes about and does his thing and then he decides to come back cuz he can't stop thinking about this pretty girl he saw I had forgotten that he.

Left and came back too, yeah. I love the guy who plays Nick. Yeah, like, he's like the cook at the cafe. His. The actor's name is Pomay Brown, and this was his first movie, which is cool, but I always love that he calls Henry peanut butter cups. Me too. He cracks. Me up. Me too. I really like it. Too simple, yeah? Totally. I do love that. When So when Henry finally approaches Lucy's table, a cover of the song Hold Me Now is playing in the background and that song is in The Wedding Singer. And it's like there's going to be a a lot of music connections that we'll talk about later on.

But I just think like that was a nice little touch. It was driving me crazy trying to figure out what part of the Wedding Singer it's in. I still am not 100% sure, but I think it's like after Love Stinks and he's in the dumpster and Julia's like, well, Glenn and I set a date so you have to play our wedding and he's like all bummed out and she's just like a sad. I think that's where the IT is in The Wedding Singer. Someone let me know. I didn't get a time to check. I tried and I couldn't find it, but just like in the first scene of The Wedding Singer, they are so cute together right off the bat.

Like you just love these people together. Their chemistry is so sweet. Like they're so darling together. They really are. You can just tell they have so much. Love for each other but I was kind of thinking I and I've only seen blended once and like 1/4 times but same. I think that's just like part of why that movie doesn't really work for me because instead of getting that like first meet moment where you're like just smiling so big cuz you just love them. They like hate each other for the whole beginning of that movie.

And I think like, that's part of why it just doesn't feel the same, the same. Yeah. Yeah, I feel like we. Need to rewatch it and cover it. I mean, the last time obviously I saw it it. Was like on TV and it was the beginning and I was like this is not very good like I was. Pretty bummed about I was at the. Premiere, as we've talked about, Yeah. And I don't think I've watched it again. Yeah. And I don't really. Remember it super well, but I remember thinking like, OK, it's not Wedding Singer, it's not 51st dates.

Yeah, they're due for another one like we need to do. Yeah, we need. Something to add tons of palette network. Yeah. I love that her saying like the smell of his fishy hands is the best smell in the world and it because it reminds her of her dad and brother. Like so that feels so Drew somehow like, yeah, the best smell in the world and it's something like fishy kind of grass. Yeah, I totally agree. There are some, really. Sweet lions in this that also feel like them and, like you said, like they actually love each other, you know, So it feels like some of the things like, you know, it's not romantic love in real life, but there's something about the like, real respect and love and like, I don't know, knowing each other that feels like comes out.

Yeah. Like. You laugh. I like. You making me laugh? OK, so you pointed this. Out and I loved it cuz then I was. Like Oh my God, I have something to add to this. So there's another yellow car and Drew has yellow cars in Mad Love, Wedding Singer and Never Been Kissed. So fun. And here's like another. Thing that I think is even. More fun. So in this movie it's a Volkswagen thing, which is like a rare Volkswagen. So it's like very recognizable. And then the two of the other cars are, well, two of the other cars are also Volkswagen.

So in Mad Love, of course, it's a Volkswagen Beetle, the Herbie car, and then in Wedding Singer it's a Volkswagen Rabbit. I was like, hey, I love that. See this. Is why we have you on the pod and for the car info for like. A a little tad of car info. I will never be the one bringing the car info. That's really cool. I love that. Thank you for sharing. You know, I was like, that's a fun little like tit, but I. Don't. I never thought about it and you just so made me picture them all anyways. I guess the Never been Kissed 1 doesn't have.

To be a Volkswagen because technically it's her brother's car. That's a good point. She drives. A Buick LeSabre. And it's. Not yellow. We get a pretty good. Look in this scene at the badge that we have in the Druseum, that it's in the scene outside, it's hanging on her bag and it's like supposed to be like her work badge. Yeah, it's kind of a funny. Like why did they even? Bother it's such a like not needed prop but it's always attached to her bag and now it's attached to the druseum. Exactly. Although.

Unfortunately, that signature is not in her handwriting. Yeah, and also we'll talk about this later, but something else in the movie is not in her handwriting, and we wish it was. And of course, this scene ends with a really cute excitement over a crush dance. And they're, you know, it's like that's like almost like record scratch. They turn around, they both catch each other doing it because the van that's blocking them pulls away. It's so cute. It's a silly, but it's. So cute. It's so cute. Oh yeah.

And he's like, there was a bee on. Me. Drew plays that part off really well. Like I really believe he he probably improvised that line because she looks like she's genuinely laughing, but like trying to not be embarrassing. That's so true. Anyway, so that ends there like first meeting. Yeah, and they and they make plans to meet the next. Morning. Great, right? It's going to go so well. So we get a little fantasy scene. Here Henry is playing golf with Ola and he gets knocked up by a golf ball and he has this fantasy scene where where Drew is on the beach as this fantasy girl and she's saying Motorama Gus guess wait, wrong movie.

You haven't won yet if you know. You know, if you don't, sorry. But it. Definitely reminds me of that and it cracks me up. Supposedly, they said this is where the famous scene from the movie From Here to Eternity was filmed, which was done at Hilona Cove in Hawaii. Does it look the same to you? It doesn't look the same to me. And the director says in the commentary that this was in California, so I don't know what's going on there. I didn't get too into it, but it doesn't look the same to me. I mean, this picture that you put in there, it's so hard.

To tell like what's in the foreground, what's in the background. But they do say it's in California. So I don't know. I bet we could do some more investigating, but I'm not sure. Yeah, maybe get Lindsay. On the case, but it would be It's cool to think that they were like. An homage to that, if nothing else. True. Maybe that's what it really was. Yeah, there is a funny blooper of Drew in this scene where she's like walking and she gets hurt and she's like, effing barefoot and rocks. Like, it's really cute.

And of course. We love a tattoo. Peek around here. When she pushes Henry down in this fantasy onto the sand, we get a little peek at her jade tattoo on her back. So love that. We always love that and like the further. Away it is from like anytime she would have been nude and you're seeing a lot of her tattoos, the more it's like, Oh my gosh, they're still there. Like of course you're right tattoo why? Why is that so? True. I totally understand what you know what I mean. Like especially like. When's the last?

I mean, she's has so many on her arms now. It's different. And yes, I also I I love the like the the repeating sort of the fantasy turning into nightmare for. Him. And I just want to eat. You up? Yeah. Tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day and the next. Day, OH. My and the next. Day and. The next day, yeah, it's kind of funny cuz he's like. No, I can't. I can't do this. I don't like commitment. So he goes on a date with someone else, but all he can think about is Lucy. So then he does show up the next morning for their little date.

Of course. Supposedly it's going to be their date. OK, so. We're back at the. Cafe for their date the next day and Adam finds out basically immediately about Lucy's condition because he goes in and she doesn't know who he is and she's very confused and he's immediately like talking about his fishy hands and like his walrus she makes this face at him. That's like. Repulsed and then like I think she calls him a creep and then we have a flashback to the accident. So in the original script, since it was in October, it was actually a pumpkin instead of a pineapple, and it's splattered during the accident upon impact to symbolize Lucy's brain.

And they talk about that. They kept trying to like, make that happen with a pineapple. But a pineapple does not explode the way of, you know, a pumpkin does. That's interesting. But we learn about. What happened? To Lucy that she she and her father were in an accident. They crashed into a tree and I did the cow die? Was I don't? No, the cow is OK. That's right. I do love. Amy Hill, who plays. Sue, the cafe like owner, she does like such a beautiful job in this part, like telling the story of what's going on.

So props to her. I always crack up at the line. There's like certain lines in this. I'm like, oh, yeah, I love that line. I forgot. I always used to laugh at that when. So she tells this whole story to Henry and he's like, this sounds like something I would tell to get rid of a psycho girl. Am I the psycho girl? I think that's so funny. It is a good line. So now we know what's going on with Lucy. She's got the short term memory that wipes clean every night when she goes to sleep. So we're kind of seeing now what her life is.

