017 – Olive, the Other Reindeer

But actually, I realize after the fact I was chatting with Brian who is a true be friend who was with us at The Wildflower book signing and I was like, dang we should have asked him like what he recalled about it and yeah but so we chat a little bit and I told him to pick a topic that he'd like to come on and be a guest for so cool.

All right, so this is a comment on Instagram from at ghosts of yesterday, okay. And they said, oh my gosh, I've been a fan of your website for many, many years, and so, excited to see you've now got a podcast. Congrats, I thought that was really cool, because a lot of the times, these kind of comments are people that were at least semi familiar with, and I'm not sure who this is.

2:19 It's not somebody, I knew of. So, yeah, this is really nice, this comment and last week's comments, like, it feels Like, people are listening that, we don't know. Yeah, and that's kind of fun. It's definitely at first, it was like, well, we know who's gonna listen to this if other people do too cool. But you know what? And speaking of that, kind of relatedly, we've got a lot of new followers. So if we've also got new listeners. Yeah. Welcome to the Jersey. Mm. And how do you drew? I hope that the followers.

I mean that's a follow-up but just related to these like random people which is really exciting. Yeah. Possibly becoming listeners is exciting prospect. I'm gonna I'm gonna read them to you so I hope you watch this but People Style. Watch I guess. That magazine you remember that was like a thing for a little while and then it went away.

3:45 It's like a Magazine from people. Yeah, I do remember that. So they did, I guess that magazine is coming back and they did a little thing with Drew called 20 years. 20 looks interesting. So they went back over 20 of her like pretty much all red carpet event looks over the past 20 years. So the first one was the ET re-release in 2002, which is like, feels like a more recent one to me. I know, I actually, I did now. I realize I did watch the clip because she's talking about the white Pants. Yeah. Alright, at least watch part of a clip.

4:19 It's just weird. That that's like the oldest one. If you go back, 20 years. Well, that is a trip and also the fact that when I think of that's the oldest one in this particular 0 because they're talking about 20 years back. Yeah. So I'm like, oh so many that I think of her pre that. Oh yeah, for sure. It's crazy. So she did say that her favorite thing her favorite look down, whatever that she's ever worn of all time, because she says, a lot of them were one of her favorites, but she said this is her ultimate.

4:46 Right? And it's the Golden Globes went from 2010. When she won for gray Gardens, which I love. That was that that like light blue. No. That was the year before when she presented. This is the one that's like nude and has to see an enemy on the shoulder and the hip. Oh yes, of course. It's so stunning. Yeah, I love that one. That's really cool. That's such a beautiful. That's such a beautiful and elegant look of hers. Like it's there's something about it. Actually I just realized okay it kind of reminds me of I mean not really but just because it's like a new dress.

5:22 I just thought of how like gorgeous the shot is of her in Italy. But it's his book women were she's very like that kind of food that nude kind of like shirish kind of dress. I could definitely see that there's something about that and it would be really need to do a comparison back and forth. I've never made that comparison until this moment when I was imagining the glamour but also liked the Simplicity and elegance of that look. Okay, well in the Golden Globes side and I can't Sit up in that was Versace.

5:51 Did that gown for her? Oh cool. Of course. That's just such a classic photo by Annie Leibovitz. Oh, any excuse to share it as a good one? So then on the Drew Barrymore show I think the editor of people stylewatch came on and they like recreated some of those looks like they had like models come out wearing like a modern version of how you could do those licks, which was kind of fun. But Drew said that people was the first magazine cover she was ever on. On it's like no not quite. I mean she did do a photo shoot for them so maybe it was kind of like one of the first shoes and on that scale.

6:31 Yeah I could be but if we want to get accurate, the first cover shoot she ever did was for Ladies Home Journal their December 1982 issue. Just so funny for some reso random this little girl, I can picture it but it seems like looks like a little girl. I think I've always kind of felt this And again like I'm doing this thing where I'm picturing it in my mind a little girl dressed as like an older woman. Oh, totally now I gotta go look at the picture because I think she has like a big old hat on or something.

7:00 I think she does. It's like mostly red. She's like definitely wearing a lot of clothes like this. She was like being swallowed by her outfit. Hold on. I'm gonna kick pull it up right now. I'm just picturing like this old glamour shoots from half the 80s. Yeah. So she has a big red hat on and like, A big red and black outfit, there's like a maybe even a shawl around her shoulder, so random, but I love it. And then she actually was on the first time she was on the cover of People magazine was, until November 12 1984.

