117 – Charlie’s Angels (2000): Drew Barrymore’s Fierce, Fun, and Totally 2000s Action Film - How Do You Drew

It's kind of wild that we waited, but also it felt really daunting, right?

And when when you were going through this process, did it feel daunting? You know, it's funny, I'm going to mention it a little bit later on. There's a way that Drew kind of describes flower films taking it on. And I was like relatable because I was like, this is going to be a lot. And it it's a lot. Like there's no way we're going to get to everything. There's. Yeah, just so much we could delve into. There's so many tidbits. There's so much to talk about. Even just talking about the movie, like there's so many costumes that it's like, Oh yeah, another scene, another scene, another scene we have to talk about.

All right, so let's get into it. We're just going to kind of get the, what do you call it, like the big stuff out of the. Business. The business, The business, all right. This film was directed by Mick G The Lovely McGee. It was written by Ryan Rowe and Ed Solomon and John August and many, many others. We'll talk about that, yes. It was produced by Leonard Goldberg, Drew Barrymore and Nancy Juvonen. And do you want to talk about why? We're here yes. So this movie was released on November 3rd in the year 2000 and this is 2000.

I was hoping you did that. This is the 25 year anniversary. That's insane and happy. 25 years, half a freaking quarter of a century. What is even happening right now? This movie just came out. Recent This recent film from the year 2000. Yeah, I feel like I because it's so close to my birthday, I remember like, being excited and almost felt like a gift, like, you know, when this was coming out. Let's talk about that. Like, I mean, this is I think we have the shared experience of this being sort of the first production that Drew did as an actress or producer that we really followed from.

The start. Yes. Like, we knew when it was announced. We knew when they started filming, we saw the paparazzi photos. We got all these little, like, casting info, like every step of the way, our little Grapevine Druby crew was like watching the news on it and sharing it with each other. So this was, I mean, not only is it just a huge movie in so many ways, but it was huge for us to like, yeah, an event. You were like, so like tightly knit connected that message board and this really was like kind of like maybe the height was kind of like right in this range, right?

Totally. What do you remember about seeing it with it being sort of a birthday gift to? You, you know what? I I sadly don't remember seeing it vividly. Like I don't remember the experience in the theater. I know I've loved it every time I've watched it, but I don't have any recollection of like the first time. I just know I was excited. I think I even got like the movie poster before I saw the movie. Totally. Me too. And it was like I the shiny one that had, like, silver foil all around. Yeah. Yeah.

I was in college. And my friends, Jenny and Claire, we literally took a bus to get to the movie theater. Jenny had been like, also like kind of following all of the, like, news and stuff. And she, like, brought me all the stuff back from London where she lived because it was always, you know, it was in all the magazines. We're going to talk about that, too. But yeah, so it was really exciting and I freaking loved it. Like how do you not watch this movie and just have a blast, right? Yeah. I mean, it's, it's not supposed to be serious.

It's you're supposed to come out of it a little bit like. OK, yeah, that was fun. What? I didn't pull it. We had a quote a couple episodes ago about something funny that Drew said about it. Now I don't remember like the source of it, but it was something like you want to come out of it and like make out with your girlfriend or like go have fun with your friends. Like that's how she wanted people to come out of the. Movie you're like amped up totally, yes, amped up. So yeah, we we are very nostalgic about this film.

As you can see. This is like, you know, it just marks this certain point like how old was I? I had I was about to turn 16. When I was 18, yeah. Yeah, it's. Crazy. So wild. All right, should we read our favorite IMDb summary? Yeah, go for it. All right, three private investigators are assigned to track down a kidnapped software engineer, but the case isn't always as straightforward as it seems. Very vague. That's all it is. 3 private investigators. No, like hijinks, disguises, adventure, fights, like none of that stuff.

That's, I mean, I guess that's the plot. I guess that's the it's like. Funny, it's kind of giving away. There's a twist with this kidnapping. It's. Do they always refer to the chart like the angels as private investigators? I was. Wondering that too, because at one point I was like, oh, they're spies. And then there's another point where I think Knox says you're detective. And so, yeah, I don't know, maybe it's like a very, you know, the angels are the angels and that's all you need to know. Yeah.

I'd never really thought about like, yeah, what category do they fit in? I just. Yeah, like, you come to them if you have a very specific and, like, need that requires a lot of knowledge and our skills. Yeah. All right, Let's get into the making of the film. So there's a lot that went into this. Obviously there's a lot of history because it's Charlie's Angels, so it's based on the popular 1970s Aaron Spelling, Leonard Goldberg television show. If you're not aware of that for some reason, Drew said about the TV show.

I loved it. I collected Matchbox cars and Tonka trucks, and it was The One Show where I saw women driving really cool sports cars. That's fun. That's really fun. She also said, I always just remember that there was nothing I didn't like about any of them. I loved all three of them so much. And I, I didn't note it here, but I do remember Drew saying that like at one point they wanted the original angels to cameo. It was never able to like be figured out, but I think she said her envision or her vision was that the current angels and the former angels would like pass each other like.

Like passing the torch. Like an escalator or something. And that was sort of what she ended up doing with the scissor video, just walking by her and being like, oh. So she was comparing those. Yeah. Yeah. That's cool. That is cool. OK, so let's get back to the making up. So when Nancy Javonin learned that Sony and Columbia were making a film version in 1998, she immediately knew that she and Drew just needed to get on top of it. Like, this was the project. She, like, felt it. They were passionate about it from the start.

They pitched it using a videotape montage that Drew had compiled of film of, like, clips from other movies. So she basically made like, a reel using clips from Lost in America, The Jerk, the Red Balloon and Raging Bull. And it was to like, explain, like, this is what the tone that I'm going for is. I was thinking that it reminds me of the fact that like when she did whip it, we know that she had like a wall of like inspiration. Yes, I was thinking the exact same thing. Yep. She's very into like mood boards or mood videotapes, I guess.

Right. It like I, I had this like, oh, it'd be so cool to see that knowing she curated it. Yeah. Really cool to like get into Drew's brain and think about that stuff. So it was announced in February 1999 that Drew and Flower Films were officially attached to the project, and I'm sure we found out about it right away. Right. I was going to say like February 99 like that. Yeah. It's like it was such a. Peak time. Right. So this is what I was referring to earlier. So Drew said quote. I feel like Step 1 was producing Never Been kissed.

We kind of skipped steps 2-3 and four and went straight to five. I don't think we had any idea how intense it would be. And yeah, preparing for this episode felt a little like that. I was just like, and I was trying to, like, do it in a short amount of time. Should have, should have done it earlier. And it was just like, oh, my God. Like, I was literally telling you, I was in yoga yesterday trying to be present on the mat. And instead I'm like thinking about all these different notes I wanted to add.

Literally, like text about Drew flying at you while you're closing your eyes, trying to zone everything out just for an hour, please. All right. So anyway, you just, we just love it so much that you can stop thinking about it. So Drew and Nancy, like, really, really like, went to bat for Mick G, who was a music video director. Can I ask you real quick? Yeah. Were you familiar with him before this? I knew the videos and I don't know that I had noticed that director over and over again, OK. I was like an Uber nerd about music videos in the 90s and like, this will probably come as a great shock to you, but all the ones I recorded, I also made notes of who the music video director was.

So I would pay attention to like the repeating person and what their style was. So I recognize not only McGee because I knew his name. It's very unique and he'd done like Sugar Ray and Sublime and stuff, but his style was very like saturated colors. And like there's parts in this movie where I'm like, oh, that's exactly what he kind of has in one of his music videos. And right. So I like I remember being like cool, like this will look great. Yeah, and I think I, I can't, I don't know if I was aware, but also this is like a time when my musical taste was like changing also.

So I might not have been watching MTV or if I was, I don't know. Anyway, so this film was Mcgee's feature film debut. So basically at that point he was known as this music video director and he gave them a super enthusiastic pitch for his vision. So he set the stage here. So here's a quote. One thing about Mick G when he did his presentation to us was that he was ready to act it all out to us, scene by scene, shot by shot. It felt like a historical moment in my life. His presentation itself was worth doing.

The movie. He is full of passion, enthusiasm, optimism and energy that his belief in US made us work harder and be better at our jobs. I do know that there's a part in the DVD special features where Bill Murray is kind of making fun of McGee. Like he says, like if you put 1/4 in him, he'll do the entire movie and like, but that's so cool. He really like. Got into it. He was like, this is what it's going to be. Yeah. I also always really loved the way that he describes his vision in this little clip about the storybook pages.

Each scene, you know, had its own signature. I wanted it to feel like a gigantic storybook where you were turning pages. You remember the scene at the racetrack, You remember Camerons dream, you remember Lucy inside of a Chrome Airstream trailer, the Swiss Miss Yodeler scene. You would never confound this page with the current page with the page that's about to follow. I love. That the storybook part. I mean, that kind of is what I was saying earlier. Like there's so many costumes. There's so many like different things that you can't describe without saying, like what their disguise is, basically.

I love that exactly. Everyone in the cast and crew raved about that enthusiasm and joy and energy that he brought. He'd applaud after like every single scene throughout filming. Like enthusiasm to the Max. Like, absolutely. Absolutely, and this is a cute other little clip of Drew just discussion about McGee. I have a love and a loyalty towards this man because I continued without doubt to trust his instincts. I love that and I know that we know that there was quite an affection like they she like because she had gone to bat for him like I don't know.

I also think it's interesting that flower films frequently had these like instincts about people like I think about Richard Kelly with Donnie Darko also first time director also got pushed back from, you know, whoever the financers, studios, whatever like and they were like, no, like this is this is the guy, he has the vision, we're going with him and it's very, very similar in that way. It's. So cool, right? I really like that. Should we get into our little encounters with McGee briefly just. Briefly, we've been lucky enough to meet him three times, which is hilarious.

OK, so I'm remembering 2 and why don't I remember the third? So let me what I think is the first was on the set of Full throttle. Yeah. OK, so we weren't well, OK guys, the set this day was Hollywood Blvd. And it's, yeah, it wasn't like a closed private set. He just was like. Walking down the street and we were like Big G and he's like stopped and talked to us and we took a picture with him and it was like, here he is directing this gigantic movie on Hollywood Blvd. and there's like no one around him.

It was crazy. And then the second time we met him I believe would have been when we just happened to go see Confessions of a Dangerous Mind on an opening day in a movie theater and he was like 2 seats behind us and we got to talk to him after. And it was like almost empty, wasn't it? I feel like it was like us and him and like a few other people. And it like, maybe it was like a matinee, like I remember it was. Yeah, it might have been. Was it New Year's Day? Yeah, it was something weird like that.

Right, if like everything about it felt like very specific and. It was just like, holy shit, Mcgee's behind us and he's so nice. And then the last time, what you're probably not remembering is that we went and saw him at the Arclight for one of those master storytellers Q&A's for Charlie's Angels. And we also took a picture with him after that. Whoa, I am completely blanking on this. Yeah, I. Don't remember that one as well either. If there wasn't a photo I'd probably forget it even happened, which is crazy.

Where was it? The Arclight. RIP. Same place where we saw Kevin Williamson do scream and then drew a Nancy for 51st states, of course. So I remember those. Why don't you? Remember. Things anyway. We did too many cool things back in the day. Guys. Remember. Remember that. I mean. Do you remember we met Cameron Diaz? Cuz I always forget that and I just saw her name and I was like oh God we met her too. That's. Right. Weird life when you're around LA a lot. Things like this just happened. It's just encounters with people who are, you know, it's like, whatever, it's their town.