So it goes and shows us. First of all, I just have to say it's kind of weird that Lucy and her brother Doug are both these adults living with their dad. Never like explained. I've never really thought about it but I was like. Why don't they both? Live at home, right? And at first when I like saw your note, I was like. Well, maybe the accident happened years ago, right? And he's trying to protect her. And I was like, oh, no. But like, if they continued on this path, she would. I mean, I guess they.

'D talk about it, she would just get. Old. And then what would happen? But yeah, already, like, I think they're supposed to be what would you guess? She's in her 20s, thirties. Yeah, I mean Drew's. 20. 8 when they filmed this right? Yeah, yeah. So. And I think. Shawn Astin's a little older than her, I would guess. Yeah, it's kind of funny, but we get to. See, like every. Day, her dad paints his like, garage white and gives her paint to just go at it and do a mural. She is an art teacher and she's an artist.

So I always think it's like so sad that they like paint over it every night, but it's so sweet that he like, takes a photo of it, you know? And then you noted that there's an elephant in this painting. And Drew has said that she chose elephants as like, a symbol for her character because of their memories, like how they're known for having a great memory. See it later in her room, too, in the movie. So that's just like, a couple times. Yeah. It's. Neat. But it's just like an Easter egg that like, she was like, this is a symbol.

Yeah, Drew, so we see that like I said, this whole. Sad and sweet thing that the dad and the brother do for every day. They like get rid of the cake that she made for her dad's birthday. They grab a fresh new pineapple from the freezer and the newspaper that they had like 1,000,000 copies of from the day of the accident. Yeah. Yeah, the day of the accident and then the. Song Another Day by Paul McCartney is playing over it all. And that song was Drew's suggestion. She brought it in on a tape to a story meeting.

And she said that kind of became her mantra because it's I think it's like about somebody who's just like bored with life and but you can still find like some joy in it. So I do really like this song. I mistakenly thought it. Was The Beatles. I mean, it just happens a lot with Paul. But I do really like this song, and if we didn't put it in this episode right here, it's because Beatles songs get flagged and it bothers. Us so true, I'm sure, Paul. Is just as stingy with his lights and saying no I'm just kidding.

But anyway, it's a really sweet song. So that's what's going. On with her life. Every day, her dad and her brother reset it so that she doesn't know that she is reliving the same day. Like, she doesn't know the difference. And is that sustainable? Probably not. So we'll see what kind of needs to happen here. Yeah. So even knowing about Lucy's condition, Henry is still just, like, besotted with her. He still wants to get to know her. So he's trying to come up with, like, all these ways to meet her every day.

And like, I could not believe that I forgot. No doubts underneath it all is, like, under this entire montage. And that, no Doubt is my favorite band. So I was like, oh, I got really excited when. Yeah. And that was one of those. It's like one of the things that feels like a little reggae. Yes. One of many, yeah. Right. It fits the vibe I. Like when one of the times that he like tries to get her attention and meet her again, he had earlier done the like toothpick and the make a door hinge on her Waffle House thing and touched her thing.

When he does it the second time, Lucy's like, are you from a country where it's OK to touch other people's food? I love that it's like. You don't know what her mood. Is like she might think it's the same day but doesn't mean she's feeling the same way. Right? Exactly. I thought it was fun. Doesn't Nick even say like she doesn't want to? Be hit on during her breakfast. This isn't a disco or something like that. Yeah. And she like another time to get. Rid of him. She's just talks in Chinese and like pretends she doesn't speak English.

I was really hoping she would have mentioned something about that in the commentary and she doesn't. But I'm like, so curious what she's saying because I know that she had learned a couple phrases from the master, the stunt coordinator on Charlie's Angels. So I was like, so curious if it was one of those things that she learned, Yeah, that's I bet it. Was, I mean, yeah, probably. If nothing else, she had the confidence to, like do that because of that, Yeah. And eventually. Henry does this like really fake thing where he's pretending he doesn't know how to read and he's crying over the menu and the teacher in her can't help but come over even though she knows he's full of shit and they're like have a whole flirty thing but then he gets like scared of the commitment again and he doesn't ask her out.

She's not happy.

Really. That's it. That's what all that. Flirting and. Phony. I can't read stuff. And then you're not even going to ask me out for my phone number? I can't read. Oh, shut up. No, no, no, no. This is what? Happened I it's. Mahalo for the ego boost you're. Right.

So at this point. Lucy's dad and brother tell Henry to like, stay away, and Henry plans to like be really sneaky and find ways to like see her and meet her. So technically he's not going to the cafe, right? So. Let me get a whole. Montage Another montage There's lots of montages in this movie. OK, so a montage of. Sneaky ways he's trying to get her attention. Meet her and I love that you noted this. So they show her driving, which is always so fun, but it has this like mad love feel to it and I think there's a couple reasons it's probably like like coastal driving.

I feel like maybe shown in mad love, maybe maybe not either way, but then it's like an open top car like her one in mad love. I guess it's yeah O'donnell's character's name, Matt. Matt yeah, that. And I. Think there's something about seeing her profile, There's a part in Mad Love where she's driving her Volkswagen and it's like her profile. I don't know, it just immediately made me think of that. And I was like, I love that Her Volkswagen in this and her Volkswagen in that. Yeah, OK. So. One of.

One of the. Ways that he tries to meet her is he pretends his battery's dead or maybe he kills it I don't know is it actually dead and then he tries to like trick her that he's getting electrocuted and then she in turn tricks him that her like grandfather died trying to start a car it's so good my. Grandfather died. Trying to jump start a car. Oh.

I'm sorry, I I was just joking around. I can't believe you fell for that.

And then? There is a moment where. He pretends there's a road closure and I like that. They talked in the commentary. This was fully ad libbed and Drew, like, specifically talks about the look that she gives Henry in that scene. And she said it's like, like that character, just almost like she didn't say this, but like, found her soul mate. Like out of all the people in the world, she found someone who also does this, that funny little thing that she does because she gives him such a cute look. Yeah.

Oh, yeah. She's like, you do. Yeah, exactly. And the director said. He like. The director said he couldn't hear them when they were filming it, so it was just them. Like, I know I was like, that's really cute. It's. Really fun. Yeah. We also get. A little. Quick part where he sacrifices his little Penguin and puts him in the middle of the road and hoping that she's going to stop but instead she dropped ACD and I just love the nostalgia over like pulling out ACD book in your car guys. If you don't know what that was like you're young.

Also like dropping. ACD that's real. Yeah, like and leaning over because, you know, why not? I'm so glad Willie the Penguin was OK. Oh, very much so, yes. His. Next little move. Is he has ula pretend to attack him on the side of the road so that she stops? Yeah. And this was always used in the trailers. I feel like this is, like, such a moment. Everyone remembers. And she's so funny. Like, yeah, she is. Take that and that.

She looks like she's really wailing on him, Yeah. Well, in a. Featurette Rob is like in character as Ola and he says that she thinks he thinks she was having a Charlie's Angels flashback and whacking him too hard and he says hey look Drew I'm not Lucy Liu like she would be hitting Lucy. Liu. I know, but it's still funny, Elsa. This is another scene that there were like a bunch. Of ad libs and apparently, and one of them was that drew like brought in like I'm in the community watch program, which I think is so funny.

I was like, that's like a great that I was like, that's memorable. Good job, Drew. You did good. Hi. Sorry, I'm in a community. Watch program and yeah, he's. He's gone now. I would imagine. With this group. Of guys like she kind of had to bring her a game of improv, which she doesn't normally maybe do as much. Even this little featurette that's on the DVD where Rob is Ola and interviewing her and Adam as themselves. Adam and Rob are like riffing and Drew just has to go along with it and like come up with responses on the fly.

