I'll do you true. I'll do you true.
Hello and welcome to How Do You Drew? This is a Drew Barrymore podcast brought to you by the fans, friends and historians behind the Dursiam. We're drawing on over 25 years of Drewby expertise to dive into all aspects of Drew's world, from her personal life to her professional career. Thanks to our sponsor and friends at Positive Medium, I'm Ann. And I I'm Ashley and this week we are discussing our. Personal. Favorite red carpet looks worn by our girl Drew. This is going to be so fun going through this.
Like literally when you're saying like all aspects of Drew's world and I'm like this like literally her whole life. I know I. Was like reviewing while doing this like a little bit of research like. It's also wild that we've never done this. Like it feels like we must have done this at some point, but Nope, we did not. I literally, I was like, Oh my God, did we do this for the website because we had like a top five? Yes, we did. We did a long time ago. Oh, did we? Yeah, it's gone though. It like got lost when our site got lost.
Anyway, this is totally unrelated too. OK, I was just going to say like we did magazine covers because I remember that list too. And we've also done our favorite of Drew's performances. So if you guys want to know some of our other picks, we will put links to those on the episode page. Yes. Can we do some follow-ups to our last episode? Yeah. Our last episode, 121, was all about Drews film and TV cameos, and we had a caveat at the top. We were like, hopefully this is the definitive list. We've probably forgotten something.
We. Kind of joked about it a lot, Like, yeah. So, I mean, first thing is I want to say is that I think some people consider Batman Forever to be a cameo. And that did not meet our criteria because first of all, she gets like opening credits billing, like a cameo would never have that. And she's in quite a few scenes. It was originally supposed to be more like a cameo, but the role was expanded. And if you guys want to know more about Drew's involvement in Batman Forever, you can listen to our episode 1/07.
It was a really, I really enjoyed doing the research on that one. I had so much fun. I was just gonna say, for how little she's in the movie, I feel like we talked a lot about her involvement and it was really fun. That was a weirdly fun episode. I just had a message from our friend Jolena who she just listened to it and she loved it. I was like, I love doing it. Thank. You, Jolina, we love you. OK, so we also just wanted to mention that we did miss a few cameos. It's bound to happen. Right, we're human.
I guess we're not the perfect Drew Barrymore Encyclopedia as we claim to be. We're using like so many sources, and then still things pass through. So in 2005 there was a movie, Stewie Griffin, The Untold Story, where Drew has a voice cameo as herself. And this is Drew at like an event or premiere. And she her date is a kool-aid man. So that's kind of funny. And we will link to that as well. It's on YouTube. And the next one was pointed out by our dear friend Tess. She was like, hey, guys, remember in 2022, Drew did a Simpsons voice cameo as herself.
So she had done a guest appearance in like 99 on the show. Right as a character. As a character, yeah. This was like a very literally a cameo. It's like 2 lines or something and she's herself on the phone with Marge. And that is season 34 Episode 4, The King of Nice. Yeah, and that's, I love that, Tess pointed out. She said like The Simpsons is huge in her household. And I was like, that's so cool that like she like pulled it out of like 2 fandoms. I don't know, like, that's really cool. Yeah. Thank you, Tess.
Yeah, and last of all, in 2023, Drew was on The Eric Andre Show as herself. I remember the ridiculousness of her. Like she was like, overly. I'm passionate, right? Like as herself. It's like this panic moment where I don't even want to try to explain it, but she's like comes in. She's like I'm Drew Barrymore. I'm an empath. I can help. And it's like it's very like it's over the top tarot comedy. It's very strange and like what? What just happened? It's very Eric Andre. I guess if I know like very little about him, I can see that it goes that way.
Like, almost like weird, like over the top, but just like, a little bit comfortable. Like what? Yeah. All right. OK, so now we can move on to other things at the top of the episodes. So let's talk about things that Drew's proclaimed her love for recently. I love, love. OK, Drew loves a loaded baked potato. Yum. She loves a Diane Keaton baby boom moment.
She loves fried green tomatoes, which I remember her proclaiming her love for that like decades ago. So I love that consistency. I. Think I've seen it once and I do remember. Enjoy, right? I need to see it again really. I've seen it a lot. It was like a favorite of mine for a while. It's like also the other Mary Louise Parker movie where she's like sick and kind of in a lesbian relationship. Got it. Very familiar, yeah. Drew also loves coffee and steak together. OK. She loves a Japanese breakfast.
OK. Harold Ramis. OK. Watching cooking shows. No surprise. She loves when it's not unanimous. It's kind of that thing. If she loves the debate, all those. Yeah. OK, sit down. Did you know Drew loves The Beatles? No way. How was she not said that? I know, I checked. I mean, of course she said it, but like in any of the things that we specifically have covered, like. That's since we've been tracking. Yep, she loves Rod Stewart. OK, Drew loves America's Got Talent and Wall. Art. I like the wall art as a framework for many years.
I'm like, yeah, me too. Yeah, that's right. Now let's go into our mailbag. You've got mail. We got a really sweet e-mail from the lovely person who runs the Lucy Liu fan account Lunatic Fringe, which is such like creative name. I love it. That's cute. I'm this is just going to be a little small excerpt. She also shared a lot about Lucy's involvement with Charlie's Angels and she showed that she has she owns the red dress that Lucy wears in the massage scene with Tim Curry and it's like on a dress form and it looks so beautiful.
So I thought. That's so cool. Yeah. OK, so she said. I'm a huge admirer of yours and what you've been able to accomplish with your fandom, including your amazing memorabilia collection. The podcast is fantastic and fun to listen to. As a Lucy Liu lunatic, I especially loved your recent Angels anniversary episode. Thank you. Thank you so much. And we will link to that Instagram as well. You guys got to go to howdoyoudrew.com for all the episode links. And we love collectors. So like, just like to hear that somebody like has a costume and gives a shit about that.
Like, I don't know, you know, it's like. On a like completely separate but related side note, there is also an Instagram account called the Alyssa Milano Museum. OK. And the guy that runs that has been collecting for way longer than we have. And I don't know, I don't know how much you know about her, but she is like a huge like overseas, like she was like huge in Japan and stuff. I think he's French, but he showed his binders and it like put ours to shame. I couldn't believe it. I love imagining other collections like ours.