OK, So Drew convinced Cameron Diaz to sign on, even without a complete script. So here's a quote. It says Cameron is effervescent, optimistic and has a great strength and stability in her. She is one of the most real people I have met in my life. I've always wanted to work with her. I thought it would be great to do something fun together. And this is an opportunity that's different from a lot of films because of the various aspects. So cool. And there's like, all these fun stories about how, of course we know the magic of Drew picking up the phone and calling somebody for something.

It like, happens so often, like, right. And so charming. Yes. Cameron has said, like, they talked for so long that, like, her cell phone was like, burning up her face and the battery died because they just started, like, getting all these ideas and getting so excited about what this could be. So cool, I love it so much. So Drew and Cameron spent the next few months, like in story meetings, trying to figure out their characters. And then more importantly, they started this intense training for the martial arts and wire stunts in the film.

And I found out that it was in the, what was at the time, the LA Park Plaza Hotel's basketball court, which is, like, such a fun little snippet. I was like, I have to write that down somewhere. We can't forget that. It's now called the MacArthur I. Love that. I know I even found pictures of it. I was like, that's so cool. I love that. I love these little things. We just live for this kid biz. More give them to us. All right, so we remember this. Vividly. So rumors went on for like so long about who the third Angel would be.

Some actresses mentioned included Angelina Jolie, Sandy Newton, Jennifer Lopez, Penélope Cruz and Jetta Pinkett Smith. You made a note here that Sandy Newton has said, like, I think outright, that Amy Pascal was kind of racist. To. Her about this opportunity. Yeah. Which is crazy because like by looking at these names, with the exception of Angelina, like they're clearly we're going for like a minority for the third role and having diversity, which is great. But yeah, it didn't. The things that Sandy said is like cringe.

Oh, Amy Pascal, I always think for crazy hair at Drew's star ceremony. Oh yeah, I could picture. It I pictured a picture that I took other Others who were known to have auditioned include Nia Long and Regina Hall and those are just like what people we found out like they. Both had mentioned on on Drew's show, yeah, which is really cool. But of course, when Lucy Liu came in, there was just immediate chemistry. They all knew she was the one. A quote from Lucy is, I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at a reading.

I forgot about the job for a minute. It was more about finding friends. I was hoping I could get to know better. I know. And then Cameron also said we all have the same sense of humor. We all have that same twistedness about us. So they just, like, clicked. And it's cool because Lucy brings a very different energy than Drew and Cameron do, which is perfect. That's what you want. But like, yeah, there was something that they all connected and like had the same about that. Like filled some gap like it feels like a like circle or something.

I wonder when they started calling each other poo. Yeah, I don't know, Probably right away I could see that. That's like definitely a pet name. That continues. All right, so now let's talk about the cast, cuz there's a pretty amazing cast. It's kind of crazy, like we can't, can we even mention everyone? I don't know, there's so many like fun little cameos and pop. Yeah, at one point, like while I was watching the film, I was like. It was like this person followed by this person quickly. I feel like it was like Bill Murray and then Tim Curry.

Tim Curry, right. It was like them back-to-back. And I was like, oh, cool. All right, so let's let's let's talk about the Angels first. So Drew, as Dylan Drew said of her character, Dylan, Dylan was the wild one who had been born into reform school. She was the Wendy O of the angels, completely badass. Like she's a Hesher. An absolute rock'n'roll reform schoolgirl Hesher. Love it. I also think it's funny that she had described herself in rehab as like Wendy O, like trying to get everybody riled up.

Yeah, so I, I just wanted to like, explain, because I don't think I knew this outright, so I don't know if other people do. So Wendy O was a famous like singer of a punk band called The Plasmatics and I pulled a quote. It says that she was noted for her on stage theatrics, which included partial nudity, exploding equipment, firing a shotgun and chainsaw, and guitars. Yeah, that's so Dylan vibes, right? So it's kind of cool, you know, and when, even when they will get into it, but when they show her at the very beginning, like she's totally a header.

Totally. Totally. Yeah, Another thing that Drew said was that after playing so many good girl roles, she really wanted to play someone who had a fucking drink, love to have a kind of wild night, and also just had balls of steel, would jump off a fucking 50 foot building and not question that she wasn't going to make it OK. Because it wasn't about making it OK. That was a given. I wanted to play a little bit of a badass. I wanted to play someone who was unashamed and was in touch with her sexuality and in touch with her bravery.

And yeah, I would imagine going off of Josie Grossie, this is like such a change. I absolutely love it, Although there are some Josie mannerisms that I'm going to note. Yeah, I'm excited to hear like, of course it's like it's true, it's still true. But I was, I'll say really quickly because like she definitely like got into that role. Like even when you see her, like there's one point when they're sitting in the agency, they're like sitting on the couch. And the way Drew's sitting like she looks like a.

Badass. Like kind of slumped down. I know. Exactly. And she like has like one of her legs up or something. But like, it's very there's something very like confident about just the way she's sitting that gives off this vibe. So totally. So. OK, so we mentioned Cameron Diaz as she plays Natalie. She's kind of described as a California girl next door. Goofy but genius. And then Lucy Leo is Alex and she's like the high class, sort of born with a silver spoon Angel. And it's just such a great, like great combination.

Like to go from, hey, we don't really have a script. We don't know who these characters are. Like I feel like they really did great, like nailing it all down. Yeah, exactly. So. And then we mentioned Bill Murray. Bill Murray as Bosley. It was apparently pretty hard to get him to sign on. He even did the Oh yeah, we I forgot. We, I think we talked about this when we did the SNL. Yeah, when they were trying to get him, Drew attended the SNL 25th anniversary special and he was hosting it, and he came up to her in the audience and started singing Don't Go Chasing Waterfalls.

And it was very much like, you know, I I even finally found like, the source of that information. And even Nancy was like, yeah, we were trying to figure out for a while what he was trying to tell us with that, but he eventually relented. So I'm like, get over for yourself, Bill. Yeah, yeah. All right. Sam Rockwell, who we love, he plays. Eric too. Yes, we have. Weird, didn't we like like conjure him? Yeah, that's a better way to put it. We conjured him out of the ether on on Sunset Blvd. We're like, we'd love to meet Sam Rockwell.

And like 5 minutes later he pulled up in a car and ran into a store in front of us. So weird guys. So weird. Weird. So anyway, Sam Rockwell, he's Eric Knox, MC G, and Sam wanted the quote UN quote good version of the character to be really like warm and fuzzy and with like messed up hair or like Spike Jones or Beck totally comes off. When I read this, I was like totally. Yep. And then he and Drew. Sam and Drew would soon play Love Interest again and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. And later they played siblings and everybody's fine.

Anyway, we love Sam Rockwell. Yes. You met him again. Yeah, yeah, because we didn't actually talk to him that time. It happened so fast and it was so fucking like, what? How? How? Like he clearly was like, right? I think he must have like it was book. Soup. It was book soup. He ran in I. Think he must have like ran out and then like gotten it and left like or something like it was, it was yeah, it was like less than a minute. I don't know. It was so fast so. I got another chance and I was like I am not missing this opportunity again and I like fully stopped him in like a food court of the palms and got a really cute picture.

We're going to have a lot of cool pictures of us with people to put in this one. That's fun. Kelly Lynch is Vivian Wood Knox's business partner and you know, she also turns out to be bad guy. And then Crispin Glover is the creepy thin man and I thought this was fun. Mick G said that Crispin this is so like, Yep, what exactly what you think Crispin would do? Gave him 3 pages on the psychology of the character and that everything all the way down to the way he held a cigarette was completely planned out by him.

I mean, Speaking of cigarettes, like when he smokes and walks like his smoke like whooshes behind him and it looks really cool. And I was like, I bet that was him completely like doing that. Totally. For somebody who has no dialogue in this entire movie, he makes such an impression. It's like, wow, it's really cool. He only, like, screams, Yeah. He does scream. You're right. All right, so then we have Matt LeBlanc as Jason. He plays Alex's love interest, which is Lucy Liu. And if you don't know about his bangs in this movie, you're in for a treat.

All right, so then we've got Tom Green as the Chad. He's one of Dylan's love interests. Drew was a fan of his TV show and on MTV and kind of had a crush on him and wanted him in the movie. So she charmed him, right? It worked. There she goes again. And she charmed him so much that they ended up getting married. Eventually they started dating during filming and then they were married in 2001 so. Crazy and his whole like testicular cancer went on during filming of this like. Wow, I didn't realize it was kind of the same.

It was exactly the same timeline. Same exact time. Yeah, I know. It's a lot. She had a lot going on at this time. It's crazy. She like made her way out of this year. We also have to mention Luke Wilson as Pete. He becomes Natalie love interest and you know interestingly enough he was Drews most recent ex at this time. And sometimes I wonder, like, how did she feel watching her best friend flirt with her ex? Like, right, you know, on camera for, for the movie. But still, it's like, I would love to know.

I, I don't think we've ever found out like how he ended up in the movie, why they asked him to do it because he's so cute and charming. I don't know. What When was the last appearance where they were seen together? It was like right at the time she was training for Charlie's Angels, it was like the end of 1999, right when like the those pictures of her changing in the parking lot to jog was because she was training for the movie. Oh, that makes sense. Yeah. So maybe, maybe it's the thing where he had the part because they were together and then they split up and then all of a sudden she's dating Tom.

I don't know. It's wild. But like at the part as not her love interest is someone else's so it's kind of interesting. I mean, either way, he's great in it. I love him in this movie. He's so sweet. So then I we mentioned Tim Curry earlier. He plays Rodger Corwin, the owner of Knox's rival company Red Star. It's like, yes, villain, but not the villain. He's like, it turns out, but he. Doesn't He's not really the bad guy. I think we we think he is, and then it turns out he's not. He's so it's like.

Shmarmy in this movie. Yeah, he is. It's perfect, though. He does. He does a great job. And then John Forsythe is returning as the original voice of Charlie from the TV series, which is so cool. I would love to forgot that. Like, that's so rad, he said. I did a special with Drew when she was 10 and I said we've got to act together when you grow up. No. It's so sweet. It is sweet, especially when you think about like how Dylan is sort of like the one who's like. Doesn't have a family. Sees Charlie, but also, like, the novelization really hammers home, like, her wanting to see Charlie.

Like, in every phone call, she goes, Charlie, can you join us? Like, it's kind of goofy, but I wonder if, like, that was in the script where it was more like, she's always searching for that. Interesting. Yeah. So we have some of our Drew regulars on the crew. So the makeup supervisor was Kim Green, and the hair supervisor was Barbara Olvera. And they frequently work together with Drew for years and years and years on a lot of her stuff. We were lucky enough to interview Kim on our episode 20, and she told us that she always loved working with Drew and Nancy and Flower because there were always days of makeup planning and tests.

And she absolutely loved doing like all of Dylan's disguises. So go listen that episode if you want a little more, we have those amazing Polaroids that she shared once online that like have totally made their way all over the Internet, but it's like 8 different Drew Polaroids on the set of the movie. And Oh my God, Kim, if you ever want to give this to us, please do. Please. Oh, the Jerusalem would be the place for them, we should tell her. That but her makeup in this movie is so beautiful like there's a lot of really bold colorful choices with the lips and the eyeshadow, but it just totally works I. Every single one works.

