022 – Ever After

1:03 Okay. But before we get into the topic, which is going to be exciting, I feel one follow-up from last week. Do you remember? We were discussing. We were like, oh how many People magazine covers? So she actually been on us. Yes. So I counted based on our files and I come up with 12, which is a wide, it is. I think we guessed around 10 though. I was thinking at least 10 cool but that's that's like not a small amount, it's not. And I started to think about it too. And I was realizing that I had sort of forgot about some of the newer ones need to accept the fact that she had been on in the last few years.

1:40 I was like her face is on there. Yeah. I pulled all the pictures so that like maybe I can just do like one graphic and put it up in the episode page. Yeah, I think you I don't know if you remember. I sent you a little screenshot I'm like the last Reissues. She's like doing the same exact purpose kind of weird. Yeah people like as their mind made up we want her touching her face on the cover. That's really cool about mean 12 is like that's impressive, I would imagine. That's the most like I remember in style.

2:14 She like definitely hit a record with but I don't think it was anywhere close to 12. Like I don't think there's been another magazine that's been that many. That is cool to think about. All right, well moving on. This account team people, it's even more. Oh, your favorite two people realize the teen version of people. Okay? So who sent us an e-mail this week? If anyone, that's all we got a really nice comment that I thought was really fun and this is from Jen and she identified herself as Jennifer, Allison from the Grapevine.

2:49 Do you remember that name? I vaguely remember. Yeah, me too. It's like, it's like a familiar. It's not like, oh yeah, I remember exactly mmm that person. But I like red when I saw the name was like, that's very familiar. Yep. So she left a really fun. Comment, cool. I'll go ahead and read it. So she said, the Grapevine, thanks for the flashback. My Drew be besties, were Missy and Anita. All these years later, I still wonder how they're doing. But, yeah, trying to explain to my parents that I was nailing, small gifts, and Drew stuff distributors in the internet.

3:22 Allah, I just found this podcast. I will have to catch Trap Overjoyed to see y'all still pumping out the Drew content. That's awesome. But that, that makes me so happy. I like everything about it. Yeah, it's like that, that sums it all up, right? The Nostalgia, totally. I love that. And I it's funny to not be able to remember Saudi somebody because at this point I'm like, I feel like I still have been touched but I'm like, no, no. That wasn't just like 10 of us. It was like, right. Good number of people like 35, that's so cool.

This kind of portrays like, what exactly were talking about the previous episode, exactly. Okay. Drew ISM of the week. You know, those cool little isms that we do. I pulled a good one. I like this one.

I'll talk more about it in a bit, okay? Okay, so here's another little Drew is mm. I'm just this person, this being this little entity in tupperware this Soul inside this body. The little entity in tupperware was why I was like yep. Hilarious. Yeah. It reminded me of I don't I know you don't remember it but when she was on the Martin A short show in 1999 and talk about being Paparazzi when she was changing clothes and she said, like, I'm just like a person in a space suit, like something like that, which is perfect.

5:08 Yeah, this is so cute. And I think the other thing, I don't know if we've said many times, but like usually there's an image that comes along with her Drew isms. Like it's like right away, you can like picture. So I'm like literally picturing a tiny Drew inside of the guitar for where container great. This is why we need an animator on staff. Yes, absolutely. Absolutely. You know, and of in the future when we're huge podcast will have to make sure what we refer back to this one to get an extradition good call noted, okay?

5:38 Okay, this week in true history is a really good one. I looked at the date that we're going to be airing this which is January 17th and back in 2010. That was the year of the Golden Globes that was date. The go to clubs which is crazy that that was 12 years ago because it feels incredibly recent in my mind. Yeah, totally. So I did a little write-up of just kind of the details about that. Wait, is it 13 years ago? Oh, you're right. Oh my gosh. Yes, we had again, we're, you know, we're not mathematicians is not a math podcast or just speaking.

6:15 It's 2022. I guess, I know, I know why. So, 13 years ago, Golden Gloves, you want to tell me what happened. Yeah. So as you know, Israel won best actress in a limited series, Anthology series or television motion picture. She beat out her co-star. Jessica Lange, who had previously won the Emmy against Drew. So, it's kind of cool that they both walked away with one of the big ones Grey Gardens, which is the movie. It was for obviously, it also won best film in that same category, which I forgot. Yeah, me too.

6:50 Except there's the pictures with them, the director and they're both holding their goal. The gloves. So that's what he's got. That poor. So she attended with Justin long and she wore what she's often said was like her all-time favorite gown and that was in a Tilly a Versace. I hope I'm saying that right to know if that's how you say it. Yeah. Until until. Yeah that's like the house of her Saatchi. Yeah. Yeah. Then she had that huge ring that almost looked like a globe. Do you remember that? It's like a yes would fall, right?