Actually I haven't. Why haven't I really imagined like specifically like binders of like photographs and clippings and stuff? I'll send you the post. Yeah, I I was nerded. Out on it. I mean, come on, I've got, I've got a sound for this. I love paper. Yeah, yes. I like paper. I want paper. Paper in binders. Thank you. I mean, we, I'm just, it's like making my heart flatter a little bit. I know, I get it. I got it. All right, Speaking of things that make our mind, our minds flutter, No, our hearts flutter.
Let's go into the kind comments corner. So. Sweet. OK, did you see this Instagram reel that went up today on the Drew Barrymore Shows Instagram account? I just watched it, yeah. Oh my gosh. So it's a, they show a picture of Drew when she was 10. And I know that we have talked about this before. She just looks, you can just tell she is just struggling, like she's in a sad place. The one part I remember, she says something like, if you look in her eyes, you can see that she's seeking like, who do they want me to be?
Yeah, yeah. She's just talking about how there was so much pressure on her for, like, her looks and her weight and like, you're not old enough, you're not young enough. You're not cute like you were in. Yep. Too heavy tea. Yeah. So anyway, of course, there's a lot of really sweet comments on that, but I like this one, and it has a mention of her being a light. So I thought this was a good one for us to pick. Take a drink. She's a mention of being a light. And this was left by Julia D Whitley and Julia says I see you.
I too is that little girl being told who and what I am by everyone but me. You have been a light for so many of us all through your life and now you are lighting up the sky with love, energy and soul. Thank you for being you. That's really sweet. I know that whole thing like really got to me. Yeah. And I think that she, you know, she's seeing that little girl in a totally different way in the last several years. And it's amazing. And it's amazing for us to go through this and see the trauma, like within the pages of her book, within like her life that's been so public.
Yeah. Did we talk about the sardines thing? I don't think. I think, I don't remember recording. Did you see where she like said she had a realization and therapy that she as a little girl is one of the sardines? Yeah, I did. Like it was healing. Yeah. Yeah. We love this stuff. And it's like, in a way it feels like woo woo, but in another way, it's like, no, like this is like healing you. Know yeah, no, she needs to do this. Work, yeah. From my like a very armchair yeah perspective, but like deep diving in little girl lost and doing all these other millions of you know hours of episode you.
Want to talk to her about them because we know her perspective is like, yeah, so interesting. So anyway, that was lovely, thank you for that comment. That was nice and that that post of Drew was lovely of her talking about that like that's really sweet. Okay, so let's get into what's new with Drew. Here we go with the news, everybody. Okay, so the MSC cruises, remember we talked about, we knew that she'd filmed a commercial. So there's just a couple more snippets that have come out about that. There's a cute behind the scenes video and there's also an onset interview with Drew and Orlando Bloom.
So be sure to check out their YouTube if you wanna see those. And again we will share the links. OK, so let's get into the next two episodes of Hollywood Squares. OK, so as of this recording, episodes 3 and 4 air. There will be more airing the night we record this, so we'll talk about those next time. This is really sweet, though. So we have a nice little, like, correspondence relationship with Deborah Ferrullo, who has worked with Drew forever as a makeup artist and she worked on Hollywood Squares.
And she sent us a sweet little message just kind of because I was asking, you know, sometimes Drew has this like, freckle here that gets really like. Colored in. Accentuated. Yeah. Yeah. So I was just like, hey, what's that all about? Like, I'm just curious, you know? So she said, hi, happy New Year. Yes. Drew has a little something there. Not what you call a mole, but maybe a freckle for this look. I think I was going for a 60s vibe, and I thought giving her a little mole would be cute. We do 22 shoot shows, and I try to change it up for every show, but sometimes there is just simply no time.
So we repeat a look and then she said as far as my process goes, I have none. I'm not a makeup artist that really thinks about it. I like to start and then see where it takes me. Honestly, I'm just crossing my fingers and winging it. I. Love it so much. And that just like that sentiment feels so Drew like, yeah. And like successful every. Like her Hollywood Squares looks are so great. They're so great, they're so great. Who's styling her for them? Is it Lee or is it not Lee? No, it's not Lee this time, but I'm sorry I don't have the name at the top of my but Matthew Kilgore is involved, which is OK.
Like saying that Lana does her hair but for some reason Lana is not in the credits. It's kind of weird. But like on social media, she's being credited by the other people who worked on the show. Assume that's correct. Maybe it's like more on like a team like that's lower level how I don't know. Or just like Drews personal like she's upbringing my hair stylist like she's whatever. Yeah. Who knows, I'll pay her out of my pocket. Like don't put it on the whatever. I don't know. I can't. I can't imagine what the reason would be.
OK, so the bonus round facts, I actually don't remember if one of them is true. OK, And this is so funny because the first one, I'm like, they absolutely filled these over the summer. Like no one listened to our last episode, but you talked about something exactly like this on our last episode. I did and I don't remember that. OK so the first one is that she almost lost a finger once making a smoothie. Okay, and I didn't know if it was true, so remind me like is it true or false? It's false, okay.
And you were talking about fingers in a blender because we were talking about the Santa Clarita Diet, first commercial. I was like, what are you talking about? Like when would I ever have mentioned that? That is so funny. Now I have the image. There, Yeah, so clearly somebody got there. It's false from that commercial. Okay, it's false, yeah. And then the other one was that she said Adam Sandler is her best on screen kiss. And that was true. And I actually for a second thought it was false because I thought I was thinking about how she like, kind of had to say that she didn't think Jake Jollenhaus was a good actor on some show.
And I thought there was like a kiss thing that ended up anyway. Yeah. And I think like, I feel like there's been times that she's been asked that and she's deferred like she never wants to like write favorite. So I was also. Like why? I was kind of not sure. OK, I mean, they definitely have like, won awards for being like, on screen kiss, right? That's true. Whichever one has the best kiss, they've won MTV. OK, so now let's talk about, like, one of the coolest things we've literally seen in a while.
So yeah, Backstar, if you guys aren't familiar with this, like, show, I usually just see clips on Instagram. I realized I didn't know there were long forms. So I'm like, stoked. So the guy basically has celebrities, well known people standing on the street in New York listening to music on headphones and identifying the artist. And it's always fun. Like almost no matter who it is, it's fun. And can you explain like how this totally was like structured interestingly? I mean, I first of all, I wasn't familiar with this.