Everything works. On why is she so beautiful in this movie? I don't know. I think I think she just is very beautiful and this is like so and this is showcasing it. I think it's like big time purposely showcasing their. Beauty and power. The angels are elevated, right? Right, right. So everything is elevated, including their beauty. Yeah, and of course her red hair, like I, I think that was such a cool choice for her to do. Like I still to this day will never get over her not doing it. Red for the sequel anyway.

And like she loves redheads. She's always talked about how redheads are like the hottest thing in the world. So I just, I think that was a brilliant choice and I'm sure that was her decision. Yeah, I'm sure. All right, so then the casting was done by Justine Baddeley and Kim Davis Wagner. Justine was friends with Drew since she was like 13. They lived together for a while in the 90s and then Kim Davis is Tamara Davis's sister and they did casting for a lot of Flower Films productions. As a team, I feel like they worked as a team.

Yeah, they always work together. Yeah, they still do. Oh, that's so cool. And then Drew's assistant credited. Is that Chris Miller, who we love and. Wait, we've met him too, thank God. We probably have gushed about Chris Miller many times, but like we love Chris Miller. He became our go to guy for such a long time. He is now the show runner for this Tonight Show like. He we owe him. A lot, yeah. Yeah, He, he gave us. I feel like he, he definitely is the reason that we were able to do what we're able to do.

Yeah, he like opened the door to give us what Drew says. What did what did she say we have? Direct access. Direct access to her. That all started with Chris. We don't, by the way. That's very nice of her to say, but it'll be more about Chris a little bit later on. OK, the costume designer, we have to give credit to this guy because hello, this movie costumes amazing. It's Joseph G Alesi, and I think this is cool. He thought it was very important to give each Angel their own signature style and I just pulled this little quote that he had about Drew's character because that's who we are here for, he said.

As for Drew Barrymore's fun reformed rebel character Dylan, Elisi said he incorporated the actresses real life neo flower power fondness for vintage clothes into the wardrobe. He believes Barrymore's best attributes are her shoulders and neckline. So he put her in clothes with deep plunging necklines. And that made me realize, like when I read it, because I always think Dylan, I always think like rock'n'roll look, but she actually in the first movie is more like bohemian. She's wearing a lot of like these kind of flowy covers like I chose to wore today, like she doesn't really have with the exception of the rock band, which is a disguise and like her flashback.

To her. You know, high school bathroom or whatever. Like, she doesn't really dress like that. That's true. It's. Kind of interesting, another cool thing about Joseph is that he did her dress for the 2000 Oscars, which the angels all went to, and we'll mention that later on. But this is the one with the plunging back, which is so cool. And I know we've mentioned this before, but she specifically said that dress was lost in her house fire, so I know I hate it. At least we have a million pictures it right.

It's true. The Oscars like they take. I don't know. I want her to go back to the Oscars. Yeah, me too. Go ahead. All right, so many of the costume pieces for Charlie's Angels were created by John David Ridge. And it turns out he designed Drew's wedding dress for her marriage to Tom Green in 2001. So it's kind of cool that she like had them make personal. Clothes for her. Found that out. I was so pumped to like, get that piece of information. We have a whole episode on Drew's weddings and we didn't know anything about that dress.

In fact, there's no good photos of that dress. It's very hard to see the details of it. But when I found that out, it was like just so cool to learn that. And we ended up contacting like a university that has his collection in their archives and they sent us like some of the documents from when he was designing the dress. And it's just like so neat. I love it. It was so cool. All right, so the martial arts we mentioned that Drew was training like as soon as they basically decided they were doing the movie, they were training Chen Yan Yun.

I don't know how to say that. AKA the Master. I love this guy. He didn't he do the matrix. Yeah, he did the Matrix, which is very like you can see the the inspiration in there I think in some of the scenes, right? Yes, absolutely. Right. So they trained with like they did real training. Real. I mean, there is a great video on YouTube that we'll link to that. It's from the DVD, but it shows like what they went through and it's really, I'm gonna mention this again later on when we go through the movie.

But it's really like satisfying to see like them trying to get moves down and like looking kind of sloppy to what ends up, you know, happening when we see it on screen. It's just so cool. And they had a lot of respect for this guy. It sounds like the master. He was making them as powerful as they needed to be, right? Yeah, and here's just a little quick clip from Drew talking about the training process. Your knuckles would be broken with bloody vessels and you just thought, yeah, that's so. Hot you.

Sweat you bond. You learn things that you never thought that you could. Do it's just so cool, like Drew not ever thinking of herself as that athletic right to see the things that she was able to do after this training. I'm just so proud. Every time I watch it I'm like. Look at her go. So cool. It's so cool. I mean, this was a cool movie, you know, like it's that's The thing is it's like fun. It's cool. She got to be cool and do cool things like anyways, so cool. So we mentioned earlier that there were many writers that worked on this.

So famously there were like many writers and a lot of rewrites and. Like day of filming I think they were like here's some new pages. I love this screen cap you put in here where it's like the different versions and their dates. So it's like blue version, pink version, yellow version, and it's like days apart. Yeah, and then it starts getting real random salmon cherry. Guys, there's like 10 different versions on just the screenshot. There probably were more. There's probably more. Right. OK, so we know that an early version of the script had something to do with supermodels being cloned.

And Drew and Nancy were like, like, they ditched that immediately. And the writer John August recalls he had an early meeting with Drew about the screenplay where she really emphasized that she wanted the angels to be confident on the job and giant dorks off the job, which is so fun, That's so good. That's so Drew, too. Yeah, it really. Really. That's totally her, huh? Yeah, I do want to say like. So like I said, I read the novelization because sometimes you can get little snippets of things that were cut out of the movie when you do that.

So it's kind of fun. But it really drove home the fact to me that like the script is pretty like when you're just reading it and you don't have like the imagery and the music and like the all the charisma from the performances and just all of the things Mick G brought to it. It's like, wait, what's going on? Wait, huh. But that's not what we're here for, so it doesn't matter. Right. I mean, there's a very general conflict that resolves like that's that's it. Yeah. That's all we really. Don't worry about those weird details about the satellites and.

Right. Things that don't make sense at all. Drew had a very clear stance that she didn't want the Angels to have guns. And I feel like this was like in a lot of the like media about it, it was like they are using their hands, like they are doing martial arts, like we've said. So filming started on January 10th, 2000 and, and it approximately in May. And one of the cool things that we kind of had mentioned this before was that we would get to see a lot of paparazzi photos, which like, you know, paparazzi, we're not always here for it, but we got to see like a lot of onset pictures whenever they were filming like out in public.

So we there's some really fun pictures from all the different scenes. I love the one of her and Tom of course she's got that the messed up hair from the in the makeup from the beginning of the movie, yes. I for some reason really remember the ones of her in the water. And it's probably because it was like printed in People magazine or something, right? Yeah, it's. Like a two page spread or something crazy like. That and they're so of course she looks beautiful, of course. OK, so despite rumors to the contrary, the actresses got along really well and became lifelong friends.

I mentioned earlier I was trying to figure out when they started calling each other poo and I feel like every time, like Drew and Cameron do anything, even publicly, they are calling each other poo. Like it's so cute. Totally. Drew said. It's like I finally know what it's like to have sisters. It's like I finally get it. Oh, that's so cute. Yeah. I mean, and it's so obvious. I was kind of laughing because I don't know how much you were paying attention during the The Wicked promotional tour, but like, Cynthia Rivo and Ariana Grande got like so much shit for how they were constantly like, holding hands and touching each other and loved each other so much.

And I was like, the angels kind of did that first, actually. They did. And I'm sure there was like, I'm sure there were people talking shit. We were just all. About it, don't you remember the SNL Weekend Update skit where they had like versions of the Angels that came out and they kept touching each other's hair and like, showing their butts And Jimmy Fallon is like, we'll have to link to it. I think it's on YouTube. Remember. It's so good, it's so good. Funny, one of the rumors about an onset issue was actually true, and it was an argument between Bill Murray and Lucy Liu over how the first Townsend Agency scene was was going to go.

MC G explained that it was a passionate conversation reminiscent of a Sunday night dinner table, and Nancy Javonen said that Bill Murray came into the direction kind of late with all kinds of ideas of how to save it. Lucy Liu didn't agree with some of those ideas and told him rather forcefully, and they argued. So there was something. Yeah, and it's crazy, like how much that story was printed at the time. So like, it obviously leaked at the time, got printed everywhere. There were a lot of people talking about it, and it still comes up.

Like Lucy just had to address it in the last few years. And it's like, there's really not that much to tell there. Like he was kind of shitty with her because she was like ATV actress and like, who? Who are you? And she stood up for herself and everyone walked away and came back and it was fine. Like, right, shit happens. This probably happens all the time on every movie set. True. But also good for Lucy. I like her balls there. Me too. So one last thing about the production is at the very end, Drew threw a huge wrap party at her house.

This was the house on Cherokee that ended up burning down. Supposedly it was the best party that anyone had ever been to. And in Premiere magazine, it said 1000 people showed up at Barrymore's house where there were canvases and paints laid out, four bars and a game room with air hockey. The actress also set up a room where old episodes of Charlie's Angels played continuously. Can totally picture it. That's so. Cool, so fun. I love that so much. I want. To go to a Drew party. Me too. The movie y'all Charlie's Angels. I can't believe we just talked for like an hour and we haven't even started the movie. Oh my God. Well, there's a lot. There's a lot about this production. There's a lot. All right, now let's just have fun. Let's have fun, and we're going to come out wanting to what does it make out with our girlfriends? Yeah, yeah, yeah, of course. All right, so let's just jump right in. Let's jump into the Columbia logo clouds. I love that like beginning like immediately, you know, oh, this is something different.

Like you don't normally have the logo and then you go into the clouds of it. And if now you're in an airplane, like such a great idea. They do this really long extended what looks like a one shot. It's actually three. They like point out in the commentary where they are, where the cuts are. But I love one shots. I'm such a sucker for them. I mean, they're, they're so cool. Yeah, they're just cuz it's just, you know, so much is going on behind the scenes to make it happen and like, everybody has to hit their marks, right?

It's just so fun. And I did want to point out that the very beginning opening song is Blind by Korn, and Mick G had directed that music video. So that's kind of fun.

So then the master, Chen Yan Yun, I hope I'm saying that right The he has a cameo as a plane passenger. And then we have Sean Whalen, who was Drew's assistant and never been kissed, playing a terrorist, which is crazy. And there was a random nun planted in the plane. That was apparently Nancy's suggestion. Like she thought a nun in first class was really fun. I like it. OK, so basically you guys know what happens? We have LO Cool J on the plane and he's got to get this bomb off the plane and then they skydive.

It's like so action-packed right at the beginning. Like I love it. Like, yeah, right, right off the bat. Yeah, the actions really starts immediately. They're like jumping out of a plane and less than 4 minutes into the film there's an explosion. I love it. And like, then there are several explosions. When the like titles come up, it's kind of. Amazing. Yeah, it's definitely. There's a lot of fire. They even used fire on the poster. I remember like behind the silhouettes of the Angel. Yes, yes. It was like kind of part of the whole theme.