7:23 Yeah. Watched her acceptance speech. And yeah I forgot she's like really nervous in it. Like most nervous I've ever seen her. Maybe. Wow, I don't remember it. Yeah you should watch it again. I'll put a link of episode page but she think Michael Susie the director for in her words taking a chance on her even though she could have come across like Jeff, Spicoli his girlfriend. 8:00 Her voice coach, and everyone in the room because she's grown up there. And they were her family and then Nancy. And Chris, of course, Nancy devoted, and Chris Miller. So yeah, it's cute. It was fun to see that again, and I just love that. Look, I love everything about that. Was so amazing and exciting. It's really cool to have her had been honored that way. Yeah, so that's a great, great throwback for this week and Drew his Fine, I love this new little segment. We've got ya, hopefully like there's something every week.

8:31 Like I don't beautiful come across a week where we're like, well shit there's nothing so so what's new with Drew? So like I said she did the best friend energy podcast and that is with the ladies who are from the home edit, okay? And I actually had forgotten that she did, their Netflix show, which is called getting organized with the home edit. Oh, I don't think I ever even saw that. Yeah, I hadn't either. Either. Okay, so they came and did the prep kitchen at the Drew Barrymore show? Got that organized.

9:02 Oh, cool. And so, I finally, after I listened to the podcast, this is just a little sidebar. I was like oh I should probably go watch that. Hello, so she's at season to her segments of the end of episode 1 and the beginning of episode 2. And it's really, it's really cute. And they did a great job on the kitchen and it's fun to see like at the set of the show and like, all A beautiful cookware everywhere and system. Yeah, it's great. Super cool. But anyway, as far as the podcast goes mostly I would say it's all like, kind of same old, same old that we've heard before.

9:38 The only thing I felt was like, notable was she told the school story about basically but her and we'll take the girls to go. Get Mom's Christmas tree, and dad's Christmas tree every year, huh? Which I was like, but he's Jewish. So that's interesting. But yeah, So they went, I think she said just this past year, she noticed she realized when they got to the tree lot, but they were right outside the old apartment that she like stayed in when they first split up by herself and was super lonely and depressed.

10:10 And so she like, made everybody take a picture like in front of it, and it was sort of her reminder. There are self, like, no matter how bad things get, like, you will come out of it, things will get better and I thought that was just really cool like, such a great I like story. That's really sweet. Every time we play like these pot things pop up. I'm kind of like we don't have ever we don't like have all of her stories, you know? Like I just it just starts to like make you realize that there's so much more depth to her even though she's so open.

10:41 Like I know. Well she was explaining that she and will were basically trying this thing. She called it nesting which it sounds like the opposite of nesting to me. But we're when they first split up, like they would just switch off. Like, who was staying at their place. Ace. So when she wasn't staying there she was at this apartment that were, she was all depressed. My God. Yeah. I know so chaotic, not really. I also started to think you were going to say the apartment that she lived in that we've like ya know that she still has now as kind of like a another place where like they were all this stuff I started to wonder if it was that apartment in New York.

11:20 No. Because she says she's like renting it from she was renting it from some lady like it, okay? So, who knows what? Maybe she had sold that one like just prior something. I don't know. Interesting. Now that's yeah. Be on Drew's News podcast this week, she has Ross's the guest again, so that's always great. Like, there's something about when it's the to them. That just feels a little more like comfortable and natural, and like just super like hilarious. Like, again, I was laughing the whole time, they're digital story about on-screen kisses.

11:50 So Ross was trying to ask her like who was the best onscreen kiss? Of course, she like doesn't have like a real answer, but yeah, I was actually like, kind of surprised and impressed she was pulling out like, she's like, oh, I've gotten to do that with so many amazing men. And she like started listing, I mean she was pulling up some, like, kind of random oldie ones that I wouldn't have thought of right away like McConaughey and Edward Norton and I don't know it just like I always get a little thrill when she mentioned something like older for some.

12:18 Yeah. And then she kind of like her hospitable answer was like, well I was dating Luke Wilson. And just along when I did movies with them. So like that was obviously the most comfortable. Yeah, that was kind of answer, but it was fun to hear her like mentioning all these names. I was like, oh, this is fun to hear her. Go back through them all. Yeah, totally. That's really, that's really kind of a funny topic because she's had so many because it was, like, she's been kind of this, like, romantically did many things, or at least always was like, a girlfriend or something like that.