So it was like double exciting for me because it's really fun. It's got like that name, that tune thing to it. And it just like appeared on Monday morning and I was like, what is this? This is so cool. So they're on the roof of the CBS studio building, which is really funny. And every song that was selected for her to identify, I was like, oh these were chosen with great intention. Because yes, pretty much every single one except the the last one, which is the only one she did not identify I could like very easily connect to.
Her same. So I was going to say it really quickly is that I don't know if that's usually the case. Things about it felt really different than the other ones. And she was like, she had just had him on the show, which I was like, that's so cool for him and yeah, so she didn't know this Wing Chung song. And one thing that was really funny is I was watching it with my partner who loves Wang Chung and. It's like they're one fan, no? Well, we had been talking about Wing Chun like the day before or like out before, I think it was the day before.
And then we watched this and he goes, Oh my God, they put a Wing Chung. Song in And then I had a weird coincidence with that song this week too. Neil and I were watching an old episode of Angel and the character Angel like sings Wing Chung karaoke. I was like, why is this song in the ether? That's so amazing. I need to get back on Buffy and Angel. By the way, I never finished. You should. I really want to anyway back to track star cuz it's so cute. It's so adorable. It's like my favorite thing she's done in a while.
And I was like, she loves music, like this is so her thing. Like it was so great. And it also, like, she had, like, a story for everything because, again, they chose, like, very good ideas for songs. And she just felt sort of like, similar to the Bill Maher interview. She just felt more like, relaxed and, like herself. Yeah, less performative. And like, obviously she has to be performative on her show, but this was like a very refreshing like. There's some kind of feeling. For me, it was so cute to see her dancing, like dancing to The Beatles and SZA and the Cure.
Oh my God. It was so cute and I love that we just mentioned that she said she loved The Beatles. Was it because of this? Yes. And I was like, this is perfect. Like it's I feel like when I think of who her favorite band is, I still think The Beatles. Me too, yeah. Like even, I don't know, does she mention it that much or do we just know that when she talks about them it's with such like reverence? Like, I think it's just that, yeah. Yeah. OK, so talk about the coolest part. Yeah. How much did you love hearing her not only talk about this story about making out in a car to Nirvana's never mind?
Yes, but also like she parlayed get into talking about her time with whole, which was like, you know, we always love that. Yeah. One of my Nirvana memories is is quite naughty actually. I had a big old make out session in a car with someone to that album in the morning sun and it was real sexy and fun and so when I hear that album I go straight back to that car. But eventually I weirdly ended up meeting Eric Erlinson from Whole and going on tour with Whole. And Kurt Cobain had passed at that point.
But I am the proud godmother of his daughter and I ended up becoming a part of that world accidentally. And how long has it been since she's mentioned being Francis Bean, Cobain's godmother? I have no idea. Decades. Was she at Francis Bean's wedding? I don't think anyone knows. I think it was very private. OK. But if you remember, Francis had posted like a bunch of pictures maybe over the summer and like, there's one that was Drew was in. So maybe, yeah. I mean, I love that idea of that. I know why is it so touching.
I mean, I think it's also just like we know that well cuz then Drew mentioned she never met Kurt cuz it was like the year after, which was yeah anyway, it's great. So if you are familiar with track star and you haven't seen Drews, watch it. If you're not familiar also like go watch it. That's great. It's. So good. Are you ready to talk about our favorite red carpet looks? Let's do it. I love to wear a dress on the red carpet. It feels so Cinderella fantasy. That is so perfect. That's totally the sentiment that she always uses. And she literally just said that on the show, like. It was posted today. What? I know, cosmic coincidence. I was just going to say, OK, so before we jump into like our tops, we're going to just do some honorable mentions. There are a lot. It's hard not to. I literally for this thing I went through every year where she would have had a red carpet and skimmed every folder in our candidates folder until I got to like 2015 whatever year I asked you like do I need to do this?
Like it took me so long. Girl, I don't know how you did. I don't know why. I mean there a couple did surprise me and I think that's why you were you were kind of surprised by my list. But anyway, yeah, there are lots of honorable mentions because it was hard to narrow down very hard. But it's also super fun to go through like these and maybe why we didn't pick them because I think I usually have a reason why they didn't make it like. OK. I don't know if I have like specific reasons. Mine are just like, it's just not quite there.
If I'm going to pick five, these are just right under there. OK, so we're going to do these chronologically. We'll also be doing our top looks chronologically, so we'll kind of be swapping wherever we ended up, including something. So it's kind of a weird little format, but here we go. OK, so the first one that I chose as an honorable mention is the CFDA Fashion Awards. That was in February of 1993. And at that, she was just wearing like a simple black strappy dress with like a little bit of a gold detail.
The red lip, like it's very simple, but she looks stunning. And her like blonde hair is like just perfectly like set. I don't know. Yeah, I don't think you're in the minority with that because when I did polls for the best look of 93, that's what everybody picked so. Yep, it's it's stunning. And I, I when I was going through this, I was really envisioning like what clippings was I always excited to get? That's a good way to do it. I mean, at a certain point I didn't have that feeling because there aren't that many magazines anymore, you know, So like after like 2010, that feeling dwindled.
It's. So weird, it's so sad. Anyway, so that's a beautiful line. So the first four are all mine. So I was literally like early on there were a lot like almost made it for me. Almost made it. All that. So the Tommy Boy premiere from March of 1995. This is just classic. Like I felt like I had to include something that was casual. OK, as much as she likes to Cinderella it up that this time she did a few like red carpets that were super casual. And so I just love little like stripey sweater. You can see her like personal butterfly belt that's like just so like special to her.
Super spiky hair in that. One right, right. Is she wearing one of the like hemp necklaces? Oh, for sure. She's got to be wearing one of her necklaces anyway. It's such a good look. It just I think it the hair actually was something that like, I like it, but I don't like love it. OK, the hair can definitely be a factor in some of my choices too. Right. I mean, this next one also the hair is not like quite there for me. So in 1995 as well, the Indiscretions play, Is this the one that's at the Barrymore Theater?
