049 – One Year Anniversary!

So this is going to be kind of a different episode for us. We'll have some stuff at the top and then we're just going to kind of talk about ourselves for a little while. It's a very meta episode, yes. Yes, it sure is. But we've got some really fun stuff at the top. So let's get into our Our mail segment, You've Got Mail. All right, so we had a message from someone called Susie on Instagram.

1:40 And this is really cool because it's a follow up to our Episode #45 where we covered U.S. magazine from May 1994. And here's what Susie had to say. So she said hi, I bought the May 1994 U.S. magazine just to have her photo shoot in print and then she put like a in love :) and then she said she's absolutely adorable, so cool. And she sent us a picture of the magazine, which is just great. Like, I love that someone listened and was inspired to get it. Like, how fun is that? I love it. I love it that there is, I don't know, someone loving it.

We need to just say we love love love and love, love, love. May 1994, U.S. magazine. Yeah. OK, so now what did you pull for this week in Drew History? OK, well obviously this week in Drew History, the best podcast about Drew Marymore to ever exist, debuted a year. Ago, of course. So that's it. What's next? I guess let's talk about something from Drew's actual life.

2:48 All right, so August 19th, 2010, we have the going the distance London Premier and I love this look, so I chose it partially for that reason. Yes, this is a really good one. Describe it for us. OK, as far as the style goes, relatively simple, but let's get into it. So one thing that's super fun about it that you made the note about is that she tested out her breathe tattoo on her arm, which of course we didn't know that would become a tattoo. Yeah, it's funny. Some people think that's the actual tattoo.

3:21 But it's clearly, like a lot bigger. Like it's probably like 25% bigger or something. And also, we've talked about that a bit. Check out our tattoos episode. She's also wearing an Alexander McQueen dress and like this kind of, it looks sort of like Gray green, like Army green. She's got like, a shiny belt. I didn't realize she also had a bag that was Alexander McQueen, but now I'm seeing in her hand it's so cool because it looks like the Union Jack flag, which is so appropriate. Yeah. And then she had Eve St. Laurent pumps on.

3:53 I love these shoes. Are they swayed? Kind of, or are they And like, OK, they're swayed in their platform. And I think she had a couple of pairs that she wore around this time, and I just love them. I got like knockoff versions that are not nearly as cute as these. Oh cool. And. The last thing is her hair. Yeah, it's just long and like ombre, which was like really popular at that time. I guess it still is. I feel like she was like the poster girl for ombre hair at this time. Oh. My God, her hair looks so good and she has little braids in it.

4:25 I love this year of her style. She was working with the stylist Anda and Masha a lot at that time. I don't know if they did this exact look, but I think they probably did. And they were just so like they were so fun. Everything she wore that year, I would love to like just feature that year in fashion. Yeah, and this dress. I would like, absolutely wear this. It has like a modesty while like showing off her legs. Like, it's so, so good. Cute. It's so cute. And the bell also like, accentuates her waist.

4:55 It's just like a it's just such a cute look. Okay. So let's mention the fact that we have first hand story of this event because our wonderful friend Katie was there for this. I guess she had won tickets and was able to go and I asked her if she could send in a little story for us. So we had to chop it down a little bit. This is what Katie recalls. It was so much fun as I took my sister and it was one of the first fancy events we did together. I got my nails done in my favorite shade and it completely matched the blue carpet they had at the premiere.

5:27 I love that. Cool. Yeah. And then, she said. We saw Drew on the carpet with Chris Miller looking very sharply, dressed in a Plaid suit, who was taking her around by hand. And I love this last line because we always say this. She just looked so tiny in real life. Yeah, it's so true. And the crazy thing was, at the end of the event, Katie asked for these, like, big poster board posters, for lack of a better word, that they had on, like, the barriers there. And then she freaking flew them here the first time she met us.

6:00 Yes, and surprised us with them. It was incredible. That's Katie for you. Yeah. So Katie, we've, I think we've mentioned her many times, but we'll never stop, you know, like preaching her praises. Is that is that a right phrase? Sure. I like. It so thank you Katie for sharing that. This is a great poll. I'm so glad to go back over this and just look at how beautiful Miss Drew looks. I forgot about the braids, but that just is so good. Is so good. Oh my God. All right. Thank you, Drew, for blessing us with your presence.