So there is some really cute bloopers of this, but Drew takes off the LL Cool J mask. Wait, it's not really LL Cool J Surprised. I'll just say like, I like how when they first show him in the plane, he like pushes on his neck, you know, And I was like, I was like thinking about it. I'm like, OK, it's, it's obviously actually him, but it's funny that they're like. It's a good little detail. It's fun. Anyway, I also had to note that the mask the mask available Cool J was created by a famous special effects artist, Rob Botein, and my boyfriend really wanted me to mention it because he was so impressed that they had this really famous special effects artist.

Oh. That's so cool, I didn't know that at all. I believe he did the thing. Oh wow. You know, we did like lots of other stuff, but I believe that's one of them. Really good. Like I always watch that reveal closely and it's done extremely well. It's insane. I totally you totally buy it. Yeah, totally. And yeah, it's it's adorable. We get to see Drew's face for the first time in the movie. And we I love her first line. Let's hear it. All right.

I think you mean crazy bitch. She's like, surprise, I'm a cute little redhead, not this big, this big dude you thought I was. And I just have to say, and we're going to say this probably so many times, but each of the angels, this is when we meet each Angel, we get to see their kind of reveal. They all look so stunning, like just, I know that was like a big thing for McGee to have them look like very golden, very lit from within. But wow, these first three shots, you're just like, OK, so they're all unbelievably beautiful goddesses.

Right, like the team did exactly what they were supposed to do. You said elevated earlier and it's elevated like they are dressed and made-up to look just their best. Yeah. OK, then we get this montage, a really fun montage at the beginning. And some of the segments were from the first day of shooting at Huntington Gardens, including the army crawl shot, which is like just really quick. There's a lot of just like flashes. Can you imagine like just doing costumes for like? Just a flex. So fast, Oh my God.

So many like quick snippets of the angels like in their lives before they join the agency. We as we mentioned before, there's Drew being like the rebel girl in the bathroom smoking. I feel like I remember that cast that she's wearing being auctioned. Does that sound familiar to? You it doesn't. Oh man, I'll have to look into it because I do also remember the the muffin prop being auctioned. That's. Like funny. Yeah, very funny. That's really funny. We're we're all the other costumes and props. We'll talk about a little costume stuff later.

We know where some of them are. We do. I love that just in this little montage, Drew gets to show off that she can like cross and roll her eyes and, you know, like in a very like, you know, she can really has control over eyes. And it's in the scene with the drill instructor and I just I just love it. I always loved that for some reason. It's really good, just shows. We're like, I don't know the comedy in her, you know? Yeah. Oh yeah, for sure. Yeah, our little ham. Another thing I wanted to know is that they show the angels reading a newspaper that says mystery women save Mount Rushmore.

And Drew had that prop framed in her flower Films office. At least she did in 2001, which I think is really neat. I'm totally here for that. I love that little. Tidbit yeah, I also love there's this super quick, like you'd probably, I mean, I think nowadays you'd know what it is, but at the time you'd have to have read the books. There's Drew Drew's character being like Harry Potter, like in disguise. It's the invisibility cloak scene where he like puts on the cloak and goes to the library into like the forbidden books or something like that.

And it's crazy because so this is a full year before the first Harry Potter movie even came out, but. That's. Wild. The shot that they do in the movie is so similar to the one in Charlie's Angels, it's like kind of weird. They just took it from Charlie's Angels. Like the angle and everything, I'm like, wow, she really knew what that scene looked like in the book. That is really weird. Please put that in the gallery because I think people will see the comparison that is. So it blows my mind that it's before the 1st movie came out.

Yeah, because like the only reason why I have an image of Harry Potter in my mind at the time, I wouldn't have known. Yeah, I just remember, like, hearing about it, like she really liked the book, and so she thought that'd be fun to throw in there, so. Cool, I love it. Crazy one one other thing about this quick little 5 second montage that we're like, still talking about. It's great though. I just think this is so funny. So I was watching the like behind the scenes footage of like the very last part where they jump and it like goes into the title card.

And it was clearly filmed at Universal Studios because in the background you can see the Grinch sets, which would have been like filming at the same time because the movie was released two weeks after Charlie Sanders. Remember, they have those sets there forever. Though for a long time on. The tour, yeah. Yep, you could definitely see them. Whoville. Is that what it's called? Yep. Yeah, that's really funny. Really. Magic. I love stuff like that. Like, just like what's right next door, like what's on the other side of the camera.

That you have no idea. Right, it's like behind the scenes why we love it so much. All right, so now we get the Chad, his boat. This is Tom Green. It opens up with Drew looking super sexy and then she gets up and her lipstick is like smeared all over her face and her hair's insane. It's just perfect. It's so like over the top. There's like water dripping on her leg and it's pans up over her hip and you can see that she's nude under the sheet. Like it's just like so funny. It's so great and it sets the scene.

It sets the tone for that character in a way. Yeah, and the Chad's character, because right off the bat, he's a little, he's a little weird is. It the Chad.

It might be the Chad. Starfish.

And then he what is it? He says it was the Chad like a bunch of times and then jumps and then he. Throws his food in the water and falls. It falls. I wouldn't even call a jump. It's more of a like slow tilt. Right. And I and I feel like, I feel like that was improvised. I don't know why. Yeah. So that's so funny that you said that in the commentary. McGee says that he and Tom pretty much came up with that idea on the spot and it got McGee in a lot of trouble. Like probably I don't know insurance, who knows like what the reasoning?

Right, because they didn't. They hadn't planned to have him jump in the water. Oh, my goodness. Oh, that's so funny. It's worth. It. Yeah. I mean, it's, it's, I mean, it's so funny, the little bit of him. It's just enough to get like the full Tom Green. I know I told you in our text yesterday. I'm like, I should be annoyed by him, but I can't. I'm he's sitting over here just laughing so hard. He's so weird. He's so. Weird. And somehow, yeah, somehow he got us. So my recollection is that this was the scene that was being filmed when our Grapevine Druby French Venus like found out and got to like basically like wait by the side of the road and meet Drew.

Right. Do you kind of remember it being this one too? Because I feel like it was like a harbor, the harbor thing. Like that's what I remember. It doesn't really matter. It was definitely on the side of the movie, let's just say that. Right. And I'll just tell this, like, really quick story. I reached out to Venus because I saw her pop up on my Instagram feed, and I was just like, hey, we're about to mention you on the podcast. So one of the coolest things is that she told Drew about the message board.

Yeah, and I think she had Drew sign something that had like pictures of us on. There, Yeah. I think she made this like poster board and she put like all of our names around it, which was so considerate, like, right, so thoughtful. And Drew wrote to the Grapevine all my love and beautiful energy. I'll never forget it. I'm not reading it right now. I just remember it. I remember reading reading her story and seeing that picture on the on the message board and like sobbing because it was just like.

It was so touching. I probably thought at the time it was the closest to Drew I'd ever get. Right, so Venus, I have a little like just a little snippet, she said. Because I just love the way she like her perspective. Yeah. She said seeing an SUV stop in front of us, the window rolled down and seeing it was actually Drew driving. We didn't have the Internet or socials like we do now where we see a glimpse into our favorite celebrities lives. So seeing this in real life and her wearing cozy clothes and a day of action-packed film hair made her so adorably a real human person.

I do remember she's wearing like her uggs and like sweats of course. Yeah, it's so cool. So. Anyway. We had to mention that because that will this all just kind of solidifies or is a very perfect example of how in it the team was. Yeah, the team being us, the rubies on the Grapevine. Yeah. And we have like I have a horrible teeny tiny printed version of that picture of Venus and the poster board. And hopefully Venus can get us and true, obviously, and hopefully Venus could hook us up with a better version because I, I would really like to share it and I want to see it again bigger.

Yeah, I do too. Like I I can picture it. Yeah. So I must have it either in my mind's eye or save somewhere. All right, let's get back into the movie. So we get like the also the sequences of Natalie and Alex like doing their things in in the morning and getting the calls to come into the agency. And then that's where we end up at the Townsend agency to find out about their new case.

I thought this was interesting. The prop department believes that they got the original speaker or probably not the probably one of the original speakers from the TV show. And it does have like a very beat up scratch look to it. So I I buy it like I don't think there was one throughout the entire show and this is the one. Maybe that's why it's like we believe, because maybe there were so many that like, they don't even know which ones were actually on the air at this point. I don't. Know true but that's fun yeah we immediately get to see Drew's very random the spiral curls that are mixed in throughout her hair and they totally recreated that for the Barbie doll version of her That's funny and I just again her perfect red lips in this first part like perfection.

I think I have a memory that this was Jillian Fink Dempsey's line Deluxe Beauty and it was the Clovis red lipstick but I have not been able to confirm that. So just putting out there it may have been and I could be also totally wrong. Yeah, How do you confirm that? Ask Jillian. Yeah, right. I have been reaching out to her hoping she'll come on the show but no response yet. That would be cool. That would be so cool. I noticed that Natalie is reading a book that says it's called Music of the Birds, which I think is kind of fun because it's like laying the groundwork for later on where she can understand bird calls, supposedly.

Yeah, we'll talk about that more on that.

I love that tip that I did not notice that. Yeah, I was watching a very high quality version of this movie where I could see things that maybe I normally hadn't. So Alex, you know, she's like, trying to be, I guess in the book, AKA probably the script, she really loves Martha Stewart. So she's trying to be like a maker. Oh, that's why she's always like, cooking and stuff for her boyfriend. Yeah. So she makes muffins, and apparently they're horrible. And I always love Drew's delivery. She smells it and just very, like, under her breath goes.

Oh my God, can't even pull the audio because it's so subtle but it's so good. And then pretty quickly, if she decides she wants to throw one of these hard, apparently smelly muffins at Natalie and she does this little, like, tongue waggle that is like, so funny and silly. I love it. I love it. And this is the scene that caused that Bill Murray, Lucy Liu fight. And it's kind of a weird, like the dialogue is a little weird in this scene. So I could see how there would be like discussions about it.

Because he's like saying that whole thing about the heart being a muscle. I mean, it's funny, but it's also there's, it's never landed for me, I'll be honest. That's interesting. But none of that matters, because then the phone rings and we get the iconic moment.

Good morning, angels. Good morning, Charlie. You got to have that moment. You got to have that moment, and it's just a beautiful, a beautiful homage. Yeah. I mean, the whole thing is. The whole thing is. But that, and the fact that it's actually John Forsyth, is the coolest. I know the coolest. So Charlie's going to tell them about their new assignment for this tech billionaire guy who got kidnapped? Yep, and the tech billionaire, that's Sam Rockwell. I always love Drews. Like, not Drew, I guess Dylan's little spark when she sees him.

Like you can, you can see they're planting that she thinks he's cute. Like it's like she just. It's really, again, subtly, really well done, right. And then their client is Knox. His name is Eric Knox, his partner, and her name is Vivian Wood. And I know, like, with hindsight at the end of the movie, you know, that her character is like faking this whole thing. So I want to like, hope that Kelly Lynch was intentionally delivering her line so phony here. Like when she's like, I know he's still alive, I'm like, I'm not buying it.

And you know, right off the bat, props to Natalie. She's like, she did it like she knew. Right as she's walking in, she calls it at the beginning. That's how. Like, wise they are, that's how. Why is this not the word I want?

Savvy. Savvy. That's a perfect word. That's how savvy they are. OK, so then we just, I just have to mention this. So there's like this spa. It's apparently it's called Madam Wong's House of Blossoms and the Angel. I like that. You're like, what is this, a spa? And I'm like, hello, It's Madam Wong's House of Blossoms. Duh.