7:36 So is that something related to Fire Starter? No, that's the one. The child stars one with Henry, Thomas, and Ricky Schroder. Oh yes, of course. That's a really, really cute cover. I love. It is acute one. Yes. But she's so Drew. You got it wrong. Sorry. Maybe You feature, your first feature in people to Petty and then I just took this isn't that big of a deal but Cameron Diaz came on the show to do like a little cooking segment segment. And they started talking about Drew's old house and they actually just kept calling it Curson like which, you know, is the street.

8:11 Yeah. And they just kept talking about how Kirsten had the worst kitchen, and they didn't really explain why it was so bad. But Drew said, She remembered Gwyneth Paltrow coming over and trying to use the oven and telling Drew. You're breaking my heart. What, what was wrong with it? You know what, when I think, when I think about it at that time, it's Drew was talking about, like, getting used to cooking years after. Oh, yeah, even think of her in that home, like learning to cook soups, I picture her in a different place anyway, so she went probably just wasn't using it and it was just like, you know, maybe old appliances.

8:47 Yeah, that's kind of where my head wasn't real. Foster to be a space for her to do the things that she would do now in the space. Like I think it's really funny. Yeah, I know at some point we had some images from the interior of her house from a Halloween party and be really cool to see if we can see the kitchen and make sort of a visual assessment. See if it's as bad as it sounds. Yeah. I just like to thank kept talking about that house because I think not that we ever went there but I have like a weird sadness that she no longer lives there, you know?

9:16 So yeah, well together, I think this is at least our third Mention of how sad we are. She's not in that house anymore or at least not in l.a. Yeah, exactly. Okay, moving on. All right, last bit, Jewish News podcast this week was her guests were to podcast host that have a show called chicks in the office. I'm not familiar with it. I looked it up. It sounds like they just talk about pop culture and but I and Drew will be on their 500th episode Monday, which by the time you're hearing this that's yesterday so you can go listen to that.

9:48 Now cool. The points I wanted to bring up is that she talks. She tells the story again, about how she had a fling with someone who had been out. Just a really good friend for a long time and he initiated it and she was like, okay, maybe I should go for this and then he freaked out and she's so mad that it ruin the friendship. And you know, where my head went, who my guess is on this because you had you had the speculation for a while. So we I think we've even mentioned on the podcast. Yeah, we have Possibly Edward Norton.

10:21 That's my guess. Because we said when we talked about him, that we were like, wait, like why is he been on the show? We should suggest that. I mean, I think we could still could but who knows it might just go on deaf ears because maybe wouldn't I don't know. We could totally be wrong. Like, it might be about somebody else. But I feel like, if we if it was another like good male friend now that we know all of her friends, but what other male friends does she have that we are gay but that's a good.

10:46 That's a good point. I hadn't necessarily thought Like I was thinking of Chris Miller and just like in my mind. Well, he's not available to drill. Yeah. So anyway, I hope you're not starting rumors that aren't true but I just because we talked about it before, I was like she brought it up again. Yeah, I mean somebody somebody can go ahead and fact check for us like if you have Insight, let us know. Yeah. And then the other thing, they talked about that I wanted to mention was they were talking about like nepotism in the industry and the whole thing of nepo babies.

11:19 And they wanted Drew's take on it and we talked about this. This was part of the reason that we did our like episode on Drew's early life, you can go back and listen to that. That's our episode number 8, goes through the years 1975 through 1981. Yeah, and we talked about this misconception that because Drew comes from an acting family that she just like had doors open for her. So she did say like those people were all long dead before I came around. And nobody was helping me out, and but she was like, but I've never really thought about this.

11:53 Like, maybe my mom thought that, that last name was going to be an asset like she and she's like, mmm, never thought about it. So, I mean, to be a so what I can say about, like, yes, the people were long gone, that would have had positive feelings about the Barrymore's because I'm thinking about like, if anyone was alive in the production World, it probably would have been someone who worked with like her father in the 70s or something. Right? And so that would not be an asset and it's not like her dad was making Phone calls, like, get my daughter, an audition.

So it's like then sure the like there was name recognition, if people were aware of Hollywood history or even like Theater history, but yeah, it's it is very interesting to think of like using that name. It's not like there was a feeling of not using that name and then also Jade, took that name, and we don't even know if her parents were married. So it's yeah, it does. She also felt like I was a personal asset to her. Yeah. Drew actually kind of like said that like, well, my mom was Also trying to be an actress and she was definitely, you could hear the little wheels that are had returning about the name.