Very yes. And, you know, it's pretty cool, I guess, like you do, that people are like. That type of comedian. And like, yeah, I don't know.

And then one of the last little sneaky things he does is he pretends he's been kidnapped and he's, like, tied up on the back of his truck. And oopsie, guess who drives by first is Lucy's dad and her brother Doug. And they're like, what are you doing, bud? Like, what the Hell's going on? And then they tell, they tell Henry that Lucy sings, only sings on the days that she meets him. It's really cool. It is really cool and then they show. Her in the garage painting, and it's the first time we see her singing.

Is it? Wouldn't it be nice? Yeah. By The Beach Boys. So yeah, we're. Kind of learning you. Know Lucy doesn't remember meeting Henry or anything like that, but she's a little happier even though she's still reliving the same day she's a little happier on the days that they've like met and flirted or whatever they're doing right so they've noticed and they're like. OK, we can try something, Henry. And then we have a bad day. At all. So this part's so hard. OK, sorry. Go ahead. So. Henry sees. Lucy at the.

Cafe. I don't really remember the exchange, but she says she has a boyfriend and she says his name's Ringo. Is his last name Starr McCartney? It's so silly. I like. It she's not in the mood to. Talk to him this day. Right, So. At the cafe, like, right, kind of right after that moment, Lucy realizes she's getting a ticket on her car outside. So she's getting like a parking ticket. And this is when like kind of everything blows up. She like figures out that it's not the day she thought it was, that she's a newspaper that her like, you know, family has been handing her every day.

Like it's a it's more than a year later, but I like the scene where the cop is. Like telling her her plates are expired and like I like how Drew like is really angry about it. She's like, this is ridiculous. The tags don't expire for seven. Months expired May of this year, no. No, no, they expire. May of. Next year, Officer, I think there's been a misunderstanding. I don't this is ridiculous. I'm. Not paying for this. It's October. Excuse me, can I borrow this look? October, Lucy, Let's go back inside.

What? I guess she gets in her car and drives home because. She's like Hawking on the horn. And that's when the. Dad's like we're having a bad day. That's right. That's right. Bad day, Doug. Or whatever he says. Yeah. There's a scene that was cut where Lucy's, like, flipping out in the garage and, like, throwing her paint cans on the wall, and then she runs out to the pier. And then. Yeah. And then I saw this pier in person. I was in Hawaii a few years ago. I don't even know how long ago it was. Now it's called.

Called Waikoni Pier and I almost forgot about it. As soon as I saw it, I was like, Anne was there. I now remember the. Journey there that it was like. Way up on the North Shore, like almost like as far up as you could go on the road. Wow. In the North Shore, Like it was. I remember his way up there because. Did you go just to see it? Yeah. That's awesome. Yeah. OK, so. This is just. It's so sad. Like she's realizing the truth. The dad is showing her, like what they do every day. This is the reality.

Like they show her a photo of her in the hospital and the article about the accident. And I'm always I was. I literally wrote don't make me cry, Drew. Yeah. It's so sad. It is. Really sad. Drew talked about how much range that she was able to perform on this day and she said she was like clinging to the director, like making sure you got the tone right. She says it was a really hard day And and the director says like he knew that she had to like really had a job to do that day and people really, really like on point and like giving her the space that she needed and all this stuff.

But that's so cool. And he I mean, he's just like commending her incredible performance. I mean, like I said, she's making me cry. So it. Worked. Yeah, I mean it. It's. It's in a comedy to. Have something where suddenly. You have to reveal this like like. Really traumatic thing that's happened to somebody. And then she has to like, act like she's learning. That for the first. I don't know, it's a lot. It is. She does great. So then. They like she's like I need to meet. This doctor, her dad says she's done it before, but they go to meet the doctor that, you know, worked on her brain basically after the accident.

I'll say a couple of things about it before we kind of get into the scene. So the institutes called the Callahan Institute, and it's named after the company Callahan Auto and Tommy Boy, which is the same director. I thought that was a fun little thing. That is fun, especially Drew went to that premiere. And you love that outfit like that. Full circle. Always, always. Coming back to the Drew. Circle yeah and then another little tidbit is that the doctors played by Dan Aykroyd he had been in two other of the directors previous movies but also he's like major SNL yeah alum so huge for Drew.

I think she like says like icon or whatever she says in the commentary like that makes sense and it's great like he's. Great in it. He's like. Only in a few scenes and he's great. Perfect. Perfectly. Dan Aykroyd. Totally. Oh yeah, and you love. My girl, right? Yeah, that's cool for you. I like that. I've always. Thought she looks. Especially pretty in this scene, it might be because it's the first time her little clipped back hair is just like down. I don't know if that's it or if her makeup is slightly different, but she just looks beautiful in that scene.

She really does it. It's very. Funny, we have like one of the. Adam Sandler, dudes, I don't even have his name written down, but you'll guys know who he is at one of the security guards at the Callahan Institute is the guy from the beginning of The Wedding Singer who gives out alcohol to the kid at the wedding. So that's like a fun little, you know, through line. And then we also get Alan Covert, who is Sammy, the limo driver in The Wedding Singer. And then this movie has a very small part. He is 10 second Tom.

A guy whose memory resets every 10 seconds is very silly Tom. And this is where my favorite. Delivery of Marlin because he's meeting Tom for the second time within 20 seconds. Marlin. Hi, I'm Tom. Hi, I'm Lucy. Hi. Doug, hey. Marlin. But you know it's. Kind of interesting Lucy comes away from this, you know, kind of making peace with it. She's upset about it, but she is interested about this guy, Henry, who she doesn't really know, but he's clearly there for her. And she's, like, says to him at the end of the night, like, I don't want you to strike out tomorrow.

Yeah. So bring me some lilies. They're my favorite flower. And I thought like, oh, I was hoping it would be Daisies. That's interesting that she picked Lily's something different. Well, I thought maybe it feels like more. Hawaiian or something, maybe. I don't know what it is. OK, so now we get into this whole new thing, this whole new era of the movie, basically when they're trying something new. Yeah, it's so cool. So Henry gets the idea. Like he's like points out, you know, not only is she learning about this horrible thing that happened to her, but she's also learning that you guys are lying to her every day.

Like she has to deal with that too. So he's like, can I just try one time? Like if it doesn't work out, you know, it's OK. She's not going to remember. And so he makes her this video, this Good morning Lucy videotape and delivers it to her with daisies. And she goes and puts it in and it catches her up on everything, that it's like a bunch of silly, like pop culture references. And then like, here's what why you don't remember them and tell us about the accident. And then Henry is talking to the camera directly.

And it's very sweet. I think it's really funny that there's like a little Red Sox World Series joke, like the Red Sox won the World Series. Ha, ha, just kidding. That would never happen. And it's like, oh, it comes out in 2004. And then she goes and films Fever Pitch and they do win the World Series that day and that year. It's so funny. It is really funny because it's like. Did they make it happen? I know and also I noticed in the. Credits it mentions like that that was a like a specifically put in there as a jab against like 4 of the guys who worked on the movie.

It's so funny. So also in this video. We have Ola kind of playing Lucy, so he's like wearing a pink. Shirt and has. Coconuts for boobs and a mop on his head for hair, and I love that this has become such a popular Halloween costume. So as Lucy, like if you just Google Ola 51st dates costume, you'll see a ton of what I'm talking about. It is different, right, right. It is really funny that that. End up being a costume. I'm Speaking of costumes. What did you do last year? Yeah, so last Halloween. So the previous year my husband and I had done The Wedding Singer and I was like, oh, it'd be so cute to do 51st dates is like a little follow up.