So Tim Curry is there and they need to like get. Is it his fingerprints? At this point I can't remember. Getting his like his PDA, they, they download that and they get his car key in print and that cool little compact. I love that. Little Oh, that's right, of course. I can imagine the sound of that thing closing and it's pretty. Satisfying. I love it too. Why is that? That's so weird. Anyway, so the angels are done in full Asian appropriation? Like full. Pretty bad. I always love Drew in a dark wig.

I know I hate that. I've always loved these pictures because I'm like, she's so beautiful. And then like in the year 2025, I'm like. Appropriation. Have done that right. I mean, I said I always love her in a dark wig. What I meant was I always love her with dark hair. It doesn't have to be a wig it. Doesn't have to be a wig. And then this movie is like boom, boom, boom. Like the picture book thing is totally happening. The pages are flipping. The angels are going to get some food because it was like a real point that which is so funny.

Like that just tells you what where we are at in society. This was printed everywhere. The angels are going to be enjoying food like they're going to really eat like real food. And it was like such a thing, like, I don't know, it's just so funny. I don't they don't even ever show them eating which is like. No, they don't. But we get the order. Can I take your order please? Yeah, I'd like 3 cheeseburgers, 3 French fries and three cherry pies. What do you guys want? And then I love that we get that classic little Drew air guitar, which like, who wants to go to a party?

And that brings out that goofy side of her. Yeah, yeah, yeah. This was like day two or three of filming and it was done at Foster's Freeze in Torrance, CA and Anna and I were lucky enough to go there once and it was pretty cool. We have pictures on the druseum.com/locations if you want to check those out. It's not nearly as like bright and colorful and graphic as it looks in the movie. Yeah, yeah. But it makes the perfect. It's like perfect. I don't even know what type of car that is. Maybe like a Challenger, a Camaro.

It's a Camaro. I'm. Pretty sure it was mentioned a million times in my research so I feel pretty good about that. And is that what they went to the No, I'm thinking of full throttle. The full throttle, The full throttle premier, Yeah. OK, OK. All right. So Corwin's party, this is Tim Curry's character. So at this point they think they're like basically investigating him. We should probably also mention the appropriation that his character does. He has like a whole Japanese fetish. Like his house is like shipped over from Japan.

Like everything at this theme to Japan, it's it's a strange little like character. Trait it is. I mean, I guess people get obsessed with cultures that are not their own. I don't know. Yeah. I've always loved how glam Drew is in this scene. She looks so hot, like immediately walking out of that elevator. So beautiful and like this is what another thing of just like where we are at in society. Her waist is so itty bitty teeny tiny in the scene and somehow the media was constantly telling us that she was like a bigger actress back then.

Like she's. Tiny. Crazy, I hate it. She's. Beautiful at any size. But anyway, I always loved when Leslie, like, taps a waitress on the shoulder, ends up being Natalie. And he's like, oh, and she like, she's so cute. How she's like, yeah, she like, holds like, a little, like, straight face when she looks at Tim Curry's character, It's so cute. There's so much charisma. I love Cameron Diaz in this movie. I don't think we said it enough. I she her smile. Just. She's amazing. She's adorable. So cute.

Yeah, she's completely lovable. And then Lucy is such a like, great, deadpan, hilarious actress in this. I fully Remember Me and my friends being the audience like screaming with laughter at the parts with Lucy where like the random guy is coming up to her and she's just like, no, no. And then of course the flip your goddamn hair. Like we were dying laughing. She's so good. So good, so good. All right, so then there's a really cute exchange between the angels when they're encouraging Natalie to talk to Luke Wilson's character, Pete.

It's so cute and funny. So cute. I remember thinking at that time, weird to have Drew encouraging someone like I think you said earlier, yeah, someone to flirt with. Her ex. Yeah, it's so cute. It's just perfect. Like, you know, wingman type stuff. Yeah. Yeah, it's really good. There is a deleted scene. It's like originally when Corwin is like challenging Bosley, it like, oh, can you you know, oh, you ate this blowfish. Now let's see if you can do this. They went into like this Marco Polo game in Corwin's grotto with like a bunch of girls and it's like, and then when he lost that, he challenged him to the sumo wrestling.

I'm glad they cut it. It's like unnecessary and again, very silly. All right, then we get into the first like fight scene of the movie. They spot the thin man. And it's got this amazing soundtrack under it. Guys, it's perfect. Smack my Bitch Up by the Prodigy. I love this moment. It's so, so good. Like, this is like, I literally get like, goosebumps. So I'm like, this is when shit gets real. And like, all that training they did, we get to see it pay off. And they look so incredible. And it's just like the music really adds to it.

Like, I think that's one of Mick G's, like, specialties, I would say, and probably Drew as well because we know she's really good at putting music into her productions. Yeah. It just like brings up the scene so much. Right. Speaking of elevating. Yeah, that raw footage that you can see on the DVD of this scene where like all the wires are still there, the music isn't there and like, it changes the tone incredibly. It's, it's really awkward without the Yeah, it's so awkward. One other thing I would have mentioned about this scene because you know how I am about like false information.

It's like the number one thing to get me heated and mad. Ever since like day one of this movie, there has been this prevailing movie mistake Internet rumor that drew accidentally says loose like Lucy and it's so clearly Lucy saying brace when they're like putting their hands together so that Natalie can jump. I hate it. That's like I found it again, like I searched came right up. I'm like wrong. So just, you know, officially setting the record straight on that one. Yeah. But this, this fight scene is just, it's so good.

It's really good. It would be really funny to see footage of Crispin Glover studying with the master. Yeah. Because like he does a lot in this movie, like the end scene again, he's fighting with Lucy. He's like bringing it and I'm like, what was that like that training session? Like he's so intense. He must have like done it separately. He's a quirky guy, right? I mean, yeah. That's why I can't imagine him like doing the training. It's so funny, right? Nick G said that he tried to get the angels to amped up to be as macho as possible and that, you know, like the whole running and everything.

He's just like, yeah, yeah, you could imagine. Yeah, I can totally. Imagine it. I think actually in that footage you hear him say like at the beginning, right, Doesn't he say? Like I don't. I don't remember. Never mind I forgot that this is how they end up getting led to Knox. I'm real post character being tied up. Like I didn't remember that chain of events. Yeah, clever. Even when they reveal that it's like Knox and Dylan's like Knox even there, she's kind of like, yeah, yeah. And I will say, so the next scene, they're like with Knox and Vivian at the agency and they're like planning the next steps.

And I remember the first time I saw it being like, wait a minute, does she like think this dork is cute? What is going on here? Like, I did not get the appeal, which is so funny cuz I think he's so like, now I'm like, hell yeah, some Rockwell. But at the time it wasn't doing it for me. I. Don't know it's about his his like vibe like getting it like seeing him act in multiple things and then seeing like him interviewed and seeing how freaking cool he is. He is one of those like personality making him even more attractive.

Guys. Good point. Good point. Totally, totally. All right. So now we're at the racetrack, and this was filmed at the California Speedway in Fontana, which is my hometown, and I was living there at the time. I have a newspaper clipping about this, and it has a picture of the car flipping through the intersection. So it's not actually from the Speedway itself, but right outside of it. Wasn't it on Cherry? Why do I remember that? Is that the name of the street? Yes, it is. I was actually just going to say that and it's that's it's probably I'm going to guess it's maybe like 5 miles from my parents house, maybe last.

Crazy. Were you just dying when you knew that it was filmed there? Do you remember? I remember being like, why didn't I know yesterday? Like what? You know, like the she was there. Yeah, that would have killed me. They ended up making this like a trial race in the movie with no spectators in the stands for like, studio and budgetary reasons. Originally they were going to make it like a major race with the stands just totally full. And then the studio was like, yeah, that's not happening. And they're like, OK.

I guess because they probably have to, it actually had to be like filled with extras like what would they do like? Yeah, that's that was the plans. Crazy. That is wild. I thought this was interesting. I do not remember this tidbit and it actually came up twice in my research. So Drew's wearing this platinum blonde wig and she, you know, Alex is like, do your thing. And she gets into Corwin's car with his driver to try to like distract him. And apparently she was going for Seca energy. And Seca was a seventies, 80s adult film actress and I couldn't find that much about her or like even that many photos of her where I was like, yeah, I see it.

But I I dropped this one in here. But I was like, that is so random. Like what a what a vague little pull. But I guess that was just her vibe. That was probably in her mood board. And in this picture, because of the platinum blonde, you see it immediately. And I don't know anything about her actual vibe though, you know, like. She says in the commentary that she was wasn't exactly known for her Shakespearean qualities, whatever that means. Weird. I think that probably means she came across as like kind of ditzy and airy, you know, sort of like Jews being in the scene.

Right. Did you say who the driver is? I didn't. OK, so the driver in the scene in Corwin's car is Andrew Wilson, Luke's brother. And this is the second of five Flower Films roles that he did. So he's in Never been kissed. He's the like security guard. Is that what he is? What is he in full throttle? He's like a cop at the like the CSI kind of crime scene. Oh yes, of course. And then he's in. I'm also blanking on fever pitch right now. Why? He's the like dude, the other guy. Oh, see, why am I so?

Because it doesn't. Feel like him in that movie. You know what, He feels really different in all of these because the last one you list here is whip it and he's the he's the coach. It's best one. And that's so great. Yeah, I love him and whip it and he. Gets the most, the most in that one. Everything else, he's just kind of like little things. And then he got like a full role. Yeah, they've definitely at some point called him like Flower Films Lucky charm. It's. Just so cool and so cute. The director of photography, Russell Carpenter, said that he didn't usually operate his own camera, but in this scene he felt compelled to get the close-ups of Drew in the car.

He doesn't like laugh about it or anything, but I'm like, well, that's clearly because she's looking so. Hot, Right? Right. Exactly. And this is interesting, though. So the shots of Drew, like there's one angle focusing more on Drew and then another angle focusing more on Andrew. They were shot on different days in different locations because they ran out of time at the Raceway. And Mick G is like telling Russell, like he's so impressed with how well he matched it because you can't tell. Like I was looking really closely and you cannot tell.

Whoa. And it's so believable. Drew's character Dylan is supposed to be distracting him with her. Like absolute hotness. She looks amazing as totally believable. Amazing. I. Love cars do. You like fast cars?

I like fast to everything, Oh my. God. She licks the steering wheel. It's a little, Oh my God. I think it's also fun to see her be, like, overtly sexy. Like, yeah, she's like, immediately. Like, it's hot in here and like. Speaking of plunging necklines, yeah. How are her boobs staying up like that? They're amazing. Right. And the the neckline goes like to her like belly. Basically. And then apparently the shots. So Natalie sees the thin man in a race car, she drives after him. And the shots of Drew and Lucy that are like talking to her were also shot in the studio parking lot because they ran into time.

Yeah, this is so funny to know those little things. Weird. And then I love that you noted this. So they're in my hometown, Fontana, and then within like seconds they're at the a bridge in Long Beach. Movie magic. It takes I don't know. An hour. 45 minutes on a great day. Exactly. OK, so we get this quick little scene where they're planning on how they're going to infiltrate Red Star. They've decided that Corwin's Red Star is like behind the kidnapping, and they're going to find out about how the security works there.