12:52 You know, I was like attached to somebody. D. So she's like many times seen in that situation. I know just makes me think of how strange of a job that is. Yeah and she talks about that like how it's so like awkward and like it's not sexy or romantic at all. So that's been good. Listen to that, that's good. Then the last note I just have I don't know when this is going to happen like when this will are but like speaking of past kissing partner, Corey Feldman, just filmed a little some sort of segments on the Drew Barrymore show.

13:25 So, I got to say, if I was going to pick, like, one of the least, likely X's for her to have on it would probably be him. Absolutely. Just very random and I feel like it could go so many ways. Like, what is the vibe going to be of that? And also I also wouldn't be surprised if they don't. Well, I can't really take. That's because I'm definitely don't talk about the fact that they dated, like if they're just, like, we're old friends. But no, I think they'll talk about the fact that they dated. Yeah, you're right.

13:53 I could tell it was a pretty tumultuous. Which was part of their life. So it could be a really like, wonderful deep conversation. It could be like, very shallow and quick it could, I know that's where I'm like, which one could be promoting something it that takes over, you know, I think he is, but I'm like, man, I feel like they could go real deep if ya wanted to. So, he was there for. Like, I would say, probably, I would say the hardest part of her life, but I would, she would probably say now it's like a cur divorces.

14:23 Well, yeah, but Huge part of her, like, major growth as it is. And, you know, he has the whole child star baggage to so. Yeah. It's going to be interesting. I can't like interested. Yeah, I looked at next week's, schedule for the show and don't see his name on any of those episodes. So, I was actually really surprised that the show's Instagram posted a picture of them already was on the schedule. Yeah, usually they wait and it's like, you know, they filmed it. Like 3 months ahead ahead of time, so we'll keep you guys posted about that.

14:55 At. Yeah, cool. That about wraps it up. Cool. All right. So I'm super excited about this topic. I know you are too. So let's get into it. I am and I'm like this one of a little nervous about doing it justice. Because it's a big one. Yeah, it was funny when we were trying to pick this, Back. It was like, what are we done? Like, we've kind of done some big stuff, but like, there's a lot of big stuff we could do. Like, are we ready to tackle? One of the things that's like, very near and dear to us, you know?

15:36 Yeah, and not only that, but like, all of the movies we've done so far. I've been like, she's sort of had a smaller heart in it in a way, you know, we did Whip-It, which she dances, she obviously directed the whole thing. So that's huge. But her role as small acting-wise cream. Same. And then Olive like it, It's not even on your face on screen. Yeah. So we're like we need to do whatever like major, starring roles. Yep. So we decided on Ever After Cinderella Story 1998 Classics from the first year that we were really fans and Earnest as we've talked about, this is so funny.

16:15 I took a note on this because I thought it was so cute because Jason was kind of asking me about it, like, do you. I remember going to see it and all that stuff. Yeah. And I was like, yeah, it's Actually the first movie I like went to see because of her, you know. And he was like oh, so the fairytale of your Drew, be ism is all started with Cinderella. Yeah. Basically it's also definitely, I think I said this in the last podcast, like definitely the first thing I consciously went to see as a fan.

16:45 Yeah, you did say those are cool. Yeah. So yeah. Should we start going through it? I feel like I probably could have gone deeper on the research. Yeah, but I feel like we're gonna Cover a lot of stuff. So hopefully we're not missing anything. Big. Feel free to send us a message. I think she would consider it her favorite and she had said it was such a calling to me in my heart and soul, I had to do it. So like this is a really probably the most near and dear to her heart. I would say. Yeah. And the way that she talked about at that time she was it clearly like meant a lot for her to play this role. Oh, absolutely strong.

17:46 Lady young lady character. So Drew had heard about the project wild to premiere of everyone says, I love you and You've quoted that she was going nuts for a month hoping. She'd get the part. Yeah. Is there any information about like the process of auditioning or what she owes Trinity and not enough? I don't think I would imagine she probably did not have to audition. I. Okay. Probably just like, you know, was like, I want this project and hoped that they would listen to her over it Max. You may not.

18:20 I'm just wondering if it was like offered, you know, like it was just yeah, here's an offer. The table but like how it like, I don't know, going nuts room and taking picture just being like this, could be my big break like not. It's interesting to think about this. I mean, obviously should be doing big thumbs and we've talked about 1998, or I guess 97. When she was like, filming these things is like a really, really, really big year for her. So her having like they pushed for projects that, that meant a lot to her.

18:47 Like, I don't know, it just shows her kind of wherewithal. I'm just, I'm so curious how it all. Like, I don't know. Okay. Yeah. And you know, that you've got me thinking because she would have found out about this before, she even filmed The Wedding Singer. So it's not like The Wedding Singer come out. And she was now a proven box office draw. Okay, right. So, you're right like it is kind of interesting, like, she still had, it had like a big hit. That was based solely on her. Yeah, so maybe she did have to audition, I don't know.