You're going to do blend the next, right? Yeah. Oh yeah. Everyone will recognize that. So we were Lucy and Henry, and then our daughter was a pineapple. So it was really sweet. I really would have liked my older daughter to participate, but like, what's she going to be Henry's assistant? She's going to be a green. She loves cows, doesn't she? That would have been perfect. Missed opportunity where? Were you last year when we were planning this? Dang it. Yes, the video is incredibly sweet. Her face the entire time is also really sweet.

And I love the fact that Drew Drew was reacting to nothing on the day as Lucy. Oh my gosh. Yeah. Like the? The director was just. Describing to her what she was supposedly seeing in the video and she was reacting to it. So like they knew what the contents were going to be to some extent, but she had nothing. She was looking at a blank screen. I was like, that is that's really cool. Makes it like that much more amazing. I mean they're. Like, yeah, that's like master class. That's so cool. Yeah. Good job, Drew.

Yeah, totally. And. Then we have them going on like actual like love dates. Yeah, now that every morning she knows. What's going on? She doesn't want to relive the same day. So now they get to have a relationship in a totally different way. Yeah, so we got. This really beautiful scene where drew an Adam of being shot in like the golden sun like looking and the scene is like towards a tree. It's like silhouetted and glowing. It's so beautiful. Really. Yeah. It's so pretty. And they're like noticing that the bark was healing and it's the tree that she hit with her car.

I think I had never realized that before. They like noticed the lion not till this time. So I love. That you noted that. And apparently Drew and Nancy had to fight for this scene to stay. I'm very curious why. I don't know if they like super explain talk about it a little bit I think. It would they just kind of thought like, oh, we can cut that. But Drew and Nancy were like, no, this is like the transition moment like this is like really important to the love story. So good job guys. I'm glad flower won that.

I'll say one more thing about like the the. Like scene. I think they said that the director of photography is from like he's like a famous director of photography. I'm blanking on what films they said he did. Unforgiven was the 1 I think. Maybe he got an Oscar for that one. They mentioned that one a couple times, but like this I feel like they're maybe talking. About it even in the commentary during this or something, maybe not but this is what I picture I'm like oh there is this like beautiful like this is like cinematically beautiful.

Totally. Yeah, they also talk about. Just one more thing. About like the the scene and the lighting because it's so gorgeous. In the commentary, they say it was like really difficult to capture this light and they were like running around to make it happen. It was like, because it's like, it's just disappearing. It's like literally. The sun is like on the horizon dropping. That's the sunset for you. That's part of why I love. Them, it's like you gotta run out and see it right now because it's going to change in fleeting.

It's ephemeral. Yeah, it is. Yeah. I always this is. One of the. Dresses that I still have it to this day, the blue like Navy blue dress with the white polka dots. And this is the one that she's wearing in the poster. So that's pretty cool, right? And it's it is super cute. Yeah. So they just have like all this cute little flirting moments in the scene. And I don't even remember what he says to her, but she does. A little cat hiss back at him. And I was like. It's like. Yeah, it's just like in Babes in Toyland.

How we noticed she does it in that I love that she's so consistent Yeah, exactly their. Next. Little date is. They're at a party on the beach with all her friends. Like she hasn't seen her friends since the accident. It's just crazy. This one was filmed in Malibu and we have paparazzi pictures of this being filmed. It was like a really big deal when those came out. I remember we get Maya Rudolph, which is really fun. And I was like, oh, apparently she's also duplex. Don't remember that. No memory.

No memory of that. She's Drew's like. Work friend in the movie. So totally forgot about that. That's really neat that they've done that twice now. Yeah. And on the Drew Barrymore Show in 2024, Maya said, like she was so excited to get to go to Hawaii and work with Drew and Adam, and then they ended up just doing it in Malibu. She just. Had to like. Drive down the street and I don't know if she's. LA based. I feel like she is and. Unfortunately. We didn't even mention it with Henry's assistant, but Lexi, yeah, we get like these transphobic kind of jokes.

And we had these in The Wedding Singer too. Don't love them. Haven't aged well. And there's like a whole thing with a character with that which I just want to like acknowledge it, that we both are like, I think it's important to acknowledge it, but it. Also feels like that's a little bit like, maybe not now, but like Adam Sandler's humor, Like, that's obviously like their side. Yeah. So this is OK, yes. This is like at the. End of, like, the party day or it's the evening at the beach, and Lucy starts to record Henry with a camcorder, like, kind of saying she wants to like, through her own eyes, sort of like, tell herself the story, what's going on with her.

Like, so cool. Yeah. And in which she. Asks, Do you love me?

What do you? Want to know?

Do you love me? I didn't mean to put you on the spot. Or anything I. Was just asking more for informational purposes as to keep the video up to date as possible. Sure. Love is a very loaded. Word. I see I I go to this. Restaurant Every. Morning and I see you there reading and. I love you very much. Probably more than. Anybody could love another. Person. And it's, it's really sweet. It's. Beautiful. It is really sweet. Drew said in the commentary, too, that that the scene, like, really captures the way, like, the world falls away when you're falling in love, which I think is so sweet because they, like, isolate themselves.

And then it's sort of like they're alone in this, like framed by this, like, cave. I don't know. It's really cool. Yeah, since you mentioned. The Cave it is the Leo Carrillo cave in Malibu. Cool if you guys wanted to know that it's really hard to see in this shop because it's dark, but this is the first of a couple times where we mentioned the eyeliner. We have this eyeliner that we love that Drew used to be like part owner with Jillian Fink Dempsey's line Deluxe, which doesn't exist anymore. But there was this eyeliner called Chimpy Blue that we loved.

And it turns out that Jillian's current line also still has literally even named Chimpy Blue eyeliner. Jelena found it for me on Poshmark, like a brand new one that was like super inexpensive. And so I bought it and then a couple days later the person's like, I just moved and I can't find it anywhere. And here's your money back. So I still need to get my Chimpy Blue. But even if it's not that exact one, it's definitely like very inspired by it, definitely akin to Chimpy Blue. If it is not chimpy blue, that's a very specific look that we loved, so I love that you pointed it out and of course this.

Begins the like. Reoccurring thing of Lucy saying nothing beats the first kiss. So sweet right? And it like happens every time. They show these like it's a date montage basically. So we, so we go now to the lighthouse that I saw in Hawaii, the Makapu lighthouse, really sweet little scene. She says nothing beats the first kiss. There is a pineapple field. And in the commentary, they say, like, similarly to the tree thing, it was like fleeting light 'cause they're like, also like silhouetted on the hill.

And they said like, Adam and Drew had to like, run up to get it. So sweet. But again, a kiss. And then then we go to the aquarium where he works. Yeah. So I'm. Pretty positive. This is the shirt that I own. I have a shirt like all of the costumes from this movie were sold by Sony, so I bought this one. It looks very brown in the movie and it looks green in person. But we know that lighting can be really tricky. But I swear to God, when I first got it, it had that indoor water smell that, you know, like, you smell it like Pirates of the Caribbean.

Interesting. And so I'm like extra convinced it was not the aquarium that is the scene. Do you remember how? Long after the. Movie came out, they sold the costumes like when you bought it, it was immediately like. Very soon after the movie came out and, and luckily we have a lot of the auction pictures in our files. So fun to see all the things that they sold. Yeah, yeah, totally so. They're like making. Out a little bit and I love that Lucy says this to him as he's like a feeling her up.

Doing nothing I was. Just getting some lint. Off for you. You're going for a field ski. All right. It is really cute cuz. Like, once again, you're reminded it's all new to her. Yeah, I know. When you really think about it like. Sometimes you're like, oh, is that uncomfortable for her? But like, there is something she senses about this guy that's familiar to her, you know? Right. I mean, I I know I started thinking about it more. Like, oh, you have to convince yourself, but you're already in love.

Yeah, it's wild. I know. And then we get. To meet the walrus Jocko. Who's so cute? He's like, he's a character in the movie. Yeah, he's so cute. The beginning part where he does. That little like, dance with Adam. Oh my gosh, adorable. Drew said. She loved him so much. Get ready for this druism. She practically strapped on a saddle and started riding him.