12:55 But yeah, I just like, I read recently set somebody straight on Twitter about this and then they were like, whoa, but Steven Spielberg? Put her in his movie because she was his goddaughter and I'd be like, oh my God. Now that's not be order of things. Not what happened? I know. And I feel like that's such a confusing thing like to be like, oh yeah, her Godfather. Yeah. Spielberg because it's not like when it's and and things that they're like oh and by the way it was after ET, you know, lanny's not like religiously her Godfather.

13:26 No ceremony doesn't like it's a very in name only type of thing. So yeah. Anyway, I get I get defensive about that stuff because you know how I feel about incorrect facts. Yes. Alright, that's about it for news and all that stuff. So I think we're ready to jump into that topic. Great. Are we ready for our first episode of December? Yay. And this is the topic we both really love and I think have a fondness for one of Drew's only Christmas movies. Yeah, but the one of our there, only two, I'm just trying to think in my head.

14:14 Well, I guess I think there's parts of everybody's fine. That's it. Christmas but Hey, I mean, well we weren't going to do Babes in Toyland, at least, not this early in our podcast life. We're not ready for that. So what did we choose for this? Our first Christmas episode? Yeah. We're going to talk about all of the other reindeer. The Beloved little special that it's just close to our hearts. Yes, absolutely. So we can jump right into kind of the history of Olive and and the production. Are you ready?

So, all of the other The Animated Christmas special was based on a picture book by Jay Auto sebold and Vivian Walsh, I'm really adorable book and it should be noted that these Christmas special. The animation style was created to kind of be close to look like the book. So they didn't like, do a new style of olive. Like this was the olive as it appeared in the book. Yeah. Even though the story has some differences, like the look is a very similar. So they did a lot of work to honor Vivian, Walsh Has style.

15:21 The IMDb synopsis of the film is when Santa cancels, his annual flight because of a hurt reindeer, a young Christmas loving dog named Olive is convinced. She has what it takes to get Santa's flight off the ground and save Christmas. It's a pretty good one, it's better than the Whip-It one. Oh God, yes, that's right. Yeah, that's great. Okay, so obviously Drew does the voice of the titular character of Olive and she and Nancy chavonne in and flower films. Produce the film. They also did that along with Matt Groening and Claudia De La Roca who are the team responsible Behind The Simpsons?

15:59 So pretty big deal. The release date of this Christmas special was ten years after the premiere of The Simpsons and I have never really watched a lot of Simpsons but I know a lot of people from my generation as I'm sure you do as well. Ashley who are like massive Simpsons fans. I just started watching Futurama. It was just something that kind of came up my life. Recently and is a nice light fun show and 22 minutes is an easy way to digest content. So it was fun to kind of, see a like crossover is in people who've done voices on Futurama, who are also in Olive.

16:36 And, of course the a lot of the crossover in the crew. Yeah. I would imagine the humor as well as pretty similar. Yes. Oh absolutely. So that was really fun to see there also were a couple Other producers on the film. Two of them are just people who work in animation. I weren't familiar with, but Michael Stipe. Also got a credit as a producer with cool already interesting because he does a voice. We'll get into that. Yep, we sure will Drew had been speaking of lovers of The Simpsons. Drew had long left the Simpsons and we particularly know that she always really likes.

17:10 Lisa Simpson, which I think we briefly mentioned, although I had, like, I corrected myself. So I'm not sure if we put it in, but it whip, it. I was thinking that Ashlee Simpson. Oh yeah. Simpson like I was thinking that was a Lisa Simpson thing anyway, so but Drew had felt that if she ever met Matt Groening that she'd probably quote attack him. Because she had so much appreciation for what, he'd given her in The Simpsons. Yeah, so cute. That was so kind of cute and I can and I feel like didn't you have a story about meeting somebody hyper famous and that she like scared them with how excited she was?

17:45 I think she's mentioned that with a lot of people. Yeah, I think it was One particular one where she wouldn't say who it was. And I feel like you and I speculated that it might have been like Robert De Niro or somebody. I hope weird. I don't remember this, but yeah, we know that Drew's excitable which relatable exactly. I'm So then she did get to meet both Matt and Claudia at the premiere of Never Been Kissed at an after-party. And she said, she did go crazy. She did attack them and she said, she loved to work with him.