19:18 I would love to know that. Yeah, that'd be really cool. If anyone hasn't answered site, anyone has around. And tapes like we'll just just died. I see that. Come on. That's just for anything any movie. Yeah, but yeah. So she felt like she was getting Typecast in the bad girl rolls, of course. And she thought that this would be a good way to show that she could be, like, a young woman of substance and how yeah, it definitely is that turning point in her career, like I don't feel like she really did anything bad girlish after this ever again.

19:51 But know, when you think about how young she Actually was, I know it's a trap because I think you know when it being fans of this time it's like we were like she's a grownup. She's been through a lot. Yeah, makes sense. But then it's like what if she 22 when she finds this right? Yeah. It's so young, like, to me. Now, if I see somebody's 22, I'm like, oh, they're up baby, you know, like it just feels like they're still going through. It is like, just think of how much at what what she'd been through it before, 22.

20:20 It's just like so cool. So she said about doing ever after that. This was hard for me, scary because I wanted to abolish the cliches yet still have a magical fairy tale. They set out to make a beautiful movie. I didn't want to be a blonde Cinderella who had her bosoms out. Let's just bug dusting the fireplace and like that was, I actually am realizing. Maybe now that like, Okay, so this ever after was 1998, she's feeling this, like I really want to be like a badass, it has such a feminist undertone.

20:51 And then when you compare that to Charlie's Angels, like yeah, Just thinking about like okay, she was this like badass and then she was like, okay, I want to be a badass again, like a couple years later, you know. Oh yeah. I want to do these films that show how capable women can be and like, it's, it's now it almost feels like, why would you have to do that? Obviously, we're still fighting. You know what? It's like. It's like this wonderful thing that to have those. This woman that we love so much to be part of like doing this kind of work like how cool.

21:19 Yeah and I do remember I couldn't find the source for this but I do remember knowing that she like fought to be a brunette. Cinderella. I like yeah you know she'd been blond for so long. I'm sure the studio wanted her blond and she was like now we're going to kind of going to take us to make it a little different. Yep. And that's funny to think about too because when we think about her Drew's hair like how her hair changed for when they need the movie. I mean I guess this is kind of an interesting topic.

21:46 I don't know if you want to talk about her. Look more later. Yeah, I do have some notes for that later about cancer so we'll get into it more later. But it's just when I think about like Drew Drew and how her hair changed like that year, literally for this. It wasn't last time. Yeah, it was like you know it wasn't like she felt as a person more comfortable like you said she'd been blond so kind of neat so she is often stated that she loves that. Not only does her character not wait to be rescued but she goes out and rescues others.

22:12 So, in the film, like one of the first instances of that as she goes out and like retrieves this Servant the husband of one of the other servants. Like she literally goes out and says, like, I've got this money, you gotta watch the movie. But like that's the first thing she thinks to do is like going, right? Like rescue someone who's been a server and along basically alongside her entire life. It seems like she's like, okay, I'm gonna do this and then makes an amazing speech about, you know, they're just human basically.

22:43 Yeah. How cool is that? I know, and I love, like she said that so many times about the, like, going on, rescuing others, and I just think that really spoke to her. She actually said about her character. Danielle, she's so amazing. And loyal and Fierce and not afraid. If she is fearful, she overcomes that, I just admire her so much for that, and she's just said so many times, like the playing that character changed her life, like she admired her so much. Oh yeah, this is a side note, and have you watched the show in with Annie?

23:16 No, I haven't even heard of that. Well, it's not you, it's me but it's actually And of Green Gables? Oh, yes. I have heard of it. Okay, so I think it's on Netflix. But the reason I am thinking about this is because like, I don't know if you know the character and of Green Gables but she is like because somebody who was orphaned and then is basically like incredibly smart and like likes to get dirty and doesn't mind like showing that she's a strong woman. So when I was watching ever after I was thinking about like oh this character reminds me of Anne of Green Gables.

23:51 Oh yeah. I can see a lot of similarities there. Yeah, and I hadn't thought about it before until I was like, re-watching and I was like, oh this is so cool. I've been watching and with an e and now you're watching Danielle with any that's correct. That is correct. So moving on she also loved that the stepmother isn't just pure evil and you learn why she is the way she is. And then you also get to know who the princes and what his struggles were and then plus that he falls in love with her heart and mind rather than at First Sight sight.