That's an image. It totally is. And of course. She said that and like. They she decides to take. It to the next level with him and they go into his little aquarium room that like he has a window in the actual tank and like Ola is in there swimming and like making little, you know, sexual gestures. I'm like, this is such a like Sandler movie thing. Yes. And, and I love that Lucy's just laying. There looking like oblivious, yeah. OK, then we got like. This incredibly sweet song. So Adam Sandler writes a song for the character just like he did in The Wedding Singer.

So it's called Forgetful Lucy. And just like with the wedding, singers grow old with you. Drew hears it for the first time while they're filming and insisted on it. Yeah. So her reactions are genuine for the first time. It's so smart, so cool and so sweet. Yeah, that.

Was the place we like each other right away.

Like you didn't Remember Me in the very next stage. Forget it's got a nice couple. See. It's definitely like more. Comical than grow old with you. Like, it has sweet moments, but it also has, like, really goofy for the laugh moments. Yeah. So it's not, I don't love it as much, but it's still precious. And there's like, dolphins jumping behind them. It's a it's a very romantic moment. It is. So there is a little deleted scene here where after they, you know, get a little busy at the aquarium and he sings her the song.

Henry takes her home and Marlon is waiting up for her. Like, you know, she's like 20-8 but OK. And Henry let's Marlon and Doug take his boat out for the night to go fishing in the night. I guess that's the thing you do. And so then when Lucy, like, finds out that they're alone, she invites him upstairs in a very, like, flirtatious way. But it ended up feeling redundant since they literally had just quote, UN quote, consummated the relationship, like earlier that evening. So they just took it out.

But Drew looks really pretty standing on the, like, the little balcony next to her room. Yeah, she does look really pretty somehow that. Like that robe and the like. I don't know what it is is why does she look so incredibly pretty? She just does. They said it was like the. Scenes of her. On the balcony were like a reshoot because they didn't have the upstairs of the house when they were doing the original filming. And I was like, that's so interesting. I started to like try to, I didn't like go back and look and see if like her hair looks really different.

But it might be worth looking. That's funny, if you can tell back into the actual finished film we. Get a scene of them about to fall asleep together in Lucy's bed. And it's really sweet. Like he's trying to keep her from falling asleep because her memory is going to reset. She's like, I promise I won't forget you. And he asks her to marry him. And she says, of course. And it's like, oh, how sweet. But you know, her memory resets, yes, so I do. Kind of like. That we get. Like verbal consent from her at some point that she, yes, she would want to marry, but sort of standing a little, like a little.

Better. I guess like she has had this is. Like, is this supposed to be, like, pretty soon after, like the video? I guess we don't really know how much time has passed. We don't. But still. Like, I think, I mean, obviously things are fresh for every day, but I was also going to say like, still, like, relatively new. Yeah, So we get to the morning after. So they have literally fallen asleep together in the same bed. This is like, you know, unprecedented in this moment. And this is like a big trailer moment as well because Drew, like, she opens her eyes and immediately screams in his face.

I mean, of course it's done comedically because it's comedy, but she's freaked out. There's this basically a stranger in her bed. Terrifying. Yeah. And then? We get elephants. On her bedroom walls. So that theme of like, you know, the good memory of the elephants is, like, shown again in her bedroom. And at this moment, I think it's, I think she's just like overhearing something. Yeah. Lucy learns about Henry's dream of taking a boat to Alaska. So she's learning like this is. I think he says something like I have to stay here with Lucy.

She's making. Yeah, progress. Yeah, I know. And the. Doctor's like she's not making progress. Like that's not a thing. She's never going to remember you. Like, please don't believe that. And it's important that that's stated. But he still wants to stay. And, you know, now she's starting to feel a little bit guilty, I think. Yeah, totally. So Lucy visits. Henry at his. Work and she's coming to break up with him. It's kind of cool. They hosted like a dozen children from the Make a Wish Foundation on the set this day.

So we have a couple photos of Drew talking to them. There's even like video footage that somebody put on YouTube. I made an entire YouTube playlist of 51st Dates content, so I'll link to that on the episode page because there's all kinds of fun stuff out there. Awesome. But back to the movie. So Lucy brings her journal to like show Henry that she's actually been writing to herself every night as well, which is really cool. But I'm so bummed that it's not in Drew's actual handwriting because usually she will write things for real for her characters.

And I don't know if it was just like too big of a project. I was just going to say. And they're like, think of how many? Things that she was. Like cramming in back-to-back, like as far as movie she was filming. So they're like, at this time. Good point. Like, we can't have her, like, help with the props this time, sadly. But I know we always are, like, craving for, like, things to be in her handwriting. Totally. Yeah. And there's really beautiful close-ups of her in this scene. And again, you can sort of see that blue eyeliner we were talking about on her lower lids.

She's gorgeous. And I think you're totally right that it's. Like, I don't know, it feels like like Chimpy has such a specific like, yeah, brightness shade. Yeah, that like, I don't know. How do we find out for sure? I guess there's probably no way when we when we ever get Jillian on the. Podcast. Yeah, that's true. OK, so then we get this scene that that they kind of say in the commentary, it was hard to like, execute. So Drew's got this journal and they're trying to kind of show that she's like removing him from the journal while rewriting the parts that she, like, needs to remember.

Yeah, cuz she wants him to go live his dream. Yeah. It's really sweet. And I'm like, they keep like seeing little, like whatever things that I don't know what I was going to say. I was going to say something about like one specific scene. Yeah. There's things she wrote about him and. They're like, oh, he makes a funny sound if I kiss him here, do it often or something like that. Oh, OK, I'm glad you said that because that's the thing, I was. Thinking of, but I was like, she says like I'm going to miss that.

And when she says that, I'm like, does she mean because today she did it? Or she just imagines she would miss that. Right. I was like, it's a cute. Line. It's a cute exchange, but when she. Says that it takes me out of it just to let that it's pretty funny. And then we get. This scene in the pouring rain where Lucy asks Henry, could I have one last? First kiss and of course, her white shirt. Ends up completely wet, because of course it does. And I think that's funny because I've always noticed that.

I know. I feel like I remember you like. Mentioning it, I think of you. And I think of that scene that's. Fine. Well, I mean, rain also is my thing. The director says in the commentary that they had to blur out her nipples for the airline cut because apparently, like, that's something that you can't, like, show on an airplane. Oh my God. And then Drew says the twins. It like, really makes him laugh. So that I love that it's like a dress and that they like make a joke out of it. It's really, Oh my gosh, that's great.

So then we just get like, I called it the sad montage. So Henry, he's broke, been broken up with, so he's going to go off on his Alaska trip. But before that, like he's preparing and there's just all these sad moments that they show. Lots of montages. Like we said, I think it's really cute that he's at work and a reflection of light goes on his face, just, like at the beginning, a reflection off of her knife at the cafe caught his attention. And this time it's her with, like, people, I think, from the Callahan Institute.

And she's holding a clipboard. And like, that light shines on his face and he kind of, like, gets excited. She looks at him and she just, like, gives him a little smile, like, oh, you're cute and walks on. And then he's like, Oh yeah. And I always left her little cloud shirt here. It feels very different for the character, but I'm like, oh, that's always fun. I always liked it. I like clouds. It is really cute. I would wear that. And then, like I said, Henry. Is going to leave and Marlin gives him ACD and again, I'm like, oh, I just love how CDs and videotapes are totally so prevalent in this movie.

It's like the end of that era. I know like which is they're still there and it almost feels too late for them, but like they're going to be gone soon. I mean it's I'm just going to say it again. It's 20. Two years ago and they were like surprised that that was in there. So weird we're of the physical media era like we it's hard for us to not think that way. I still have my C DS. I don't listen to them but I have them. Same. OK, so the CD. That they give him is a Beach Boys CD and he immediately is like, of course they give me something that will remind me of her.