It's just really fun. And I noticed that Drew is wearing the outfit that she ended up wearing to the Blockbuster Awards in 2000. We had. I know we had already known that she had to go straight from the set of the film in a helicopter to make it on time. And I like, remember knowing that that outfit was in the movie. And then I thought it was a different scene. And I was like, oh, I'm wrong that it's not in the movie. And then when I watched and saw it here, I was like, I was right. It is in the movie.

That's so funny. I'm, I'm guessing she probably just like went in her makeup and everything, but yeah, they changed her. Hair, but it's so fun. Oh, then they probably changed her makeup too. Of course we get more cultural appropriation. Oh, this one's even worse. Yeah, it's part of the plan to to get into Red Star, and they're belly dancers in this one. But again, it's fun to see Drew in a disguise. Yeah, but not so fun to see the brown face make. Right. Oh, that was so unnecessary. Why guys? Why the year 2000?

Yep, and that was the fingerprints I think, right? I love the scene following that where she's in the lab. Me. Too. She looks so pretty like I've. Always loved how she looks there. And the lighting is like blue or green or something. It's really, it's really cool. It's very sciency. There's like beakers and bubbling stuff. I'm like, OK, sure. Speaking of disguises, we get the Swiss girls outfit. It's all like again, like really fast. Boom boom boom. Boom boom, boom boom. I'd love to know what she's saying there.

The music is giving me Matterhorn, by the way. I'd like to never totally just now. Totally. And. The singing is so not their voices, not even close, but I love it. I love those outfits so much. I love the pictures of them on the set in those move in those outfits. Oh my God. So cute, Too cute. Adorable. All right, so now they are an infiltrating Red Star. So they've gotten the things they need and we're going in. Insert Barracuda.

OK, sorry. And this is so, this is so great because one of the disguises is Drew dressed as a man, and Cameron is as well. We love this. It cracks us so much. Laughing already just like little man Drew. Like why is it she doesn't even look like herself? It's crazy how like like Cameron still looks like Cameron. Drew does not look like herself. It's really cute. Weird little snippet that said supposedly this day after filming she stayed in the boy drag to like surprise Tom for dinner at Musso and Frank but Tom came dressed as a nun.

So I'm like where are the photos of this? I'm having a hard time believing this be. Real. I believe that she went, but that he was dressed as a nun at the same time. I don't know. I mean he is kooky. Those wacky too in that relationship always right up in the right all. Right, so there is a small appearance by Melissa McCarthy really early in her filmography, which is cool, and she also has a cameo in the sequel. So yeah, the same seen as Andrew Wilson. Oh, cool. Yeah, it's just fun. Again, it's one of those like flower films, or maybe we give this to Justine and Kim where it's just like somebody so early before their stardom, like in one of their movies.

It happens a lot. It's really cool. Right. Lucy again, this was another scene where she was just killing me and my friends. She's so good in the scene. My favorite line is who else has an idea like this man's Coke machine? And then they all raise their hands. It is really funny. The crowd like going behind her as they distract the entire office while they're while the other angels are breaking in. Genius there. There's apparently a deleted scene of Dylan, Natalie and Corwin in the bathroom and and the set was designed to look exactly like the bathroom in The Shining.

Like that is rad. So cool, it looks exactly like it, like it really does That's. Cool. It also makes me sad they like went to all that trouble and then it didn't make it into the movie. Yeah, I know. Hey, at least they apparently took a snippet of it and used it for the opening montage of Full Throttle. That's funny. Yeah, that's what I remember anyway. I hope that's right. I'm pretty sure it is. I loved having more footage of little Drew even though the scene like it's not good. She does this little like adorable hilarious dance in the deleted scene that I think is very similar to the one that's at the end and like the.

Blooper End. Yeah, she's just like loving being this little man. So cute, so cute. There is actually also a part in the footage, like behind the scenes, where probably McGee says something like ladies, and she's like, excuse me. And they're like she's like, sorry men or whatever. Her and Cameron just totally handing it up. So good. It's funny. All right, so the next thing that comes up, Dylan goes to Knox's and I think this was originally going to come earlier in the movie before they made some changes.

It was going to happen before the racetrack scene. But she's there to like, you know, set up security at his house. I love that they use Spandau Ballet is true because I immediately think of The Wedding Singer and me too, Robbie and Julie. Ah ha ha. Apparently it's a duplex as well. I don't remember that but I found that in my research. I'm like, this is just a movie, a song that Drew loves or what I. Guess I just made a note again, like she looks beautiful and like do I need to keep saying this?

Like I know. Probably not. She does, though it's hard not to make notes about it. Right. Drew and Sam's first Scrabble fun is in this scene, and two years later, in Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, there's a Scrabble scene. Why is it make? They're so cute together, and McGee said it to us because we had just watched the movie together in the theater and I forgot even how he said it. I think he said like, oh, it's so fun to see Drew and Sam play on screen playing Scrabble again. Or I feel like it had to have been intentional.

Like, kid, that can't be a coincidence, right? Like, I don't know, maybe, I don't know, maybe George Clooney was like, what game should you guys be playing? And they were like, oh, let's do Scrabble off because we had a whole thing about them. Charlie's Angels. I don't know, I like to think that. Maybe it's really cute and I think you started to say they're so cute in that scene, yes. Yeah, well, in both, like, I just love how Drew she, she has great chemistry with him in both those movies. Totally, totally not so cute.

Is the like additional footage that they were gonna have on this scene? It's so awkward. I can't. It's hard for me to even watch. It's it's really bad it. Probably didn't have the like, right music in it. But basically the original idea was this was going to come earlier in the film and Dylan was going to cut this little moment short. Like she was going to maybe kiss with him a little and then be like, no, no, no, you're a client. I gotta go. And she like, leaves. And they ended up she ends up coming back later at a different day, but they took that out.

So it looks like this is like she stays the night. I like the way they cut it in the movie because she just goes to I want to shake. And then it's like, you know, it's implied. We don't get this awkward like dancing. And yeah, it's. So bad being thrown on the counter. Yeah, Yeah. But there was a deleted scene where apparently she's back at Knox's for some action. It's not on the DVD, but it's shown in the TV trailer. It was pointed out to us by at Charlie's Three Sexy Sleuths. So thank you for noticing that.

Friend Marcus, I like it's like a super fast Reefs flash of Drew and Sam kissing and Drews wearing this sparkly sweater that we've seen photos of her in or maybe a photo that's right in the movie. So in the novelization, which they based on on the script that they explain what happens here, like she goes back over to his house and she like is like hi, hi. And they're like, and then they make out and then she ends up like staying there. And then that's when we pick up later where she's like in his bed.

So again, easy to pull it out and not use it, but I would love to see it one day. We know it exists. Right. So the next few scenes are without Drew because that deleted scene we just mentioned of her at Knox's would have like gone in to the middle of all this but it's of the other angels and Bosley like doing their thing but then they all start getting attacked. So Natalie and Pete are on a date at Soul Train. I love these scenes so much. It's so. Cute. Why Luke is so cute in the scene? Like, I love all his stuff with the bouncers, and he's, like, trying to warm up to them and he's, like, cheering her on as she's dancing.

All right. The robot. Yeah. And like how they make him like a full foot shorter than them too. So if. You guys have got to be standing on Apple boxes. Like, there's no way they're that big. I also love how this is what I'm talking about. Like Cameron can go. She's like so goofy and silly in the scene. She like, tells them I have to go #1 and then she's like in the bathroom, like, Oh my God, I'm having so much fun. And then she gets attacked and she's like, turns into such a badass. Like, I love her freaking like stiletto boot in the guy's freaking throat.

And she's like. Who? Sent you. It's like just amazing. There's always this quick swap. Yeah, she does it again later in the movie, you know, when she's talking to Pete and she gets attacked from the guys that are guarding Bosley and she, like, goes back and forth that she's just flawless. You seem like you're a little preoccupied or whatever. Yeah, so funny. It's so funny. All right, so Alex is now at Jason's movie set. Why did we always love this so much? I don't know why Because. It's just so silly.

So yeah, they're like sitting at a table in like a courtyard and. Oh, so you think you think it's Alex? He's actually filming the movie within a movie? Like his date gets killed. It's just part of the movie. That's right, it's. Pretty. I remember being tricked by it the first time I saw it. And then he says this line, baby. Go ahead. No, Jim, you Salazar. Jim you Salazar.

God jam you, Salazar is just like, become part of our vocabulary. It's just so good. The director in this scene is totally like doing a MC G and says that was the best scene of the best movie ever. He's even dressed like him, like he it's probably his actual cowboy hat. Like they they look the same. So that is really funny. Maybe it's just him. It could be. It sounds a little like him. It could be. And then like we just see what's going on with the other characters. So we we found out through Natalie's attack that Vivian Wood is behind this attack.

We didn't even mention that Alex also gets attacked. Like she gets completely shot at in Jason's trailer, but she survives of course by hanging on the ceiling. And then Vivian goes to Bosley and drugs his drink and the creepy thin man kills Corwin. So all this shit's going down like boom boom boom boom. And we're not seeing Dylan because she's getting it on with Knox, I guess. Right, so then we get the reveal of this villain. So Dylan so cute tied up in her sheet as a dress like toga. I think he says like toga cute or something.

Yeah, it's so like it's so perfect. I'm like there is no way that's a real sheet. Right. And then she sees she like, gives him a kiss and then sees that there's somebody there. And it's Vivian. She spins around in the chair and then I love this is so cute. She sits down in front of the Scrabble board that's right in front of her and spells out enemy because she kind of thinks that they're not in cahoots, but guess what? And. What the funny part is that they didn't think it would read on screen so they did this like voiceover of Drew going.

Enemy. It's so goofy. And then he says, I know and was like, your stomach just drops for poor Dylan cuz guess what guys time to put on got to give it up. And Knox is the bad guy. And that transition, that turn where he goes from this like, dorky goof, lovable guy to this shithead evil asshole is so good. That's like, This is why you need Sam Rockwell for this part, because he pulls it off. It's like a whole different person all of a sudden. Like he literally like takes off a shirt and pulls out a cigarette and you're like, what?

Who is this like? Oh my God, it's so good. Props to him. Yeah, totally. And of course, Dylan is really pissed because she's been. She's been duped. Yeah, she's been duped. And she's she's a crime fighting Angel that's supposed to kind of be, I don't know, judge of character anyways. Yeah, it's And she carries that like pissed offness for the rest of the movie, like. You're right. She's really good at having this like fuck you energy after what he did to her. I love it. I want to see her do a whole movie in the fuck you energy I guess.

Me too. All right, so she gets shot out his window, but she's not shot. The window just crashes and she like it's just dangling down with her toga then falls down completely naked onto a hill. Like how you said the audio of her falling and it once you've made a note of that, I noticed it's really funny. She's like this way, yes. But she falls into the backyard of the ET house, which is such a fun thing. It's so fun, like so unnecessary, but just to have it there as this cute little Easter egg, I absolutely love it.

I also love that the house still the same owners as it did. In 1980. Two amazing and so, so cool and drew on being at the house again, she said. It was like checking into that world that I remember so well. Yeah, and it it's a little over the at the top, but in the shot, they have like an ET poster on the wall and there's Reese's Pieces in a bowl. It's cute. It's a little much, but it's cute. And we get our naked Dylan at the window. These little boys are playing video games. And she knocks on the window and says.