24:20 I mean, those are all like the things that she really liked about the retelling of the story. Like you're not just getting these shallow this lady's evil and this is the prince that she's in love with, for no reason. Why. Yeah, you learn you know, there's more to it. There's depth, it makes sense. Yep. The one seen that stands out to me just in reference to this Anjelica Huston says to her something about her having her father's eyes. Yeah. And that she like you suddenly kind of get this Softness from that, that stepmother character for the first time and then she says, well, your features are so masculine.

24:57 I know that's actually one of my favorite scenes because it's definitely like pretty much the only time that you really see vulnerability aside from when the father dies from the stepmother character whose name is rodmilla. But I always forget that because they don't really see it that often. Yeah, but yeah, she's definitely like a little more soft towards Danielle and that scene than she ever is. And she's Like saying it's a shame, you didn't know your mother. There must be some of her in you. And that is almost like she catches herself.

25:27 Yeah, and she's like em, anyway. You're like get out of here like a way that, it's really fascinating. Okay. So Drew brought the project to director. Andy tenant who had randomly enough directed her in the Amy Fisher story. It's so funny to me like why did she think of him? You know like those projects couldn't be more. Just similar absolutely or what, maybe they just had a great working relationship and she thought of him, but he also got like a writing credit on the screenplay. So when he came on board, he took a little something with that too.

26:05 Okay, cool. And he said, I have a quote from him. That says our version, says, Cinderella's magic comes from within not from some little lady with a wand. So again, it's like just kind of same of the same ideas and themes of why. Drew was so drawn to this, Project. And why it still means so much to her. Yeah, so cool. And and really interesting, I wouldn't I wouldn't think that she would have had, like, one of her best experiences with the name and character of Amy Fisher. You know, that was a reason.

26:37 Like, I feel like I do 70 times Drew likes to work with people who she believes in. And if you want that, she brings them back as not just, it's not like a like there's not a reason for it, right? So kind of cool. Yeah, baby. That more. Okay, so speaking of Anjelica Huston, so everyone at Fox, the writer is and everyone. They all wanted Anjelica Huston and I guess it came down to a phone call that Drew made I guess to her like. Yeah amazing. And one of the convincing sort of points there was that I guess Druid said we'd have the Barrymore Houston combo to pay tribute to their famous acting families which is so cool and tongue, of course, that would tug on either of them.

27:20 Hardest right? You know, which is so cool. And actually I was curious I haven't really looked but to see if a Barrymore or Houston had worked together before this. Yeah, I didn't like go deep but I just saw and like IMDb trivia can of course be wrong. And I probably should have verified but I didn T it it looks like John Huston had directed a few of her family like maybe John and Lionel cool thing. So that is like pretty special to have that totally and You didn't have very many opportunities to kind of tap into the famous acting part of her, you know.

27:56 Like yeah. So to have to have some way to, I don't know. I feel like it would have been really special to her to be like, oh my family worked with, you know, your family. But that would be a huge. Wonderful draw and a bonus, I should say it. Also cracks me up that this is kind of exactly how she got. Cameron Diaz. Signed up for Charlie's Angels to is like a phone. Call that she made where she convinced her. This is going to be amazing. See ya. She's soaked persuasive. Absolutely, I couldn't say that or no.

28:28 Okay, so they filmed in sarlat which is in the south of France. I think it was mostly fall of 1997. I think might have been summer to. I should have also double checked on that. I wasn't really trying to get these notes like out of my head and into the page. Yeah. But 1997. And yeah, we're just a couple notes on like some of the things that As they were filming that, I took care of our gathering from a few sources. So one of the things about like filming and France is that they, you know, of course they had like, probably local crew and all that.

29:02 And Drew personally, I guess supplemented the meager craft service table, which is like kind of their catering with fresh fruit and sandwiches, which how cute is that? I know, but this reminds me of a story. I had an acquaintance, a friend of my cousins who were It withdrew in some capacity. I can't remember what on Santa Clarita diet and he said, that more than once Drew would bring in special catering. Like one of the time she brought in like on her own dime brought in sushi for service which is like not you know usually it's just kind of like trays of food or like things like bags you know bags of chips or something right.

29:42 But that she would like as kind of a thank you to the crew bring in special craft service. So I was like, oh, that's so cool to know, especially. She's been doing it for so long. Yeah, exactly. Like this is like not that was not new for her even though I never. I didn't remember this fact about Ever After, but I was but now I'm like, oh cool. This kind of a cool connection to yeah, from kind of a direct source so I love that. Yeah, she also tried to help create a connection between the cast by gifting everyone with the musical instrument.