6:36 OK. So what's new with Drew? This is exciting. This is exciting. I love when this happens, when you just wake up one morning and you find out there's a new magazine cover feature. So we learned that Drew is on the cover of the September issue of Better Homes and Gardens. It's their style Makers issue, which is cool because she loves being like a designer and a style maker and all that stuff. It's right up her alley. Yes, I'm sure she was honored by that. I think she is. Yeah. I think she might have even said that in one of the behind the scenes videos.

7:13 Cool. Let me run down some credits real quick. The photos are by Justin Quait. The hair is by the wonderful Mr. Daniel Howell, of course. Makeup is by Lauren Lazaro Galino, and she does choose makeup for the Drew Barrymore Show, among other things. And then the manicure is by a woman named Elle Gerstein. Great name and I love her IG handle. I'm going to shout it out. It's enamel. So enamel, she said. Manicures. How good is that? That is so clever, I know, but I she like followed us and started liking a bunch of our pictures and so I was like maybe I can ask her about the shoot.

7:52 So I reached out and she said I asked her if Drew chose like the nail Polish color and Elle said I just jumped in and picked because she was busy planning looks etc. I put a Dior shade on her and when she looked, she finally said. OMG, so pretty. Love it? Yeah, fun little tidbit. Very cool. I'm glad you reached out. Yeah, the article was done by Jenny Comida. I have not had a chance to read it. So are there any highlights from it that you want to mention? Um, you know what, the only thing that I pulled?

8:22 Well, first of all, I think there's a mistake in the beginning. I'm going to mention it because I'm a pain like that. So it starts by like saying, like when her house burned down, she bought this house in Montecito. And I'm like, no, she didn't have the Montecito house until like 10 years later when she was as well. So I think there was just like some confusion because they're talking about the and it's clearly her LA like Hollywood Hills house got it just. Had to put that out there and then I did pull this quote from.

8:52 There's a little side feature. I don't know like how this works in the actual magazine, but online this is separate. So we'll link to both of them. It's called House Rules with Drew Barrymore, and I just love this because this totally is one of our favorite parts of every article we've ever covered on the show. So she said whenever I'm with my girls, I feel like I'm at home, even if we're at a restaurant. I pour out the contents of my bag and then she lists some stuff. My camera, my crossword puzzle, my lip balm, my book, a deck of cards.

9:24 And we're right at home, so we love Drew pouring out her bag. It's like just one of those things that we love. So I thought that was so fun that she mentioned that. I love that so much. There was a kind of a long video of her talking. Did you watch that? I don't think I saw that. Okay. So there is a 4 minute video on the Better Homes and Gardens website for this and she is like has her backpack next to her, talks about how she's obsessed with her Jansport backpack and then she also talks about yes, which I know you said you like has spotted on the show.

She's been talking about wearing a Jan Sports since the early days of Flower films because she would say that her and Nancy would go into meetings and everyone would have their briefcases and they would be there with their Jansport backpacks. One thing I thought was funny and I just said something like I'm not about labels. And I was like, in my mind, I'm like Jan Sports a label. I know she, I know she she means design Nancy labels. Yes, of course. But it's a really sweet video, definitely worth checking out.

10:25 I will say there's another video on social media. And in it, she, like, just casually, is promoting a new side table by beautiful. It's so casual that I was like. Did she just so little? It's a beautiful table. Or not. I'm not. Even Sure, I rewatched it to make sure and it's and it's also like that she doesn't mention it in this other video, but it's like next to her in it. And I feel like I absolutely need this. I've always already feeling this way about the chair in the Ottoman, as you all know, so I can't wait to see you like when we see pictures of her.

10:58 With that, because clearly, remember we were joking last episode. I was like, what else are they going to trickle out like? So here we go, Yeah. So let's let's talk about the photos a little bit. They're so great. They're really, really cute. I'm so impressed. Like, I love the cover, even though I'm not crazy about what she's wearing. Like somehow it works. I love what she's wearing. Yeah, it just like works. Like, I wouldn't look at it and think, yes, wear this, but I don't know how It's fun. The colors are working so good for her.

11:26 She's got this like purple and kind of sea foam green and like, what would you call those pants? They're like fuchsia Gumby pants, no, but beyond. Beyond them being Gumby pants, it's not as bright as fuchsia, but like a darker pink. Yeah, but it's it's really cute. I love I and I don't know what order they're in in the magazine or anything, but there's one where she's. Spinning around in a dress that looks like it has like a Renaissance painting on it. Yeah, very cool. And she's got like a silk shirt with a black tie, a white silk shirt with a black tie.