Hello help. She's wearing nothing but a pool floatie. Really cute. And we get a little butterfly tattoo peek. We love a tattoo peek as you guys know. And also I have to shout out one of the best drew related costumes I have ever seen was a guy dressed as Dylan naked with the pool floatie. And I will link to that and put the voter in our gallery and I'll give them credit because so creative and amazing. It's so funny, so funny. And I, I think niche costumes like that are also like, we are like the audience.

We get it, you know, like that's, that's so great. This part, I don't know why it always made us laugh so much. The agency explodes. Bosley's locked up. That's not funny. But Drew rides up on a bike looking so pissed. Like you said, she keeps that pissed thing going, clearly wearing the young boys clothes who just gave her a little bit of help. On his motorbike, I'm sure. Little motorbike and her expression is just so funny. And the motorbike is like rain. Yeah, I love her post Off face there. Why do we love Angry Drew so much?

She's just so cute. Yeah. Nick G said something along the lines of like, he wanted this explosion of the agency to be so loud and huge that they would never be allowed to film on Universal again. Like they were going to piss people off that much. He's got to have the biggest thing ever, Nick G And we're like interspersing with Bosley locked up in this tower. And I I credit to Bill Murray because him just kind of like doing his thing, riffing, improvising. I'm sure it's all really hilarious stuff.

It's so funny actually, the way they get them connected. Yeah, it's really he's. Got like his old molar mic that's from the Corwin party that he realizes is still in his mouth. The Angels just happened to be right around Townsend Agency at the time that he is trying to speak to them and he calls to them, Hello angels, can you hear me? They hear him. I always love it just real quick when they're like Drew, like lifts something to like get to the speaker. She does a really good like reacting like it's hot like.

Oh, she does some real. Good subtle stuff in this movie. She's like. Through that mic, Natalie, here is the sound of a bird. Like you said, there's that thing earlier. She's reading that book, and she identifies it as a pygmy nut hatch. Pygmy nut hatch. And there's there's this whole article on Slate where they uncover the make, model and sound of the bird, which I think is so funny to describe it like that, like it's a car it. Is so good like the subtitle is the story behind cinema's most mysterious bird.

Like the author is a total nerd like us loves these like tiny tidbits and was like why did they use the name Pygmy nut hatch when the sound of the bird is wrong and the look of the bird is wrong. You guys. We will link to this article. Our friend Tess was the one who told us about it. I loved it so much and it like went kind of viral cuz it is so like random. It's so silly and it's so well researched. Like it was totally up our alley. Totally. So that tells them where where to go. She's Natalie's like they only live in one place.

Carpet so. Then they're going there and on their way they they show the this famous green tunnel in LA that's used so much for filming. I couldn't remember what it was called, but it's it's so many things. Like the first thing I think of there's it's an incubus video that has it, but it's in a bunch of stuff. It's called the 2nd St. Tunnel. OK and it is in so many movies and music videos like I can't even begin to list them all. It's like they only mention the Incubus 1 and I know for sure it's in one of those.

But yeah look it up. 2nd St. Tunnel just famous filming location. Awesome. They actually don't even mention Charlie's angels in here. Come on, what the hell? There's just too many. I also forgot that they get to Carmel by calling up Chad the Chad. How could you forget? But I think it's so cute Drew and Tom singing together in the boat. They're little like off key singing. This is the first Josie Grossie moment. So like when the angels look at her like, why are you singing with this guy? She does this like awkward little shrug, lip bite.

I'm like Josie Grossie just popped out. Totally, totally. And then when the angels are about to dive into the water, they're, you know, they're getting ready to go and do their thing. There's business that needs to happen. Always. Here's the dialogue. Starfish, are you going swimming? Where are you going? Where are you going again? Starfish? Was it the Chad?

No, the Chad was great. So cute. Also why does he call her that? Never never mentioned. We never get an explanation but it's good. Do you remember when Flower Beauty released that palette that was like Charlie's Angels, inspired of eye shadows and one of them was called Starfish and one of them was called the Chad? I don't think I noticed. That, or if I did, I totally blanked on it. Yeah, classic me. Yeah, that'd be you. Yeah. And this timeline is when tomgreen.com basically was like A blog of their life.

And there were pictures of this day on tomgreen.com. Tons of them. They're really cool, like we would never have these otherwise. I think he did like maybe it was like daily photo or something, but like there were a bunch from this filming. So we'll share a couple of those with you guys. That was so cool. Of course, I love that we have to talk about Sam Rockwell dancing because that's the thing that he and his son always doing because he's really cool at it. Might notice. Hell yeah. All the angels change out of their scuba gear basically into these completely other outfits.

Where do they get them from? Out of the ether. And the outfit that Drew puts on. We have a version in the Jerusalem of. We have the stunt double S. And it's very recognizable. Like it's really fun to see it. They used it when we were on the Drew Barrymore show and we brought a bunch of our memorabilia. They used that one like part of me was like, but Drew didn't wear that one. Don't put that one on the stage. But, but when you see it, it looks so cool. And they put like a red wig with it. It was awesome.

It did look really cool dressed up like that. It was guys, yeah. If you don't know about that exhibit that we did, we have to. We reference these things, but for some reason you don't know. Go back and check a couple episodes back. So Dylan drops into Knox's lair and it very like, surprise bitch energy. Like he's just like, you could see he's just like what? But then he like, you know, snaps out of it and he, he tapes her up. And do you remember when Sam was on the Drew Barrymore show and they, like, filmed this little segment of her sitting in a chair with the tape and the lip print and, like, they didn't give any context?

Like if you didn't know this movie, you'd be like, what the hell is this? And why is Sam Rockwell taping over Drew Barrymore's mouth like what is happening here? But we loved it. Yeah, we did. So Knox is using those satellites and all this technology that we kind of skipped right over to determine where Charlie is because he thinks that Charlie is the reason that his father died in the war. We didn't mention any of this, but you guys know the movie and yeah. Hopefully you do. When poor Dylan's just like taped up and she hears like the conversation with Charlie and she sees that Knox figured out where he is.

Like she's doing some good eye acting there. Like she just looks so sad and worried. And the way that Drew yells no after the tape is torn off her mouth, it sounds exactly like the delivery of no from Ever After when Utopia is thrown in the fire like. No, like just devastated. Yes, like like about to cry. Right. Like perfect. Oh, I love that. And then we get Dylan's fight with all the dudes to blurs song too, which also is like perfect for a fight scene. It's so good, but first she has to give us a little speech.

I got something to tell you. By the time this is over, everyone of you is going to be face down on the floor and I'm going to moonwalk out of here. You're not listening to me, see? First, you're going to. Help me out of my chair and then I'm going to leapfrog over you before I break his nose. And since my trusty lighter isn't working, I'm going to do all of this with my hands tied behind my back. Hell yeah. Woo, so great. Oh man. And that like flip move she does, it's again, so satisfying to see her pull it off because there's footage of her just like, struggling to get it.

And then it's like, yes, you did it, girl. So great. And then she succeeds at exactly what she said she was just going to do. And that's kicking. Your ass.

And I had to note that's pretty much the lispiest lisp we've ever heard from Drew, right? Nick G, You couldn't have had her say it again. Like that's the take you. I feel like that was like parodied, I don't know, like. I mean, it's classic line. And also like, I think, I think we like she doesn't have like a a lisp all the time. Like it's like sometimes comes out. So like when, when, when people who do impressions of her make it all lispy, it's like, no, that's not right. Like it's not always like that.

You know how I feel about Drew Impressions. Also, this is the other Josie moment. The little moonwalk. Moonwalk. Hard air quotes. I literally saw my daughter do a moonwalk on stage today right before we started doing this, and she could really do it. It's awesome. Drew is doing more like a Roger Rabbit and it's really goofy. It's. Not a moonwalk. I'm surprised I didn't put a note because I think I put a note and I delete it. That said, like, not a moonwalk. She's giving big time Josie energy, like what happened to Dylan?

OK, so we get more fights with like, you know, Vivian and Natalie are going at it and the Thin Man and Alex. And then I never really thought about this before, but like, Knox just blows up the fortress and I guess those two just get exploded away by guys. Never. Thought about that either. Do you remember McGee saying I think it was McGee like one of the only times they ever used stunt double S for the Angels is like that explosion scene where they jump off the castle or fortress or whatever. I don't.

Remember that. Yeah, that was like a big part of the marketing, like, oh, that they do everything themselves and it's so funny. Like watching it, you're like, absolutely not. That is so not true. Like a lot of this is stunt work. They do amazing stuff themselves, but like, there's a lot that is not them. Maybe he's like because, and normally it would be mostly stunt people. In this case, I don't know, he's just. Exaggerated. They were really trying to push the like the girls did so much training, which they did, but right.

So Knox is taking his helicopter to get Charlie and of course the Angels find a way to jump on board as they always do. And Dylan is still pissed and she climbs in there and she just starts. Wailing on him, Oh my God, wailing on him so hard. And the angels have to like, pull Dylan away. I love that. So that that doesn't blow up in her face because the helicopter is literally about to blow up. And she's still, like, looking at me, like, yeah. I do love that scene. I love her. Her face there like looks so pissed.

And that he blows himself up, right? He blows himself up. Then they are literally washed up on the beach. It's just such a funny little thing and they're like peeling themselves off the beach, like really wet. And they get to go up to Charlie's little beach house and they think they're going to meet him, but of course he's not there. It's just the speaker box. I love the way they're acting though. I know. It's so cute. They're so excited. Do we look OK? It's really funny. They have like a prop of the same photo of Knox's dad and Charlie in the war, the same photo that Knox has.

I'm like, as if Charlie would have this framed. Not only is it framed, it's framed alongside the one of the angels. I'm like, come on. But I love the one of the angels. So cute. It is really cute, totally. So Charlie talks to them on the speaker and he says that he wants to know if the case went well and if it's all done. I think the client was blown away. I feel like we're getting genuine laughter from them over how cheesy that line is. Get it? Wink, wink, wink. Yeah. Speaking of winks, so we have this finale on the beach.

So they're just like drinking out of coconuts on the beach. And Chris Miller, who we mentioned earlier, our dear friend, he has a little cameo, I guess we can call it. He appeared very briefly delivering a drink to Dylan. And she gives them this adorable, just brief wink. He looks so young like this is AI think this is an onset photo that he shared and he's just a little baby. It's crazy. I love that crazy it is. We get another tattoo peek from Dylan. We can see her cross tattoo which is crazy that like you go the whole movie never seeing her legs up until this moment.

Oh yeah. And Dylan sees a man on the beach talking on a cell phone at the same time they're talking to Charlie. Cell phone in the year 2000. It must be Charlie. It's really cute, though. I really love that moment. She's like, Oh my God, I think that's him. And it's OK. I don't need to, like, bother him. I'm just happy to be here and we're good. And how do you not just have a huge smile on your face at the end of this movie? Like, they all run into the ocean. The music's happy, like everything's great.

What a what a fun ride. It's so cute. And then it's not even over. Right, because the end credits are packed with all kinds of fun, too. I think this is about like some of the best end credits of any movie ever. I know I'm biased but like they're so enjoyable. It's so cute. So this part of the movie is where the angels are dressed as a rock band, and we have this costume in the Druseum that Drew is wearing in this, and it was featured on Collectors Call. So if you don't know what the heck we're talking about.