30:12 So Drew apparently, told them where all the band were creating music. So this came from Melanie lynskey, this story and Melanie said that Drew gave her a bongo because she was the drumbeat of the movie. Oh yeah. I like I want to know. Everyone else's instruments. He talked about this just in one of the profiles. You read. Yeah. Something recent like it came up very recently, I'd be I've been paying attention to her because of yellow jackets, which okay that's it. So yeah, it's fun. Like she gets asked about Ever After quite a bit.

30:48 I love that. And just speaking of Melanie Ski. She's so wonderful in a smoothie so good. I know she's such a sweet presence and laughs very subtle. You know at first you're like you're not sure if she's like what her deal is Like You Can Tell She's a little downtrodden. But yeah, it like grows that she supports did Ellen. She gets a good ending to which is nice. Yeah, so lovely, speaking of Drew, and, and the crew, she threw a Halloween party for them. And we know that she loves throwing parties, I think, more than one she had Halloween, IDs at her house in Los Angeles.

31:23 Yeah. And then on the Full Throttle set, she did like a costume contest hates. Yeah, that's right. And it said that she kind of did her best to bring everyone together. Which that's so cool to again. Like but she's just so good at like creating a community. Yes, yeah, yeah. And she also learned sword fighting. She had a voice coach. And then she said she was already comfortable with horse writing. So like she really got to do. Out of, you know, preparation for this part. But so I will say that she, you know, I definitely see a lot of like snark about her accident in this.

32:01 Yeah, but I found it interesting thing where she said like she knows that she's a valley girl with modern mannerisms. Okay. And she wanted the Royal accent to still seem like her too. Okay, I was surprised to see that. I think it was a Nickelodeon magazine of all places. But if it was semi intentional, I think that changes things and changes the perception because I feel like people definitely, like, give her a hard time for it. Well, okay. So because I walk, I just watched this movie, I was realizing like, okay, speaking of the accent, they're supposed to be in France.

And then I kind of explained that that was like are they Italy? Lie. Like I started like but they're supposed to be in France. They stayed a couple times like we know was filmed there but then I was like, okay this is not like Yeah, this is not like a Martin Scorsese film, and this is about to try to be like, you know, that a movie that doesn't have intense preparation or perfect, perfect, accents like that.

33:10 It can't be a good film, but I think it was unconcerned with that, to a certain extent and I think it works. Yeah, I would agree. I don't remember seeing it in 1998 and being like, wow, her accents, not good. Or why do they have these like British accents? Like it just worked. So I think that's It's all we need to say about the accent. Yeah, it's acknowledged. Yeah, that's acknowledge. But it's like, it's just something that I think there's a certain genre of like, quote unquote period film that you just go like, okay.

That use like a big actor in American film, and have them speaking French, and then have it translated like that. Just doesn't make sense. And I was like, this is kind of like a film for young people, you know? So like some of Those things they just don't need to be explained. It's when you actually think about it. It's like, oh yeah. That's because it had to be palatable to the certain audience for of modern telling of Cinderella like, you know, just it makes sense.

Maybe there was like an there was like one interview where she had like a really interesting like unlike her shade of brown.

Was there a time even in its smallest measurement that you loved me at all? How can anyone love the purple in there? Shu Chien Angelica both had like a tearful moment and Drew thought about her own life and how much she needs to have that conversation with her own mother.

Like the part that you saw, it was really good. I liked it. I think you should watch the whole thing. I made my mom like play the beginning part where like she was a little girl, and that's like, where the dad died.

Yeah, there were lots of like magazines that she was featured on and promotion for this and it's a really exciting time. And as we mentioned before, it was early on in our Drew fandom. So we were really in it.

54:12 Yeah. And so the movie was actually released on July 31st 1998 in the US, which is funny because I always think of it as an August movie, but I guess it me to that's under the. I think it's because the magazines are all like, August states that might be it. Yeah, that would be bad. And I bet you, I bet you what I saw in August. I'm gonna actually I meant to do this earlier. I'm gonna go find my daily because I used to have a daily diary at this time. So I don't want Go find it. So I feel like I thought it was like a bigger hit than it actually was like, it definitely made way more than its budget.

54:48 So it was a total success, but it was never even like number one or two at the box office which was surprising to see. I'm not hugely surprised by that because it's it's I'm glad to hear that. It was a box like it was a hit because it made what, you know, more than its budget, which was always like the defining sort of thing. Yeah. But it's I'm not too surprised to hear because it's kind of not that. It's a Niche audience. But I don't think this movie is for everyone. Well, you know, so I'm not too surprised, but that's really cool.

55:16 Yeah, and the, besides what it did at the box office, it definitely was very well received by critics to, which it was really, you know, always lovely to see, true get positive reviews. Definitely. And we've noticed over the years that Roger Ebert was always really, really kind to Drew meaning, like he was always kind to her in his reviews. It's just about him. Like I think I think I recall you and I having a conversation a long time ago, about Ebert & Roeper and when they had the show that Roper was often like very hard on Drew.