Yes, which we just found that out a couple months ago. Crazy. So cool. So this is from the April of 1995. Also just like classic beautiful, like this silky blue dress that's like kind of short. It's almost like Baby Doll, but it's also like dressy like, yeah, it's, it's, it's very like adorable and perfect for like a theater. And it's very 95 to me that dress like I'm like, this is exactly what it felt like. And her I'm talking about clippings like her vibe and the clippings, you know, like, and the her heels are so cute.
They're like a tee. Strap right? Like Mary Jane tee strap. Yeah, they're super cute. I mean, super cute. So that look again, almost made it. I mean, it's, it's so like I really was like right up there. I like the two of yours already have like a cigarette as an accessory on the red carpet I. Know. That's early 90s true. I was realizing how many cigarettes like from like 1999? How many 1991 to like. I don't know what year that stopped. 96 maybe, Probably. Anyway, Speaking of 1996, another one that almost made it is the Beautiful Girls premiere from February of 1996.
She's got this black velvet jacket with like a classic Daisy pen that we loved and have obsessed over. I'm sure. I'm sure we've talked about it. We have I. Found a little picture you showed yours and Tessa's. I don't have 1 yet. Anyway, another red lip and she's got the black hair and this like it's not the whole look. It's like her face and like her torso is just like so iconic. Her makeup was so beautiful on that. It's so beautiful. There's so much like contrast, like her skin is like Snow White white.
She's it's just, it's just a beautiful like simple look that really like just shows off her gorgeous face and lips. Like it's beautiful. I knew there was no way you weren't going to have 96 in your mix. Yeah, there will be more. OK, so now one that literally was like almost on mine and I just kind of allowed it to like flow into yours. Me. Too. Yeah. Well, it was so funny because I originally had this on my list and then like, the more I looked at it, the more I was like, I think it's just on my list because it's classic, not necessarily my favorite.
So this would be the Oscars from 1998, where Drew is wearing the black glitter dress. And it's like very low back and she just has daisies in her hair and tons of body glitter all over her. And yeah, it's like the dress is just like I don't, I don't really like the. Dress is kind of hoping. In the front, yeah, yeah. That's not a super flattering dress. It's like the glitter, yes? And the daisies. Glitter dipped. Daisy donned Drew. Yeah, I know. And that's why it works. But and it's like peak 98 drew to me like right when I was becoming a.
Fan, you don't love that hair, you know? And she even says, right, there's a quote, Yeah, about the hair. Like, specifically. I'll read this. So she said I didn't feel very confident with this haircut. But now looking back on it, I love it. This was before there was so much scrutiny about everyone's hair, makeup and wardrobe. And I thought that I should wear what I wore in normal life to the Academy Awards. So I picked up some Marguerite daisies from the bodega and put on a ton of body glitter. I'm also a huge fan of a brick red lip because it really warms up your face.
I can only imagine what people would have said about this look today. I think she probably got like good praise for the Looking magazines, right? Yeah, I don't remember it ever being like shot down. No it. Was, I mean, it's beautiful, it's right, it's iconic level, but it's not like the oh, that looks so good. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, OK. So that's why I didn't make my list. And then this one too iconic, the Charlie's Angels Full Throttle New York premiere from 2003. This is the one that is Internet famous.
Like the Internet loves this look. People do this look for Halloween. This is Drew in that my boyfriend is out of town T-shirt and she just has on black leather pants. Her butterfly tattoo is showing, which we always love. She's got those blonde extensions. She's just kind of rock'n'roll. She's walking down the street with a bottle of champagne. Like this is just a vibe. I'm always going to love it, but it's just like it's, I don't just look at the look and go like, oh, that's so beautiful. It's just more like a whole lore behind it.
Yeah, I was just going to say like the look itself, I'm like, I don't love a leather pant. Like there definitely were like other instances of leather pants like in like 95, like I think she was wearing like leather pants that boys on the side. And I'm like, I'm like, that's right. Like they kind of get a downgrade for me. But that look is so iconic that like it has to be that and it has to be the champagne and it has to be a costume for Halloween, like for some weird reason. OK, so now we're at another Oscars look from February of 2005.
I have just always loved this one. Like again, it surprised. Me. It surprises me. As soon as I pulled it up, I was like, yeah, like I loved it and I loved I would looked at a bunch of pictures and like it was affirmed. She loves it. She felt like she wanted to look very like grown up and like you can see that there. I don't know, it's never really worked for me, but I it's fun that you picked it. Yeah, she was like a brunette updo. So again, the color of her hair is like an interesting color for her.
She's got like a pink, pink lip, which almost seems like it wouldn't go with the outfit, but it's like perfect, like big kind of dingly, like they almost look like bells, like her earrings. And the dress is like strapless black dress with like kind of a pattern, but it's like really pretty, like both form fitting and like wide at the bottom. Like I don't know, maybe. You just like that it's kind of goth. I mean, that's not impossible, but I also just think she looks beautiful. Like if you just like, if you just take like, her shoulders up, like the way her face, I mean, it's also like her makeup.
And yeah, maybe I can feel the confidence in the picture is like, I don't know what it is. I love that. Like, I don't know. And that was her last time to ever attend the Oscars. Thanks, Oscars.
OK, Speaking of awards that she never goes to anywhere. My next, my next honorable mention is the Golden Globes from 2009. We just celebrated this one on our Jerusalem Instagram because it was like the anniversary. It happened to fall on the same day as the Golden Globes. Again, my birthday of all days. But this is the one where Drew has the huge blonde hair. She said she wanted to look like just had sex hair. And she's wearing a custom blue Dior Hot Couture by John Galliano gown. The gown is so beautiful.
I'm so happy she still has it. And this was almost on my list and I'm really glad it's on yours. I literally was like, we can talk about it together. It's so beautiful. And the whole thing is like, like the blue color is beautiful on her. Like it's almost like steel. Yeah. I don't know. It's it's a similar. Blue to the silky blue dress from the Indiscretions play. It's just not silky, you know, Like it's too like bluish dresses. I love that at the time this got so much Flack. Like people were like so against the her look.
Hair or just the whole look? Mainly her hair but like I did a poll in our post and every single person loved it and so many people were like this is one of my favorite looks like I was happy to see it. Like kind of has gotten its revenge. Yeah, and maybe like Drew fans loved it because we know that like, you know, her being like Vava Voom is not only her like that's. Such a good way to put it. Right. I don't know. OK, So what else you got? My next honorable mention is the Grey Gardens Los Angeles premiere from 2009.