12:00 It's really cute. And what makes it so fun is she's like spinning around. So the dress is sort of flying in the air and it's cute. You can tell she's being playful. Yeah, these are very fun. I will say that my favorite one is her profile. Oh yeah, that one's beautiful. One of the things that's so cool about it not only is her profile, but her tattoos. Like it's such a good picture of her breathe tattoo and two of the three sardines are visible. Two of the three sardines, I love that. Yes, I believe it said it comes out on news stands on August 18th.

We wanted to talk about, first of all, our most popular episodes and our least popular episodes, and maybe ruminate on why. Yes. So let's hear what our most popular episodes are. OK, I'm going to do the top five and we'll start with the 5th and go up to #1. Sounds great. All right. So #5 is when we covered Details magazine from 1993. I'm actually surprised that this is our most popular magazine episode. Me too. But I'm happy about it.

13:43 It's cool. It's a great one. But it's not like one of the ones that I think was on our initial list. Like it didn't come to mind easily. We thought of it later. Do you even remember why we chose it? I think I was just giving and there was like, this is a great article, we should do this one. But yeah, that's great. I'm so happy people like that one. So that's number five. Yes, #4 is never been kissed, which totally get that. I'm very happy because that was one of our biggest project ones I think.

14:13 I think so too. And that was also of the film ones that are mentioned here, that's the most recent and it's like almost caught up with the other two movie ones. Yeah, that's pretty cool. I mean, that's really cool, that one. We did do a lot of extra stuff on that one because we had two guests. We had lots of clips. We'll talk a little bit later about ones that we're like, super proud of in that way. But anyway, so yeah, so it's close to the other two films. That was a really fun episode. I'm happy people have listened.

14:41 We don't. I was going to say I'm happy. People have loved it. We don't know if they've loved it, listened and hated it. Yes, exactly. #3 is Mad Love, which is another episode we are so proud of. That was really good. I I remember feeling like I think this one's gonna do well. And sure enough. And when we when we did it, it was like a feeling of like are we ready? Yeah, cuz we knew it was gonna be a big. And like we just love it so much. We have like such a tender place in our heart for it. So if if you're listening and you haven't listened to that one, please do.

15:14 It is pretty funny. I've heard two other podcasts recently mentioned Mad Love and how it's just, like, not a very good movie. Like, well, our listeners love it. Well, also I one other thing that's unique about that episode, if you haven't listened is that Ashley has a copy of like the working script or like an early version of the script that has a lot of things that were deleted out of the film. So we we talked about that, which is so neat, truly, both are Never Been Kissed and our Mad Love episodes.

15:40 And the next one I'm going to mention they all have extremely exclusive content and then that you're not going to hear anybody anywhere else. So you know. That's pretty cool. I'm going to give myself an extra. On the back for being part of this. Yeah, OK #2, and this was not a surprise to me at all. It's our Scream episode, which was really my labor of love, that one. And I knew that one was going to be really popular too, because I'm part of the screen fan base and I know how many people are in it, so.

16:10 Yeah, I love that so much. That episode. We had a lot of fun with that one. I don't think we were doing sound clips at that point. I know. Interestingly, which it's. Okay, because it's such a small part of the film, we would just been basically playing her whole part, probably Okay, sit down for 12 minutes and listen. Up. Yes, I forgot it was 12 minutes. Thank you, Ashley. That one's, of course, unique. That was one of the first times we had a guest on the podcast because we interviewed. We'll talk about a little bit later, but we interviewed one of the stuntmen who played Ghost Face.

So that was a biggie, and I'm happy that it's still thriving And then way out, far ahead of the pack, our very number one most listened to episode happens to be our first episode. Yes. And that's what we COVID-19, 98 a year in review. But it was just the part one of that. And I think it makes sense. First episode, like, if you're listening to a podcast, a lot of people, I think go and scroll and let's start to the first one. Yeah. Which is kind of like, I wouldn't want to listen to that now.

17:12 I feel like there I would hear things. I'd be like, oh God. I'm a little afraid. I mean, there's a couple things like it's our first one. So it was the first time literally I came into this editing our podcast as if I knew like what gall do I have, right. Hey, but also I feel like I'm doing well now, but I think I would tringe a little bit. But like at that point we were recording like 1 audio file. So anytime we talked over each other, it's just in there like so just so you know like if you if you haven't listened to and you go back like.

17:42 We've gotten, I think, a little more refined. It's every podcast though, if you go back and listen to the first one, like it's a little rough. Yeah, always. Yeah. But also the one other thing I want to say is that we basically after that decided like try not to do 2 parters. And I did we do whip it as a 2 parter. And that was the last time And actually, let's get into that. So let's talk about our least popular episode. Yes. Here we go. OK, so the third least popular is the guest campaign. And I'm.