Now, her Adult Career is safely launched, which it's like exactly what I think she wanted with this movie.

He said, here, as the little Cinder girl, she's able to At Last put aside her bedraggled losers and flour as a fresh young Beauty. She brings poignancy and Fire to the roll. Yeah, that's good, isn't it? That's so sweet. Yeah, like, I feel like that's, that's huge. Oh, I'm sure it meant a lot to her. I sort of wonder if, I mean, I feel like there were certain people in Hollywood including like, Steven Spielberg for obvious reasons that sort of felt like they wanted to like care for Drew.

And I wonder if Roger Ebert because he's, like, literally seen a grew up as he says, like had this sort of paternal feeling towards her Her and not, that's a reason to like give her good reviews. But like I don't know. There's something about this that feels like A father speaking about you know what I mean? Yeah, or somebody, I don't know. It's really sweet though. But I wanted to bring those up because I thought it was nice. Yeah, it was a big deal, you know, I just did because I don't remember reading this.

But before that, there was a Florence one. So they had a Premiere. And then the next night I believe they had it like a And I think Drew's look at that Gala is worth mentioning because yes you are that custom-made dress that was made of all the scarves. And it was also made by Ferragamo and apparently it was supposed to have like been flown to La so that she could do a fitting with it but it like never arrived.

So a couple of things that I don't remember if I noticed before, but I was watching this film and one thing I noticed is like, you know, I've always noticed this best friend character of hers.

I think I think hints may be intentional, but I would be super curious to know. It's something. I've never thought about one thing about that actor and I don't have his name. But did you know, he's He's a Harry Potter actor.

So he like he opens the door, you know, he's like I'm gonna be the man known to have no God or whatever he says. And then he also liked the ball is thrown in his honor. So if that ball happened, this wouldn't have move the story forward. So it's just kind of neat to think of how important like this. Italian painter character is to this movie about, you know, a woman coming of age or whatever we want to call it.

And I was like, you know, I don't remember and I dunno like the Cinderella story so I knew she wouldn't be in the beginning. But But even now I still love that moment. I just don't remember. Yeah, initially felt on that it probably excited either but I'm sure I'm sure I was wide-eyed and excited.

1:04:30 Then as I am now, another note I have is that I just love because we're talking about Melanie lynskey should have mentioned this earlier, but I just love the part where the prince comes to their house and she has the feather trying to like you know her sister has this beautiful brooch. She's like All right. She's like puts it behind your ear and then she's like, it's such good like subtle, physical comedy. She's so cute. It just love it, it's so good. The last thing I have before we kind of get to some of your notes is that I just love that scene where Drew brings Maurice back to the their home and yeah, like hugging and just like the way Drew looks when she's off to the side, like watching them, and she just feels really happy.

One other kind of fun thing that I don't know if I ever knew it but it's still kind of cool. Is the character Richard O'Brien who plays the super creepy monster lip you or who like the evil stepmother is like secretly selling stuff to him and then he ends up bringing it back and exchange for spoiler alert. But exchange for Drew. Yeah. And like in a very pervasive Be icky way.

But in Rocky Horror, he plays the character riffraff, like, he plays like a relatively small role in this but like an impactful role.

So I thought that was kind of neat. The other thing was, this is just a line that like, I know you love. And I loved. But something came became clear to me, when I was watching this with captions this time.

Yep I guess she was saying oh yeah, always thought she was saying I Daddy's chair like a like a like a dirty chair.

It's funny because we just thought she was saying like Shez with like a funny kind of accent, you know, that reminds me I had my sister Amanda. Like she did not believe this for years, the part of the ball where again ass Angelica Houston's delivery and she says bow before royalty, you insolent fraud. My sister swore up and down that she said, insolent Ford.

All right, what else you got? Just a couple of other scenes, I guess. We'll just one more. I, of course, this is like, I'm given but the scene of her carrying the prince. Yes. Yeah. And he says, you can take, whatever you can carry and like, then they all start cracking up and she's just like a total badass. It's like I love to having Mila watch that scene.

I love that that and then like, right before that, she had, just like, scaled the wall to try to see what direction they need to go. Yeah. Like she's just like back-to-back. Just showing how like she does not need. A man to do its to. Yeah, I do. Although that part does have my absolute least favorite line in the entire movie because it's just so cringy to me when she says, why is it that men will never stop to ask for directions?