This is drew with the very Sharon Tate 60s inspired bib dress and the huge hair. Again, very low back. You know her back because her favorite feature so she does it a lot. I know this one isn't one of your favorites, but I've always. Not, but it is beautiful. It's just not like my style. So I don't look at it and go like, Oh, I like can imagine. Not that I'm like always looking to imagine myself in something, but it's not like it's not like for me for whatever reason. But I do think she looks awesome.
Yeah, it's just like huge rings on just. She does 60s really well. I. Think and also 2009. So many great looks. Go listen to our Year in Review for that to hear about all of them. Crazy looks and crazy beautiful looks. Yeah, come on. OK, my final honorable mention because I just always think of this one. I always loved this one. I was like off the top of my head, it comes to mind is that going the distance London premiere from 2010. She was like, this is kind of like the version of ombre hair that like if you googled ombre hair, this would probably come up.
And she had some braids in it and she's wearing this very short olive colored Alexander McQueen dress. She had a really cool clutch by them too. And she had written breathe on her arm as like a test for her or tattoos she'd eventually get. And she just looks hot. Like she's got huge platform heels, Like, she just looks. I mean, you know, I love 2010, Drew. Yeah, I mean, she does look awesome. Like, kind of badass. Yeah, that's the Anda and Masha were her stylist during this going the distance time and they just freaking nail it every time with her.
I'm like, can you work with her again? Send her out to a red carpet? Just something. OK, so for this break, we're gonna get into our top looks. So that was just our like warm up guys. That's why we like kept those pretty short ish. Now the so we each picked 5 independently of each other. We did not consult with each other. So it was kind of fun. I tried really hard. I was like, yeah, I want to look at your list. I don't. Want a restraint? So we do have two that we share in common as our top picks, which isn't surprising.
I knew we'd at least have one. So yeah, we'll just each talk about it again. We're gonna go chronologically. We didn't do like a top, you know, counting down to #1 cuz that's just too much. Pressure, it's too hard. Yeah. So chronologically felt right for like an archivist that felt right to like her style in that way. So the first one that made it is 1995. Surprise. No, the Batman Forever premiere. Why is it so wonderful? Why is it on both of our lists we pick this one? Why is it like I knew that was going to be on my list Yes like so much.
I think like a picture of her from this is like one of the 1st 8 by 10s on bought on eBay. I'm not even, like, kidding. I love Nike. Nuts. Oh my God, it's so great. So anyway, let's describe it a bit. Again, Speaking of a low back. Oh yeah, yeah, really low back. I almost wrote in my notes. Lower back tattoo is an accessory because in a way it's. Kind of it's in my notes because it's really a part important to me personally. Yes. So OK, so the just like brief description of this is that it's two slips like a baby pink and baby blue, I guess slips that are like layered wedge sandals, which I feel like are iconic for her at that time.
And I feel like you love totally. Right. Yeah, she wore. Yeah, I do love them and she wore them a lot. Right and then a just a Daisy in her hair so simple in the Jane interview, we get to see her getting ready right and it's. Just that's part of why I think I love this because we get to see her doing her makeup like and it you can see it a lot better in the Jane Pratt thing because the cameras like up on her face. So like you can really see how like perfectly 90s drew the makeup was. I mean, let's talk about the hair and makeup just a little bit.
So like, she's got her, her short Pixie haircut. And I think this is like one of the best. It looks. Yeah. Like she kind of does it wild sometimes and spiky. And I feel like here it's like curly and soft and like she probably just like put a little bit of like baby oil in it, you know, like, yeah. And it's like. Down in the front with the Daisy and with the Daisy, like spiked up. Yeah, you're right. It's. It's like perfectly parted. There's something about it. And then the lips are. How would you describe that lip color?
I mean, I think this is a brick red, like she said about the Oscars 98 and the next one that we're going to talk about, I think she's wearing the exact same lip color. Like this was very, very 90s. And I'm sorry to keep talking about this, but I have to mention the necklace because this is another reason it made it. It's just like a ribbon. Black ribbon with a heart Locket tied to it, almost like choker length and that also like that. Like kind of like all the little elements. I was like Yep, Yep, Yep.
It was like everything. Well, here's why, like this kind of sums it up. So first of all, I do want to say the lower back tattoo. I just I know I've mentioned this before, but I had a clipping from spin magazine. It says the drew tattoo and I that like I don't know why it meant so much to me. And it was just a close up of her Jamie tattoo and her pulling the slip down a little bit to show it. And that influenced me getting my tattoo in the same in place. So I just, that's part of the reason I love the slug.
So it really is part of it. I remember that detail. So what other cool detail? So it's. So cool. So Drew Barrymore herself left this comment on our Instagram, a picture from the Batman Forever premiere. Crazy we don't get to say this a lot. So Drew, thank you for this quote. So she said I bought those slips and put one on top of the other and threw on a pair of platforms from my closet and went to the premiere. I wasn't at a place where anyone dressed me, so I dressed myself for about $50 and I love the care freestyle to this day.
And that nails it, The care freestyle. I think that's what we love about it so much. Yep, like it seems like she thought about it. Like very. Little yeah in the perfect. Way. I also remember in YM 95 when it's at like timeline the very last one is like she goes to the Batman Forever premiere wearing 2 slips she bought for like $20 each. Like that's how it ends and it's like yes that's our girl. She's so cool. And like, it's, I mean, it's also like, you know, she's like showing her entire leg. We get to see like Speaking of another tattoo, we get to see her cross tattoo.
Like there's something about like her. I don't know. Everything about it is like a perfect showcase of the 1995 Drew like. Yeah, a little wood nymph. Yeah, I mean this. I mean, I feel like if I had to rank them that would be really high. I do know when we had it on the Drusyam, that was our number one pick. Cuz we were just like how could it not? Be one of those that you always think of. All right, so we're not ranking, but here's some other awesome ones. So tell me that one that's on your list.