Go to our last episode. Yeah, go to our last episode. Go to our website. I also noticed there's a flash of this at the beginning of the movie, I think in the montage. I don't think I realized it before. So fast. Yeah, as we talked about on Collectors call, we like have to imagine it was Drews like idea or input to have her wearing a Duran Duran T-shirt because we know she loved them growing up. Right, right. Fun little touch. In the credits, the first part of the credits at least, it's Blink 182's, all the small things which feels that feels exactly that time.

It's so perfect. It's perfect. And it's perfect fun, like you're just having a good time. I think the angels are supposed to be like playing along with that. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think so too. And like I said, this, this part especially looks so much like a Nick G music video. It's just hilarious. Totally, I love that you put a screenshot in here of like the round pedestals. Right. Yeah. And there's just all these cute little, like just behind the scenes snippets. There's some bloopers and there's just some like cuteness as they're on the set of the movie.

It's just, it's cut really well. It's so fun. Yeah, it's so cute. A couple little things in here. I mentioned the dance jig earlier that the little man Drew does. And then there's also a little like he he like, I can't do it. Yeah, her piggies. Oh, I can. She Yeah. Makes piggy sounds. Although I do have to say, it's always bothered me that they're like Cameron Diaz and they like show these clips and then she gets like a really fun blooper where she falls and like Alex, like, you know, Lucy Liu and she does the blooper where the arrow hits her back in the face.

And then Drew's isn't real because it's from that extended version of her and Knox's date where she intentionally planned is planned for her to roll off the counter. And they use that. And I'm always like, come on, they do at least show like the taking off the mask part and some other silly moments with her. So that's fine. And that's the movie. Let's go make out with our girlfriends. Let's do it.

OK. So let's talk about kind of the build up to the release of the movie because there was a lot of anticipation with this one, as we mentioned. And the very first thing that sort of happened was all three Angels. And Bill Murray debuted the teaser trailer at Show West in March 2000. So there's cute, you know, they, they're walking on stage. And it was like kind of their big debut. Do you remember this teaser trailer? It's funny, I, I watched it just now to remind myself, Yeah. And I, I had remembered the beginning part, which I guess I'll describe this part.

So it has like a, it almost looks like a James Bond style guy in a suit walking through like a hallway. So he's like completely in silhouette. And then within like 10 seconds, there's this voiceover that's like, I forget what it's saying, like dramatic voiceover. It's like when the world's biggest people need help, they call one man because he's the only one that can reach them. Or something like that, right? Well the guy like splits into three women basically. Like his silhouette turns into 3 angels.

The Angel silhouettes. Doing their martial arts moves, it's actually really exciting. It is exciting. I didn't remember that the first teaser trailers where they used those, Like, I don't even know how to describe them. There's like silly, like almost like introductions of the yeah, angels, but they're, I don't know. How do you describe that? I didn't remember that part. It's kind of like just introducing them and they each have their little like look to camera moment with like this again, like foil behind.

That it's like, you know, it is like foily. Yeah, and it does the whole and Bill Murray is Bosley. And I remember watching this must have been through like shitty Internet. I remember watching it in the library at college, like when I worked funny the same like room where I remember like seeing the first picture of you. This is kind of funny. Oh, that's funny. They all kind of merge together. Yeah, so I remembered some of it, but not all of it. So it was kind of fun to like, revisit it. Yeah, we'll definitely link to this on the episode page for you guys if you don't remember it.

Yes. And then the promotion continued. So just a few weeks after show W, they presented at the Oscars. So the angels came up and presented together. I remember that. I remember like it being exciting. And we talked about Drew's dress that she wore to this event earlier, which was made by the costume designer. Joseph Felici. So yeah, so more promotion happened then they had many premieres. So red carpet premieres occurred in York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Paris, London and Berlin. And so fun, so fun. And also in promotion for the movie, they did tons, dozens of magazine photo shoots and TV appearances to promote the film.

So you can hear us talk about all the outfits they wore to those events and. Yeah, it's interesting. Like I threw a couple of their shared covers and photo shoots in the episode gallery for this one, obviously. But yeah, there's even a lot of like, solo things that Drew did, and it's just it was a great time, guys, let me tell you. Were there premiere magazine issues like back-to-back or like it was like.

Months apart, yeah. So the Angels were together on September, and again, that was sort of like the debut, like that was like the first time. And then two months later, for November, it was Solo drew cover like crazy. That was so cool. We were really getting spoiled back then. Yeah, we were. But we've, we've, you probably have heard us talk about like how overwhelming the amount of paper there is from the year 2000 and we love it. But it's also like we've got 100 like different versions of like the poster and like.

The same things over and over. In addition to all the like paper magazine stuff, there was also a ton of merchandise sold for this movie. The most like memorable being the Jacks Pacific dolls that were like Barbie esque, except they were a little more like action Figuri. I guess poseable. I totally remember, I think it was Entertainment Tonight or Access Hollywood, like doing a segment on this and showing like the technology that they used to supposedly scan the Angel faces. Like they didn't show them, but they showed somebody else doing that.

And it's interesting. Like they look like them from certain angles and then other angles. It's like what happened there. Right, right. Like I feel like the Drew character, the Dylan doll, sort of looks like Drew head on. Especially in profile, I think the profile's pretty good. And then she's got the butterfly tattoo, which is such a cute. I always really appreciated that they bothered with that, you know? Right, right. And they also did two different versions of these dolls. So like, they're two different outfits.

Signature looks. That's what they called them.

I think we both have both of them. Yeah, of course. Yeah, of course we do. It's like so many ads, so many pieces of random memorabilia, like really fun random little things they did. There's like a version of Dylan's car and just all kinds of stuff like that. And then of course, there was also a soundtrack that was which starts out with the classic with My Girl, Drew, Cameron D and Destiny.

Charlie's angels come. On I Love with My Girl Drew, it's like retail.

And that song? Plays in the drive through scene of the movie and then also when the like. Final end and. End. Credits are rolling. So super fun.

The movie debuted in the US on November 3rd, 2000. We. Mentioned this at the top of the. Episode big big anniversary big our 2025 years ago the year 2000 the. Movie opened at number. One which is really cool for Yeah, like we know that she was nervous about this totally. And it grossed more than 264,000,000 worldwide, which I think every time we talk. About these, I'm like I have no. Like gauge, like I don't pay enough attention to know, but that's a lot of money. I don't either. Yeah, it's a lot of money.

And I remember I did look like. So there it was #1 for. Several weeks and then so I was like, it had to be like one of the top grossing films of the year. But that was a big year for movies. So it was like #18 for the whole year, which is crazy because it did really well. It was just people were going to the movies that year. Yes. And the DVD is packed with special features and Easter. Like tons of stuff. It's been so long since I've like gone through. Thankfully a lot of it is on YouTube. You found out at this point there's a lot of behind the scenes footage from this movie.

Like there's back when DVD's like this is like sort of I think almost the peak. Of when it was like. Let's just put as. Much on there as we can like, like why not like there was so much cool stuff that we are able to see and of course as we mentioned. Mick G does a. Director's commentary, along with the cinematographer, Russell Carpenter. And it's like, no one does that stuff anymore. It feels like. I don't get it. Yeah, that's true. I remember like when I wanted to buy something. On DVD, I would like if it didn't have special features.

I'm like, lame. Yeah. And now it's just like, that's the standard, I think. I haven't bought a DVD in a while, but yeah, I haven't bought a DVD or. Blu-ray in a while or if I have I'd like. Probably haven't played it. I bought it like for the collection, right? You know what's so funny is that before I even had an actual DVD player, my sister. 'S boyfriend had a PlayStation which played DVD's, So the very first DVD's I bought simultaneously together, I, I think from Amazon were this and Fight Club.

And it was like, so exciting to me to get to, like, watch those. And I mean, this DVD, if you guys don't have it, it's just such, it's so fun. And there's so much, like, there's literal Easter eggs where you have to like, move the cursor to like a certain place to find it, find it so fun. That's cool. I feel like I need to like, put it in at some point soon and and like, play with it again, yeah. Or just DVDs in general. Like I don't remember the last time I like put a physical media into. I do it pretty much every time we're doing a movie episode.

That's kind of the only way usually, because you're playing your. Actual, yeah, usually, I guess Doppelganger. I was like, cool. It's free on Amazon. Prime. I'll just watch it at work, right? Right. That ones not an event the way watching Charlie's Angels is, right? Right, OK. So of course, with the great success, a sequel. Was like, inevitable. So the second film went into production in 2002, ended up being titled Charlie's Angels Full Throttle, and it was released in summer 2003. But we are going to save all our talk about that one for its own episode.

Like, there's no, I don't know how anybody could combine these two movies. It's just way too much unless you went into a lot less detail than we do. Yeah. Well, I have a feeling this is probably the most. Exhaustive like podcast that's ever. Been done about this movie. Probably Flower Films also produced. A short lived TV. Series that was out. In 2011. I never watched it. Did you? Me neither. No, I feel kind of bad. There are actually a few things that they've that they've released that I haven't watched.

So Flower Films has done like they. Did like a couple horror things that I did. I haven't. They did a couple horror, a couple like reality things that like just it was just hard to keep up with for a while. Then there was a reboot movie in 2019 that was written and directed by Elizabeth Banks. I also did. Not see that same, but you noted here that the race track and the Swiss Miss costumes have small appearances, which is so. Interesting. So they like. I think they're like showing the Angels vault.

I don't know what it is the. Archive and they briefly panned by those two, which was a cute little nod. I think that's the best way to do it. That's cool. It's probably fun. I mean, this is such a fun. Like the core of Charlie's Angels is so fun. Yeah, and then here we are, like rumors of a third movie with our three angels. Have continued to swirl and there have been moments where it's really seemed like in the past year that something was going to happen. Even Drew herself almost said without saying to us, right?

But nothing. No news. It's like no official news, no official news. But every time, like Drew has publicly talked about it. Or like either. Of like Lucy Liu. Or Cameron Diaz. I feel like they're just like, yeah, I would do it. Like, absolutely. I don't think either of them has had any hesitation in the public eye about it. So, you know, we have hopes. And I feel like it will happen. I do, too. Maybe it's happening now. Maybe. Maybe. And that's where we're at. Did we do it? Did we actually? Talk about Charlie's Angels.

I can't believe. We did it. We did the first. Thing we've been avoiding like the plague, but avoiding but I'm like. So excited to have done it. Like every step of this I was like. I love. Charlie's Angels, I forget I will say this kind of what you were alluding to earlier like. It was a little. Overwhelming. And it still can be. Like when we're going through our collections, it's like all the Charlie's Angels stuff. Like you almost want to flip past it in a weird way. But watching this movie is always so much fun.

Like I am always beaming. I am always like so pumped and so excited and laughing and happy. Like everything Drew wanted people to feel. I feel. Yeah, me too. Totally get the like flipping pass the like all the paper stuff that came out, especially when it was like the. Same pictures printed over and over and over again. But yeah, there is like something about like the movie has this sort of like maybe somewhat over stimulating thing about it. And so does like all of the promotional stuff that happened the way that we're like, we accepted it and we love it.

We love our stuff from 2000 even though it takes up entire binders, right? I know I accidentally picked up the following years binders and I was like why? Is this so light? Like there's no way my 2000 binder is this light. Then I was like oh wrong one. That makes feel like that makes sense.