1:09:25 I was just like, oh, oh God, I roll grown already. We can't be a perfect though. This is. So we both have a note on this next part. We the same note, because it's so good. So there's a point where it happens off screen, but Danielle hides her gown and her glass slippers because her stepsisters trying to steal them for the ball. Well, she does steal then that's right. And she hides them and she comes back and she's kind of like absolutely done with their shit by this point in the movie. Yeah. And she's asked, she's told to produce the Gown.

I would rather die a thousand deaths than to see my mother's dress on that selfish cow the weight. Her delivery of that, just like gets me on a real emotional level like, it's oh, yeah. 8 plus true. And it's also like it says so much about what's happening with the character that point that she's just like you are not even worthy like my My attention, let alone the things that are like valuable to me like I have so few valuables and I was interesting actually, I didn't think about, I feel like they described that trunk of stuff as like her.

Yeah, and I did notice like the way the pants are constructed like his like Bo little section like his bulge is always like really prominent because of the way the pants are so yeah.

1:11:40 So I can I was even noticing, I'm like, that's a little weird. Like a baby, I noticed it before, not weird, but like, is that accurate to the period? I got it because I don't think they'd go out of their way. This so display it in such a manner of other way. No. And I love that Mila, reacted to that. So that's, that's her. She does not like inappropriate, that's her word. Yeah. So this next thing, it's just a lovely little part in the film, just one line, but it was pointed out to me that it's something from fit.

1:12:10 On the roof but just slightly different. I had no idea. Yeah, so there's a part. When she's talking to DaVinci because she says senior in the middle of the, yes. So the line is good, may love a fish Senora but where would they live? And in Federal in the roof, it was a bird made of a fish, but where would they build a home together? So same idea. Same concept. And I couldn't figure out if it was like from something else before that, but the line is just slightly different. Yeah. Obviously I have no idea.

1:12:39 The only thing I think about what that line is that I remember Entertainment Weekly, put it in some like worst lines of the Year. Well, no made. Yeah. And we have like a doodle from it. Add rudel where it's like, Drew and in Ever After and then there's birds and fish like, swimming around her head. I'll put it on. Yes, please put it in there. It almost makes me want to be like Entertainment Weekly. Like maybe you should have known that, it was from Fiddler on the Roof. Yeah, that's it. I don't know what I'm thinking now.

1:13:14 Yeah. Like and also when I search for the line it was just coming up with all kinds of stuff about Drew saying and I'm like, she didn't say it's a character. Oh God. Now it's a trail was like there was like a misinformation happening, you know? I love that sober. Like I think it's a lovely line and it says a lot because, you know, it's like basically saying, like we're different classes. How do we do this? Yeah, so it's, I mean, I think it's lovely, but I also love that this was pointed out to me.

1:13:40 So I think it's really neat to know well and also that's like I'm going to make you wings now. He turns her into a bird for the mask. Like yeah, that makes sense. That's sweet. Okay, so we don't even really need to stay maybe how much we love the ball seemed like I I started to cry watching it but the scene after that when she's running away and if she's in the rain and the wings are like, you know, kind of starting to fall apart and she's LED Of sitting on like the stoop. Yeah, that scene is so gorgeous.

1:14:14 So when they show her face in profile and kind of like blue-tinted, yeah, visually stunning, although can I say, I've always thought that the audio in that like was clearly done later like it. It never matches them. To me, her crying sounds like I've to me. That always is like jarringly reacted by that. Yeah, I'm sorry too. Like crap on your Because you're right now, it's okay, it's beautiful. And you know what else? This makes me think I didn't even really think about mentioning this, but it's kind of funny that the, you know, the classic line from the ball is just like, I think everybody knows that it's like the ending of my trailer and of course, Drew has her breathe tattoo and I wonder if there's like an overlap there personally for her or not.

1:15:07 I feel like that's got to be the case but we'll find out one day. I guess to the list of many, many questions that we want to ask her perfect. My last note is just, I've always loved this, it's such a small thing, but again, this is Drew just doing like, really good subtle stuff when Henry comes to rescue her. But she's already rescued herself as she walks out, and she sees him. And she does this little like embarrassed, like, why do I look say? Yes that I've always thought was so relatable, like, that's the thing where you like see your crush.

1:15:40 And we don't know where to look and there's nowhere to go. Yeah, I'm sure. Anyway, just a cute little thing. I've always loved. Totally, it's, that was definitely worth mentioning. And this last thing, it is like the last thing we're going to say, and it will kind of like wrap up, but like in the scene when they're they show the leader DaVinci character painting her. Yeah. They kind of pan in and you see like studies of her face. So you see, like other kind of options, like other angles are very fast to it, and I started to go, like, I want those like, my mind was just like, I've never, you know, I've never really thought that much about like, what props I would want.