OK, so my next pick was the MTV Video Music Awards from 1995. It was just a few months later and again, this to me is just like one of those epic coolest looks she ever did. So this is the black strapless gown that has these sheer panels, I guess I don't know how else to describe them, but she she would hold them and put her arms out and they look like bat wings. So that was always like a thing cuz Batman Forever just come out with her, right? And the dress was made by David C Robinson, who was the costume designer of Wishful Thinking, what she was filming at that time.
And love her style in that. But anyway, I can't wait to talk about the movie just for her style In the movie, she wears in this, like, fantasy scene, a pink version of this exact dress. It's shown in black and white, but there's pictures, like stills that you can like, hot pink. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So that's in the movie. And it was inspired by Rita Hayworth in the movie Gilda. And she. Yeah, apparently she just asked David to make her a version to wear to the VMA's, which is so freaking cool. It's so good.
And then? Another reason it's really like stands out and memorable is cuz she's wearing this huge platinum wig, kind of Marilyn Monroe kind of not, but she, and of course she has daisies in it. And she said on the Drew Barrymore Show a couple years ago, I was like, for whatever reason, I'm going to break up the wig and throw some daisies on it, which you get. She's just like, you know, kind of winging it. Yeah, So I'll say two things that I think are funny. So not only was this, of course, on my honorable mentions list, it's too good.
The dress is good. Her style is good. That lip is like very similar to the other lip, like a brick red. I just noticed that the dress is a very similar cut to the one from 2005 at the Academy Awards that I was. Talking about yeah, you're right, it's got that kind of mermaid flair. Right. And like that one, I think had like a train or something that made it kind of flowy and like we got strapless. I'm like, wait a minute, I almost got to see this side by side. I'd like, that's funny. OK, so now I, I 1996 had to make it.
And this one sort of surprised me because not all the elements on their own are. Cool, I was surprised at this choice of yours. OK, so this is Drew's look from the From Dusk Till Dawn premiere from 1996. OK, so I'll describe the look, but then I'll explain what's not so great about it, I guess ultimately. I think I know what you're going to say. Well, OK, so she's wearing this vintage coat that's like a butterfly pattern. I'd almost describe it as like a couch upholstery fabric jacket. So we love that jacket.
I feel like we've either talked about it before or I know that we've talked about trying to find like a replica. Sure. Like weirdly. There have there are like short versions of it that show up every once in a while online, but I've never seen the long one. Right. Anyway, so that this white long kind of like slip dress. How did you just describe it? Like a long, silky creams. So that by itself, I don't love that, but it looks great on her. In contrast to the dark hair that's like wild and curly. The hair is a little big.
Is that what you're going to say? Maybe I was not. In some pictures you can see it's very big, but importantly, this was the the first time she went out with the black hair. That's a big deal. It's debut, yeah. Yeah. And then the other cool thing, I think in contrast to that white, so the she's wearing black shoes and then this like really cool Oval pendant that's like pretty large and it's black. So there's something about like it's both a white dress and it's like goth because of the hair. Like there's something about it that is just like in the rings.
I didn't even mention like or think about the rings, but she's wearing like a few rings on her hands. She also has that cool kind of rainbowy beaded purse that she had a couple times that. She was seen a couple times back. Then you can see it, like just barely. It's kind of camouflaging in with the butterfly coat, but you can see it down in the corner. But I always love that purse, too. But anyway, the look overall, it made it because I went Oh yeah. And then as I started looking at all the pictures, I was like, she just looks so beautiful to me.
And I know I ended up now with like one of the honourables and one here. Yeah. And then the other look that's she's wearing like a different cream slip dress, was the primal fear. And I was like almost, almost. Make it because I thought that she had her hair up with a flower. That was for some. I looked at them, I kept looking at them side by side and this made it for some reason over that. And that was on my honorables, and I felt like it was just too much 96. I think the real reason is because you love that clipping where they had to like, cut out her big curly hair, which I have still have to find a picture of.
I don't think I ever got it last time. Yeah, we have. Anyway, this look made it. I just think that she looks beautiful. I didn't mention her like makeup, but she's like her lips are kind of like a dark almost like a brownish red weirdly, but it works so. Beautifully, it's funny. Like if you take her hair away. This is just a couple months before she filmed Scream, and her makeup is actually pretty similar to Scream now that I'm looking at the color. Interesting. I could. So weird to imagine. Just swap out the hair like.
OK, so this one was definitely on my Honourables, but I'm saving it for this moment, so let's get into like, that's a great one. I appreciate you gifting it to me. OK, this had to be on the list, The Ever After Florence. It actually wasn't the premiere. I put premiere, but it's actually like a gala that they did because she went to the premiere in Florence for it and she's wearing a different dress. I was looking at it and I was like, oh, the in contrast, like I was like, it's kind of pretty. Like she makes it work.
But then this dress in comparison is just like it blows our mind. This is probably one of the coolest gowns she's ever worn. I yeah, it definitely is. I'll just say it definitely is. So this dress was custom made by Ferragamo, who did the glass zippers for the movie. So it was like kind of a cool little tie in. And it was made for more than 50 chiffon scarves. And it was supposed to have been sent to Drew prior to this when she was in LA so that they could do a fitting. And like, something went wrong and it mistakenly never left Italy.
But luckily she was reunited with it and it fit and it all worked out. But that's crazy to imagine it could have been lost. Yeah, that is crazy. So this is like, literally the internet's favorite dress in the last, like, 2 years. I feel like I see this all the time. Like, it gets posted all the time, and people always, like, engage with it. So she talked about it on a little cute little video on The Drew Barrymore Show's Instagram not too long ago. And she said that wearing it made her feel like part of a fairy tale.
You know, just kind of like that audio we played at the beginning. Totally. She does not know where this dress is this these days. Like, she does not have it and no one seems to know where it is. But God I hope Ferragamo has like archives. In it, I was just going to say somewhere I was just going to say hopefully that like off the like cuff comment of her saying like nobody knows where it is. They're like it's in some collection. But I hope so, because if you remember, there's that girl on Instagram.
I think her. Remade. Handle is Kate Conkers and she remade it and it was a ton of work like so you know what? So much went into making the original and I hope it's safe somewhere. I hope so too. In that same video, she does mistakenly say that she's wearing the shoes from the movie, but they're not those actual shoes. They're a version that Ferragamo made to like, sell. Oh, to sell. Yeah, they sold them and they're, I think it was very limited edition. I think there was like 2000 or something. But I mean, they look similar, but if you look closely, you can see they're much less intricate.