And then they they cut to like him playing it and then like singing and crying along to The Beach Boys song that she sings. Wouldn't it be nice? And Drew says she's like, I love this scene so much. She's like really my favorite scenes of the. Movie like she. Says it cracks her up so much. It it is really goofy. It's so goofy. That's funny, yeah. She like, says she loves it. I mean it's. Like one of those things that like it's again, crossing that line of like, it's really sad. But of course we're like they have to remind you that it's a comedy.

Yeah, that's true. I always. Get like a little confused at this part is like why he thinks that this means she remembers him right? Like doesn't have it doesn't work for me. Yeah. And well, she's like they're trying to tell me. Something. Yeah. He's looking for any reason to come. Back you're. Right, OK, right. I like it when you think of it. That way he's like, I really don't want to go right so. Like he. Rushes to the Callahan Institute. He knows that she's there. She's like, moved to the institute, I think, right?

She's like working there, right? Teaching art, I guess. Yeah. She walks by one of her art students and she says, Julia, that looks great. And I'm like, OK, that it has to be intentional. It has to be. It has to be. Yeah. So Henry comes up to her and he's like, do you have any idea who I am? And she's just kind of looking at him interestingly, but she says, no, but I, I'd like to show you something. And so she takes him into like a backroom that we're all her artwork is and studio. Yeah, it's all renderings of him.

I don't know who you are, Henry. But I dream about you, almost. Every night. What would you say? If I told you that. Notebook you read every day used to have a lot of stuff about me and. I would say that that makes a lot of sense. Oh, it's so precious. Like it's so sweet and they say in the. Commentary that they didn't want the the paintings to be too funny. Oh, and they said they wanted like. The egg to. Get the laugh. So like everything else, they show the all the other paintings and then they go to the egg and that's what's supposed to be like, Oh, finally that's funny.

But you kind of look and it's like they're actually like really awesome renditions. Like there's I know and I love. This Nancy Javonin owns one of these, and you can see it in a listing for her and Jimmy Fallon's Penthouse. So I'll share that picture on the episode page because it's really neat to see. That is so fun. Yes, and when when Lucy says to Henry, Henry, nice to meet you, it reminded me that she's also with a Henry. And ever after, I don't think I've ever made that connection. I just suddenly did towards the end of the movie on.

This last watch, never before so and like, no offense to Henry's, but it's not really a. Name that like makes me think of a hot guy. So hey, it was my grandpa's name. I'm sorry. Yeah. Are you just pretending that your grandpa? And he died from jump starting a car. I mean I'm just pretending. Gotcha. Now what does she say? Can't. I can't believe you felt it. Yeah.

OK, so then we we get to our ending in Alaska. So this is kind of like a whirlwind wrapping up basically what happened to them. But it's it's neat the way they did it. Yeah, so Drew and. Nancy. Felt very strongly that the ending needed to be what it is rather than quote UN quote what it could have been like if they had like sold out and said Lucy was like cured, which is something I guess the studio wanted. Like that would be a terrible idea. Yeah. I'm not surprised though. I think the. Way of like, oh, I dream about you is a really good compromise.

Yeah, me too. I don't remember you. But like. You're in my mind somewhere, so you made an impact even though my mind. Is broken like that feels magical. It's like magical thinking on its own, but also like she's not healed totally. It's an ongoing process. That's why Drew's like, how do you Make Love, say is such a good thing for this? Yeah. So Drew said the original ending in the original script was her saying you should go and live your life because there's no life here. And he goes away as he does.

And he comes back and he walks into the restaurant and he just sits down and says, hi, I'm Henry. And the film ends. So like the same? Idea he's still like doing what he's doing, but like, I guess she doesn't get as happy as an ending. Some people find the ending of this movie to be like a horrible, scary, awful thing to imagine which like. I think I've even seen it recut as. Like a horror fell well, if she. Has a bad day? And she has a bad day on a boat. Yeah, I also. Found something where the director Pete says that there was a script version ending that had Lucy waking up in bed and she had a mural that she painted on her ceiling that tells the story of her accident and her life since.

And then as her eyes pan from left to right, she turns and sees Henry lying next to her. But because she's seen him in this mural, she knows he's safe. She's not as freaked. Out which is really like a. Beautiful way of doing it. It's pretty cool. I guess I could see how like if that had been done. It's very visual, like, yeah, but that would have probably been hard to execute too. It'd be hard to execute and I guess they really like the. Idea of also making sure that like Henry still went and did his dream right so they they like that idea a little bit more yeah so yeah.

So Lucy. Wakes up and. There's her tape and she puts it in and she finds out that she's married. Yeah. So again, I'm like, thank God that we saw him propose in her, except. Right. And I I always. Love seeing. Bride. Drew in movies. I don't know why, it just really, really does it for me. I feel like I like all her movie bride looks more than her real bride looks.

She looks beautiful. Yeah, she does. And it's just such a short scene. I think there's a little bit more in one of the other like featurette type things, like another little clip and you see like a little bit more of her dress. Yeah. But yeah, so the I guess, I guess she's kind of started to explain that she watches the tape, but I think she still doesn't know she was where she is. No, because Henry says like put on a. Jacket it's really cold outside or something like that. That's right. So. This is another like, big CGI thing.

So the scenery and the wide shots were shot in Blackstone Bay, Alaska. I'm just going to say one thing about Alaska, I guess, before I move on. I was like, yeah, oh, Alaska's so much closer to Seattle than Hawaii. That's because I always. Thought like. That's. Very far. I wonder if. It was Alaska in the original script and then they just left it a lot of sense I bet. You're right because think if you were to go to Alaska from. Seattle, Yeah. Like it's still. It's probably still long, but. It would be like weeks on it anyway, So I had that thought and I was like, Oh, just knowing that geography, like geographically as a W coaster, like, you know, anyway, so so back to the scene.

So scenery and wide shots shot in Blackstone be Alaska drew on the boat looking out the window was shot on a stage in Hawaii. So just like completely indoors and I love that we have footage of this. That's. On the DVD, it's really neat to see. Oh, it's so cool. Yeah, it is. To see like before they kind of edit in the like window, it pulls back and then they're outside. The other boat scenes that she's in were done in Hawaii with Alaskan background overlaid. So like huge CGI. Also, she says she was like sweating in the parka in Hawaii because she had to like pretend it was cold and they had to like CGI like breath, you know, like it was cold outside.

I. Also said something where they said. They had like. Like buoys in the water and then they use those to be for like iceberg, right? Right, it's it's, I would never would have thought, though it's not something me neither about. And it's like done very well. It's done very well. And also this scene is incredibly heartfelt. So she's like, of course she finds that. But it's like, anyway, it's also like you said, like scary cuz she's like, OK, she finds out she's married. Then it's revealed to her by looking out the window that she's on a boat and then she goes upstairs in the boat to the deck and she has a daughter.

Oh my God. Cuz I don't think they she learns that on the tape. No. You think they would have put that on the? Tape. But then it wouldn't be as impactful because we get that moment, right? She hugs, I'm gonna cry. Just she hugs the little girl and she says, Oh my goodness, good. Morning.

Oh my. Goodness. Grandpa's here. Yeah, the way she says it is very. Like, it makes you, like, crack immediately. Yeah. Drew gets choked up in the commentary during the scene and says it's so meaningful that Lucy and Henry are making it work. Like she's just like, this is like going so far to make it work somehow. It's also wild that's before she. Really had daughters in real life so but it makes it extra just gets me and I do love that her dad is also there. I think that was a great choice because it's like okay someone I know is here and I'd like to think that even if her memory is never going to be fixed, like something about re watching this tape everyday like feels familiar at least there's like the more she watches it the more the less freaked out it is.