18:11 Sort of surprised by that. I I thought that one was going to do better than it did. I'm surprised as well because this was such a beloved campaign, but maybe people thought it was going to be boring to hear us talk about it. I have no idea. Maybe. But we had so much great like behind the scenes info. So if you haven't listened to it, if you think it's just us talking about the photos, it's way more than that. Like we have all kinds of great like details about, you know, Drew getting the campaign and what it was like to do it and how it like, came out and was popular.

18:41 Like, it's a very nice robust topic, so go listen to it. Please go check that one out. And also, who doesn't love that guest campaign? Come on, Oh my gosh, okay. Our second least popular episode is a Part 2, and it's the Whippet episode Part 2. And it's very strange to me, like there's a huge chasm between the listens of part one and then Part 2. So that's sort of when we decided, OK, no more part twos cuz people aren't coming back for the second ones or whatever. Yeah. So yeah, we kind of stopped that.

19:11 That's also, I'm proud of that one too. I think we did do sound clips on that one. If you did soundtracks like. Yes. OK. That one was so fun because I put a lot of sound clips in that one of songs that are on the soundtrack, so that was a lot of fun, but yeah. Once again, we won't do Part 2, so we'll just let the episodes be really long. Yeah, we don't mind. Sorry, but also you're welcome. OK, So what else? And then our last least popular episode, And this one bumps us out, so if you haven't listened, go listen.

19:42 Our least popular episode is the one about Flossy and all of Drew's other pets, and I love that episode, even though we screwed up about Vinny the cat. And I'll never, like, forgive myself. But regardless of that, like it's a really sweet episode. I feel like I always envision if Drew is when Drew finds out about the podcast that she'll see that one and like that would be the first one she would listen to. Sing you man. Like And if I saw another podcast doing an epic, I mean, OK, maybe it's too niche.

And I'd be like, I have to see what they're gonna say. But maybe that's just a super fan thing. So much of it comes from like you're noggin. That to me was one of the most research heavy, even though a lot of that is in my brain. As Anne said, like I really spent time being incredibly thorough and I only we only talked about the opening scene, Drew scene. We didn't even get into the movie. That would be a whole a whole different thing.

21:34 But yeah, that one was a labor of love for me. As I said, yes. Other episodes that we're proud of or that took a lot of work, we kind of mentioned briefly earlier, Mad Love. Similarly with Never Been Kissed, lots of like audio clips and music and Mad Love, I think, particularly. But both of those were really proud of. I'm glad that we did them and spent the time to do them because now they're in our first 50 roster, which is kind of really fun. 29:06 We have, last I looked, over 817,000 views on it, she says. I remember that day like opening Instagram and it was just like every. 3 seconds somebody else was liking it. One thing I do remember though is that there were some people being a little bit rude about it and I think we might have like either turned off comments or there was wasn't there like kind of some reactions that we were a little bit like? Yeah, we had to turn off the comments and actually another account that we follow, a good one that's called 90s Girlfriends.

29:36 They posted something of it recently too. And that account also had some comments that I was like, yeah, this is the same, like just to judgy, a judgy tone I didn't like, Yeah. And then on our TikTok. We had the mad love wave clip, which I love that one, and that one has over 670,000 views over there. Wow, so weird. I know that one. Surprised me because I just sort of assumed the TikTok demographic is like much younger people. But we were flooded with comments of people having major nostalgia for the movie and talking about how they, like, modeled their whole persona after Casey back then and like.

30:19 The comments on that one are amazing. That's right, because that was one of the things that pulled it. We had so many follow-ups after mad love of people like talking about that episode. Oh, that's right. We did read some of them. That's right, I forgot. Great job Ashley, making a couple of little viral videos happen. For us, I know. So you just never know what it's like. The more popular it gets, the more popular it gets. It just takes on a life of its own. And it's like such a crapshoot. But this whole thing is a crap shoot.

30:45 Like, why is nobody listening to our, like, guest campaign episode? Thank you. Let's talk a little bit about the guests we've had, because this is a fun thing to kind of celebrate. We had so much fun, like over the first dozen episodes, we had like a chunk of guests. So we were like, what is our right? Now and then we had a weird drought, but we're back on track. So our very first guest ever was a Scream stuntman Lee Waddell. He was Ghostface and Drew's scene, so that was really cool.