And yeah, yeah, they wouldn't have had her walking in those ones from the movies. Those are in the Disney archives now. Like her necklace is also really pretty like this this like kind of like lavender. Like I said, it's like amethyst maybe like Oval stone is somehow works really well with the dress and that her hair looks beautiful. Her hair is so pretty. It's such a nice. Updo. She doesn't. She didn't do a lot of updos back then and just was like really lovely curled framed around her face. I also like remember getting the in Style magazine that covered this event and it's just like had all beautiful photos of her.
Yeah. And. Styles coverage of events like the best IPRAP Oh my God. The clippings, the. Quality of that paper, paper, paper, yeah, it's just like, ironic because they're owned by. People who has some of the shittiest, shittiest paper All right, so yeah, I'll just say like. One other thing, the lips are great with it like it's another like red lip. It's beautiful. It's like, I just, I love that it's having a renaissance. Yeah, me too. I love that it's still loved. Like in in a way, I look at it and it feels dated, but that's because it feels because I so associate it with this and I would never be able to associate it with anything else.
Like it's so good. OK, so I don't know if this one just surprised you, but when I saw it, I was like, I love this one so much. So in 2006, Drew Drew's look at the Costume Institute Met Gala. It's so beautiful. And I, I, I think when I describe it, it's not going to do it justice because I don't think it actually describes that well. But it's yeah, maybe not, but. She loves this dress as you're going to read. So like I, I love it too. I don't. I guess I'm like, oh, it's the only time she went to the Met Gala and it's pretty simple, like the Met galas where you can go crazy.
But I don't think it was like that back then. I wonder. I was just going to say, I wonder if they were. Doing themes and that kind of like, I don't think it was nearly the. Event that it is. OK, so I'll try to describe the dress. It's it's kind of a form fitting long dress that looks like nude underneath with black lace over. But like the lace is really beautiful and the way it's cut she describes. I think later we'll get into that. But like the lace sort of comes up and like into almost like it's like framing the armpit.
It sounds weird, but it there's no straps, like it's strapless, but it almost it looks like it's like supportive in a weird way. Totally, it's constructed. Beautifully. And then again, like I actually weirdly her. Her hair texture looks very similar to look to 1998, the look we just talked about Yeah, I I really like her hair and makeup with. This she looks stunning and a bright red lip and black heels. I love it so much. Like I saw the dress again. I saw how like stunning her faces and I I mean again, again, how beautiful.
I feel like she feels like, yeah, something about she does. Yeah, like, definitely. She's super. Confident in that I almost. Ended up taking it, taking it off, but not because I didn't love it, because I felt like I didn't have the iconic feel. Yeah, yeah, You know what I mean? Yeah, I. Love it so much. The dress was designed by Oscar de la Renta, so she loved how the design covered her quote pockets of flesh UN quote under her armpits. I so relate to that. Oh, it's. It's such a thing for me. I hate, right?
So Drew said this dress should. Be made more often for women. So many more women would look better and feel better and strapless if you just did the cut of this dress. I've never felt better about myself in my life. And it's a simple placement of fabric. Like it's, it's, that's just like a simple part of the like silhouette of the dress, but it's so flattering and she looks beautiful. I don't know. And like, again, it's an updo. I do, we have like anything with her hair down other than it's like, that's kind of weird.
That is funny. OK. Do we, are we ready to like, even move on to this breathtaking look? I knew this would be on both of our lists. It was. Inevitable, because we both just. Absolutely love this. One So this is Grey Gardens New York premiere from 2009, and this is Drew Liv and her flapper fantasy. I would say, Oh my God, that's putting it mildly. This is this like? Beaded peachy nude gown done by Alberta Ferretti and the styling was done by Lee Harris. So thank you, Lee, so much for finding and choosing.
Oh my God, it's like the most beautiful. Dress like if you haven't seen it, you must see it and like the color I like. You almost think it wouldn't work. Totally works. It's beautiful. It's so beautiful and like the beading on it is like subtle. Like it's almost like the same color. It's like a silvery on this like champagne dress. Like it's just so it's subtle while being like very decorative and feels like you said flappery like very like turn of the century. She's got like perfect finger waves and her blonde hair in the like the shade of her hair in this.
I'm sure you love it. Oh, absolutely perfect. Blonde. And it's like that's a different kind of look for her hair that year. I like her clothes. She was doing all kinds of different hairstyle. This is like the most reserved and classic, I guess, right, right. That's like extreme compared. To like some of the other looks. I just noticed that that piece that's in her hair, that beaded thing almost looks starfish. I was going to say it, it sort of reminds me. Of that starfishy Lily that she wore on her wrist to the Oscars in 99 and then to the Charlie's Angels premiere in 2000.
It does. It reminded me of that too. That's so funny. Well, Speaking of that, Beaded. Flower thing and then she has this face net that like again kind of bold to wear a net covering your face on the red carpet but it's just like seeking subtle enough that it just makes that's what puts it over the top for me as one of her coolest looks ever yeah and it almost like when I think about the net on its. Own I'm like wow weird yeah like if you just take it on its. Own if it if. It if you didn't have something as like decorative as the rest of it, it wouldn't be it would be out shown, you know, like and her makeup and her makeup shakes.
Why does she? Look so good. Like. Everything. Yeah. I mean, do we? Even we don't even see her shoes in these pieces, so I don't remember what her shoes are. I don't know. I'd have to go look at all her other pictures. You might not be able to see if the dress is kind of long, But luckily, she does still have this dress. Thank God. Oh, yeah. It was displayed on the Drew Barrymore Show earlier this season. So I love it. And she said, unfortunately, she went on this, like, very long tangent about how much she loves Lee Harris instead of talking about the dress.
I know. I was like, shit, I wanted more details about this. But she did say that she wanted to have a very period look because she thought it would be very honoring to the Beale family. So that was cool. I mean, what if we can't? I'm done, I'm leaving. I love how you just like lost your. Words right, like we are almost done, but also this being like right in the middle like but it's just like it stands on like a pillar all its own. I agree. It's so beautiful. I guess not only because they. Had three of her gowns on the stage and they had it that they had it all but when Wat was.