But I don't know, maybe that's just me trying to make the ending nice. Scientifically it can't be, but. It's like, OK, fine, OK, Dan. Aykroyd, I am a doctor if you didn't. Know the movie is. Dedicated to it, to the. Memory of Adam's dad Stanley Drew in like when they're talking about this in the commentary, she says that old Drew adage about Co workers being her family and she says like the familiar and the familial, which I really like. It's really sweet. And like, you know, she's I don't know, they're like she's like kind of branching off of like how they are her family.

I don't know. It's really sweet. That's so sweet. Also, her dad died the year this movie came out. That's kind of wild. Yeah, I didn't think about that. And then I had to laugh because I get to the end of the credits and all of a sudden a cover of Spandau Ballet's True comes on and we talked about this in Charlie's Angels that it's it's in The Wedding Singer, ends The Wedding Singer. Again, the other song connection, it's in Charlie's Angels, supposedly, once again proving we don't know, Duplex.

Supposedly it's in Duplex. So I just was like, Oh my God, what is with this song in Drew? It just follows from everywhere True Drew. And this time it's a. Cover performed. By Will I Am and Fergie. So all the songs in the movie, we're going to talk about soundtrack, but they're all like 80s covers, so it's really fun. OK, let's talk about the movie coming out. And. The last 22 years, it's legacy. That has a lift on. Sheesh. OK, so. The title was changed by the studio to 51st dates when marketing found that the term kisses was turning off guys.

Too cute, I guess. Too cute. So dumb. So dumb. Yeah, a little dumb. It's fine. 51st dates is. Still great. But that's just such a silly Yeah, there is annoying reason. 51st Kisses 51st. Dates. I don't know, I'm so used to 51st dates, but there is something cute. But yeah, about the kisses. Tons of promotional like events for this. Of course, it's a huge movie. Drew is on like ton of magazines made like TV appearances with Adam and by herself, including SNL, which yeah, she hosted on Valentine's Day.

I remember. So it was like the day after the movie came out. That's so cool. And I feel like really? Her star on the Walk of Fame was also tied into publicity for this movie. Like, we have a feeling that Sony slash Columbia purchased the star for her, right? The executive Amy Pascal is the one who speaks at Drew's ceremony. Like, it's interesting when you watch like, more current ones, it's always like, really good friends or really close Co stars. And I'm like, we didn't even know who Amy was that day.

Like, who is this lady? Yeah, right. I just think that further like drives home the fact that it was very much like a promotional emotional. And it's always interesting. To me that Adam wasn't there, even though, like, they did more stuff together later on in that same day. So his schedule was probably packed, too. Yeah. That's true. We talked about the red carpet premiere briefly on our previous episode because we did this week at Drew History and we were there at the premiere in Westwood on February 3rd at the Mann Village Theatre.

It was a big star-studded event, but I don't really remember. Oh really? Do you remember? Any like highlights? Immediately. I mean, it's just really neat if you. Go to Getty Images and look it up. Like almost everybody from the movie is there, and everybody from the soundtrack, which I think is like, kind of special to me. Like, I mean, there's so many people from the soundtrack who were there. And I do remember getting really excited when Tony Cannell from No Doubt was there. I do remember that I have a picture.

I probably have tons of pictures that I take. Yeah, they're on our drive and then. Fab. Fabrizio Moretti, Drew's boyfriend at the time, was also there, but they didn't, like, walk the red carpet together. So like he was there with Julian Casablancas from The Stroke. So that was like, fun. But yeah, it's really neat when you go look at the pictures because it's like everybody from the movie and it's just super. I have to go and look and remind. Myself so Drew later went on to promote the movie at premieres in both Berlin and Madrid.

Did they have any like New York? I don't think they did. They just, it went straight to Europe. Interesting, kind of interesting, Adam. Wasn't with her at those. So again, like just booked and busy, booked and busy. They're like, here go. Go, go, go talk about the movie, Joel. Yeah. Go represent, yeah. So then the film actually was released in theaters in the US, as we said, on February 13th, 2004, which was Valentine's weekend. And it was exactly 6 years after the Wedding Singers 1998 release, which I just love.

And it's also so crazy be like, there was only six years in between those. That's what I was just going to say. And how many years was it then to blended 10, OK. Right. I mean, so we're in 2014. I yeah, think so. And then now. We're at 12 years since. Anything way overdue, but also the time. Between wedding singer and 51st. We will never not be surprised. The how small the amount of time is between like every year in the 90s? What is time? What? Is time. I don't understand time. Andrew said at the time.

That she thought people were going to enjoy the movie because it is so romantic. And I just thought this was so cute. This is what Elle magazine was sort of saying about it. She said she believes with all her heart that the world would be much improved if we strive to be a bit less shaded and spent more time sprinkling a little fairy dust around. That's so trail so 51st dates is like her Pixie dust. And she was also just so. Happy to put a. Gift out into the world of joyfulness. And yeah, I definitely felt that way when we saw it.

We mentioned Saturday Night Live. Earlier was one of the things that Drew did during the promotion and Adam and his whole gang came to Saturday Night Live when Drew hosted during the films opening weekend and in her dressing room they announced how the movie had like broken records and was a huge hit and the whole room was screaming and dancing. She says this whole she explains this in Wildflower. I mean, I feel like she was a couple. I don't know if it's the same chapter where she talks about like, box office, like stress.

Yeah. I mean, it's come up in like. Articles that we've read a lot too, how as a producer she has to care about that, but normally she would just like to make a movie and like, it's the experience and she just wants to move on. But yeah, when you're a producer, you have a responsibility to perform so. Luckily, thankfully, you know, for her production company and all those money things, it opened in the US at #1 in the box office and stayed on the top 10 for six weeks. The movie grossed more than $198,000,000 worldwide, which I know is big.

Yeah, it was a success. They definitely made back their budget more than yes it. There were mixed reviews by critics, but audiences loved it. It's kind of I feel like every Adam Sandler movie for the most part is going to get that right. Critics are just not into hand except for like things. He's getting huge. Accolades for now. More serious generally, yeah, but I pulled some. Really nice notes about Drew's performance that I wanted to share here. So, The New York Times said, as soon as Miss Barrymore shows up, the forces of coarseness and idiocy surrender.

Before her bright, soft smile and sly good humor, Drew is like. The perfect balance. That's what makes this palatable. I think If it didn't have something like that, I would not enjoy it. And she makes Adam so lovable. You know, Entertainment Weekly said the movie, for all its genial idiocy. Wow, idiocy in two reviews, Oops connects emotionally by tapping into the frustration of Lucy's condition. Barrymore has such a flaky, bedazzled charm that you start to get invested in seeing her rescued. Just nice.

And then people said Barrymore hits emotional notes that are pure, simple and unforced. That sort of talent can almost literally light up the screen. Drew as a light. Take a drink, someone. Said she's a light. We mentioned the soundtrack, so it was a pretty. Successful soundtrack included a lot of reggae influence covers of 80s songs. You've mentioned them throughout a couple times, but it's a great soundtrack. Like it is really fun. It is, I know, and props to. My man Tony Canal of No Doubt, he Co produced a lot of the songs along with Nick Hexham of 311 and there's a couple 311 songs in the movie too which I love and we saw three 11 together.

Yeah, in Santa Barbara, that's. Right. I just think it's like a fun way to like do a tribute to the wedding singer where it's like 80s music again, but now it's island style, right? It's just fun. It is really. Fun. And then I didn't realize this until just last night doing some more. Research The score was done by Teddy Castellucci and he also did the Wedding Singer score and apparently he's in Robbie Hart's band in that movie. So I know, but I think. That's really neat. And I, you know, I wish I. Known that as I was watching the movie, but like my memory of the score, I'm like I can hear it I think I can hear it the.