One of them it. Was just like, my God, this is so special. It's so cool. And it's like, I almost want to say, like, it's just a premiere. Yeah. You know, like, it's just, it's not the Academy Awards. That's true. I know. And it's the premiere. For a film that she ended up winning awards. For like, you know, you can, I don't know, that's incredible. Very special. All right, I love that you picked this one and. It could have almost made it onto my honorable mentions. I have a reason for not feeling that way, but go on.
OK, so this surprised. Me. But then again, it didn't because I saw it and I went Oh my God, there's like almost nothing like this. Yeah, like, and that's but that's not, I mean, because it feels very red carpet in its boldness. And again, it's just a premiere, guys. So this is the premiere for Whip It at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2009. So there's so many things about it that are like bold. So the look itself. So who made the dress? It's Alexander McQueen. It's called the tattoo dress and it's yellow and black, like bright yellow and black.
How do I I mean, the dress is like it's got a lace over the whole thing, but it's like very intricate lace that's in this like stunning pattern. It's almost it always like almost gives me. Like a cool insect. Look. Is that weird? Yes. OK, no, that's not weird. I was almost going to. Say, like, is it a cicada? Yeah, I don't, I don't have like a picture of the front, but it almost looks like actually there's an artist I love that goes by strange dirt and it looks like something that she would do like.
So the other thing that's cool is like the the straps, there's no straps on the dress. Like actually like the the top of it is just the lace. I really. Thought about that. You're right, like so. That's what they call it, the tattoo, I think. Because it looks like it's just her skin with like black lines. So that alone is like whoa. Like it's a whoa would be too much I think on a lot of people like it's but Oh my God. And then the hair. So you mentioned how different her hair gets throughout 2009.
So we're still in the crazy 2009. It's her black dipped blonde. So like it completes the look for me. It matches the dress, really. Right. Like if she didn't have. That I don't think I would maybe love it as much. Like it's about the entire thing. Like even though like high heels, like how high they are, it just feels like just right. I can see that her nails are like, I love the nails. They're like turquoisey blue. I love the shoes and I love the the black tips for her hair. But yeah, there's something about the like, messiness that.
Yeah, that bothers you. Yes, because I. Loved it when she was doing some of the. Other promo for Whip It when she first came out with that hair, I love her look for that, but it's like a little too messy for me and that's like the one thing that kept it off my list that's sort of funny. I'm. Wondering like. Because I agree it looks a little bit like wispy, like something's going on. OK, so we have a quote from Drew talking about the blonde hair with the black tips. And she said Tracy Cunningham and I dyed my hair white blonde, cut it at the shoulders, used a ruler, put black dye on the ruler and put Vaseline in the hair to the edge of the ruler so the color wouldn't bleed up.
All of it sounds very common, like. I love. I I think it's, I remember like thinking she's like looks punk rock that year. So perfect for whipping right? For like. The film and everything and then. This was like fun to be the premier of the Toronto Film Festival, like to look punk rock, but then like be Cinderella. Like there's something very beautiful about it. So like her, her look is like there's like a very like not a nude lip, but like a really light pink lip. So didn't need to do a lot with this look.
Definitely. And then it and it looks like I can't really tell, but like maybe the eyes are like a black eyeliner like with cat. It's definitely heavier eyeliner than she. Normally wears right so it surprised me, but then. Again, like it just it almost like a gasp in a different way than the flapper. Now I think you know her to put like. Her most amazing gowns she ever wore. This would make the list for sure, right? So it's a great choice, right? And I think that she it doesn't over like. Over shadow her, yeah, Which I think is like says a lot about her.
I don't know. Her light shining through it can't. Be can't be dampened. All right. Is this our last one? I think this is our last one, right? I it is right. Yeah, your look. Closes us out. OK, so this was my last choice. And this is the beautiful look at the Golden Globes in 2010. The year drew one for Grey Gardens and the dress was made for her by Versace. Again, thanks stylist Lee Harris. And it is again a nude color, which nude is not my jam. So it's so funny that I picked two of them two nudes.
I just realized what I was like. Wait, I was thinking. Earlier I'm like there's another new dress somewhere. It's like this is like a nude with like sparkles all. Over it and underneath it's very sheer and underneath it's there's a corset. So she like loved that structure. And there's what she calls these sea anemones. 1 is on her hip and 1 is on her shoulder. And even Drew herself said, like, at first it didn't make a lot of sense. They're like they're very almost sequin, I think, or kind of crystal like.
And they're so cool that they like put the dress up the top for me because of these little sea anemones that are attached there. Drew herself has called this her favorite dress that she's ever gotten to wear in her life. So this goes in the in the exhibit. Of her best. Gowns. Ever. And then another quote from her, she said, I love this look so much. It's the ultimate red carpet moment of my life. Everything about this beauty look was about not trying. This is me pared down and effortless. Drew being Drew.
And I love this lip, which is pink with just a touch of Berry in it. So she wanted to feel like herself. And she also, of course, looks so glamorous. And it's like, that was her first really big acting award, if you don't count the Youth in Film Awards from ET, right? So this has a lot going for it. Like memorable moment in her life. The look is gorgeous. Like I I think it was like, oh, that's a odd choice, like the placement, but then it like looks incredible, like so cool. It's like the dress is like a piece.
Of art. Like yeah, it. Really. Actually both of these last couple. Like these actually. These last three, I totally agree. All of them, no. OK. OK. The last several are like pieces of art and like and her wearing them is something that like is, so it honors her in a lovely way. I also love she's that huge. Like what looks like a globe ring on her finger. Like she matches the Golden Globe Award very nicely. She does, actually, when you look at it like her hair is kind of. Golden. And it's got like a golden top.
Like there's something of her. OK, this this is I'm so glad this is on our list because like, Speaking of her looking like proud and lovely and like, there's something about like the look on her face on the red carpet and she knew she was going to win.
Yeah, it's a great one. And like, it is so funny. I don't think of like nude as being like a color of dress that I would ever like choose for myself or like. Think of if I was like. The top red look like red carpet looks like not realizing they're but that's maybe that's one reason why like they're both both this and the flapper dress are like highly detailed dresses. Yeah, very, very, but also subtle, like somehow. Yeah, like you, the more you look at it, the more. You appreciate it? Yeah. We're just going to sit here sighing for the rest of the.