Movie was released on Home. Video that was a thing at one time guys, I guess it kind of still is but not like it was like dropping for streaming yeah. So the DVD was released on June 15th of 2004 Wow that's quick. I know I was thinking the same but I guess. That's how it was, yeah. There were tons of special features. Which guys? This was such an art. Yeah. Including a director and drew commentary recorded a month after the movie's released. We both had forgotten this existed, so it was really fun to like.

I was fully like. Director and cast commentary. Well, Drew didn't do that. Wait a second. Yes she did Oh my God. Also it says cast and it's. Just her. Like, it's kind of funny at the very end of the commentary, which I've we've been mentioning it throughout, but Drew calls her contribution to the commentary hippie blabbering. Vomit of the mouth, of course. She does, of course. She does. I feel like you would also. Say that about yourself on the. Podcast, right? Yeah. I don't know. What hippie? But like annoying slabbery.

Can't. Stop talking. Disagree with Ann? Leave a comment. Don't. I'm not fishing, OK. There's also a 7 minute blooper reel which is a joy to have that many so fun. Like it kept going. I was like yes, same. I can't think of anything like. That stands out, but it's great, the whole thing. I mean, she does a cat hiss and that too, right? She sure does, she says. What if I wake? Up like this. Because that's how I wake up in real life. I'm obviously not good. At a cat hiss. Sorry, guys. There we go. That's the only one, OK.

Blooper reel and making a featurette that's also, like, fun in 20 minutes. Yeah. And it has, like, lots of great footage. You mentioned, I think earlier this Ula's movie roundup, that was the special for Comedy Central where Rob Schneider's literally just his character. It's really funny and they filmed that. In Honolulu in 2004 during the, like, movie release promo time. So it's kind of neat. Yeah. I love that they included that. Yeah. It's fun. And a few. Deleted scenes which we've mentioned throughout like stacked DVD we.

Talked about this in the Charlie's Angels episode. DVDs used to be so awesome and have so much content on them and that's just gone. It's I mean hooks. I have like one more like thought about. That like, I realize now they just expect that like all this footage is just coming out like on social media. Yeah. So like, why would you then want it on a DVD but like, you'll never be able to get it again later. Yeah, it's not the same and like. Commentaries are so awesome. Like I think are the only other ones Drew's done.

Johnny Darko and riding cars with boys. I think so. Like I remember being so bummed that Whip it didn't have the director's commentary. And it's like, already at that time, I think the studios were like, yeah, we're not putting money into that. And like, what is it? You're just like playing a movie and recording. Them talking. I know another kind of neat thing about this being. Released on video is that this is one of six, the very first six movies that were ever released on Blu-ray. They included this one, and it was on June 20th, 2006.

Yeah. So it's like OG Blu-ray? Do you have it on Blu-ray? I don't think I do. I think I just. Have the DVD, but I think it's all the same I think I like remember looking at the time and I probably didn't even have a Blu-ray player right and I think it was all the same features so it like yeah bothered. I don't know if I have. I think I only. Have Donnie Darko on Blu-ray. I have Scream I. Have many copies. Of Scream. That makes sense. That's probably one of the only two just continuing on with the success of the movie.

At the 2004 MTV Movie Awards, Drew and Adam won Best on Screen Team, and then later that year at the Teen Choice Awards, they won Choice Date Movie. So you know, it was a huge success. People loved it. Critics maybe thought it was full of idiocy, but everyone else liked yes. In 2005, Drew and Nancy participated in a question and answers and screening of the film at the Arclight in Hollywood as part of a Masters of Storytelling series. And we were there, Yeah. It's so neat. And thankfully, there's some.

Footage that the like master storytelling thing, like released, right? Or is it somebody that was there? I don't know who put it up, but it's on. YouTube, so we will link to it and we get a really special shout out at the very end of that. So guys, just watch that and know that we are quote UN quote, the coolest women in the world. That was us also, I remembered. Earlier today they gave us like a little. Commemorative glass, yeah, 51st dates on it. That's where we got those. That's funny. I don't think I realized it was from that, although I. Know exactly what glass you're talking about?

Yeah, yeah, of course. It's in my memorabilia collection, of course in 20. 20 at the. Very beginning. I think it was like week 1 of season 1 of The Drew Barrymore Show. Drew and Adam film this little skit of 51st dates like here's here's what's been going on in 2020. Like it's Lucy putting in the tape and seeing all these 2020 things. It's very sweet. I love that Adam did that with her like for the show as she was starting out. Drew claims that the wig she wears in this little skit is the wig she wears in full throttle in the hot dog on a stick scene and that Mister Daniel just like reworked it.

I I just don't. See. It looks so different. Like so different. I mean, I guess I don't know, like wigs are just like hair. So I guess they could have like maybe completely brushed it out and it was that long, but it looks shorter and it looks like it's blonde in the little video behind the scenes, Mr. Daniels, like, starts talking about. He's like, oh, it's a very short wig originally. And then Drew's like, Oh yeah, it's from Charlie's Angels, it's this one. And I was like, what? But hope? I mean, would she have kept that all those years?

I don't. Know I almost wanna see what other wig from Charlie's Angels full throttle. It could be if not like the only time, but it could be anything like that, OK. Well, we just don't know. Well, I guess I'm looking right now at the length of the bangs. Yeah, maybe similar, I don't know. It's it's full, it's far fetched. If it is true, yeah. If. If so, props to. Mr. Daniel, because he did a really great job with that. And then Robin Fredericks, who did the makeup for 51st Dates, did her makeup for this little scene, too.

I love that. And the last thing is. Part of its legacy up through basically now. In 2025, there was a musical stage adaptation in the United Kingdom, and Drew had sent in a supportive video to the cast and crew about it. And I don't remember it at all. Oh, really? No, I unfortunately, like, have no memory of it. And because it's get full Lucy. Yeah. Yeah, that's me. But it's very sweet. She's like, very. Excited about it and she's talking about how like again, I think she brings up like this is about making love stay and like, we should always have you to strive for that.

Unfortunately, it's been deleted from her Instagram. Don't ask me why, but you can still see a small snippet of it on the show's Instagram. So I will link to that on the episode page. Cool. And that's it. Oh my. God, how do you say few in Hawaiian? Aloha, yeah. Everything is Aloha, right? Everything is Aloha. Exactly. What a fun. Movie. I had so much fun just digging into it over the last two weeks and just kind of reliving it. It had been a while for me. Yeah, since I've watched it. Me too. It still holds up for me.

I think after my initial viewing, I might have ranked it higher than The Wedding Singer, but Wedding Singer still has my heart as like their number one. I still love that one a little bit more. But this was a great follow up. And Drew was right. Like, this is it. This is the one. She was totally right. Yeah. It's really sweet. I loved. Having an excuse to rewatch it as I do with all of these but this one, it like it reminded me how much like how much I love it. Like in the I think I said, like, I don't know if I would like it if it was just Adam's team, Adam and Julia Roberts.

No, that wouldn't have been it for me, guys. I mean. Drew is there like a thing that he did in Hawaii with? Jennifer Aniston. I've never seen it. Probably not a thing. It probably is a thing. Yeah, just not, not the same. Not the same. We love Drew. Drew like. Makes it. Yeah, Drew makes him, I mean. Just look at those reviews, they all kind of said the same thing. Idiocy. This is an. Idiotic movie until the. Beautiful Drew Barrymore brings us into reality. All the Adam Sandler fans who. Like stayed with us since they he was on our podcaster here and we're talking about how he's idiotic.

I'm just kidding. No, when he's with. Drew He. Is so sweet and beautiful and I do really appreciate like how he acts with her and you just. I just always remember this clip of her on the set of The Wedding Singer and she says I would really be in love with Adam Sandler. Yeah, it's perfect. I can. You're saying it exactly. The way she. Said it so I can hear it and that's how I do it. So thanks you guys. Sorry to the Adam. Sandler fans who think that we are being rude, we are not.