18:15 And instead of being scared by her, they called her within a week and they proposed With this project of olive. I love that. Yeah, so cute. I love the idea of something being somebody being like I'm so enthusiastic about your work, I love to work with you and then having enough like pull that you does to be like oh cool and the time frame on this because I think the Never Been Kissed. Her mirror was like the very end of March 1999. Yeah. So not so much time. You know, as far as like a Film Production obviously this is a little bit different scale but yeah, pretty quick turnaround because it was really In December of 99.

18:51 So that's pretty cool. Drew has said and we might have even talked about that, I don't actually know. I know we did Christmas had always cause drew some anxiety because her family wasn't traditional in that way, she never really knew like where she was going or what who she was with. Although we've heard her Rave about, like, spending time with Nancy's family. You know, there are certain instances in her life where things have gone to a more traditional sense. And she said, she relied on TV and Christmas specials to give her some sense of like tradition.

19:20 And routine as far as Christmas goes. And she was really excited at being part of something that was like, a new Christmas special that she could kind of give people. One of the things that always helped her get in the Christmas spirit. So, those likes me touching when you think of it that way, absolutely just think of like lonely child, who just had the TV and like, I know and I feel extremely privileged that, you know, I sure I have the Christmas specials but I always had Christmas traditions.

19:48 Yeah, it's a family. Yeah, I know At least she has that now. Like she's doing it herself with her daughters ashes, we know she's making up long time. Okay. So she said that while recording she spent weeks in sound booths and never saw the light of day, which is how I feel right now in the closet and that she would bring her dogs and they would just sleep in the booth, which is so cute. It's really cute and I love that they show in the future at which was mentioned later. There's a behind-the-scenes, featurette and I think she said something that made me think it was Lassie.

20:20 I totally think it's possible. Yeah, so flossie was like totally like laid flat on her tummy on the ground and Drew says something about it. Like yeah, she's just chilling over there. Yeah, and then there's a little tiny clip later in the future at where it looks like, she's kind of giving that like belly rubs. Yeah, the sound booth, it's really take some screen cap. 20:47 That's awesome. And one thing that's funny. Her dogs coming along, is that she was excited to bring all those weird dog noises that she would always have like hearing at home. She wanted to bring those two Olive, of course, which is so cute. And I know that you've got a note about some of the sounds later on. Yeah, she said that olives. Voice is very happy puppy. And everything is much more passionate and exciting to her like, no matter what she's talking about. She said, she felt so happy being this heroic beautiful dog.

21:19 She Like an insane person. And the key word she used was jovial when she thought of all of, which is totally accurate map. And I also love like Drew, you know, I think she puts words in her mind when she's working on things because I probably isn't the first time where we've been like this is the word. She thought I wouldn't she was working on this character and it is pasted, it seems to be jovial. Yeah, I'll have to try to think of the other instances, but we have talked about her love for words, right?

21:46 She loves the dictionary. Yep. She also. Said that she hopes that all of doesn't come off as insane because she felt so crazy doing it. I love in the future at when she's like she's not just like Merry Christmas she's like Mary yeah hurries me it was really fun sometimes I felt so happy I felt like an insane person you know I'd be like Merry Christmas. Listen, I looked like I was losing my mind, but I was just so happy playing being this character and then one thing that like, it's not like you guys hear this but every time fully you record, especially, because Ashley's had like, some stuff like getting over colds and having some allergies, like we spend, you know, a few seconds before we start recording like clearing at our throats and blowing our noses and we and we did post a little clip of her saying this on our Instagram.

I get all the gross Downs out just like, you can really hear it in the recording, which I can vouch for that. That's our editor. I think about that, quote, all the time, when we record like pretty much every time before we start. I think about that. So yeah, it's fun to like finally bring it to the Pod. Yeah, totally. So the special has a wonderful cast. I read this on IMDb and it was the first time I'd ever heard this.

23:08 So I'm going to put a little asterisk. Not sure if this is true or made up, but it makes sense that apparently. So we have our villain in this special, is the called, The Postman. And his voice is done by Dan castellaneta, who is more famously known as Homer Simpson. He doesn't sound much, like, Homer in this. Like, you can hear it every once in a while, but yeah, definitely has a different voice and I read that, he based that voice off of Vincent Price. And once I read that, I was like, yeah, I totally could hear that.

23:38 Yep, I can hear it. And also there were a couple spots where I heard Homer. Yeah. And I'd forgotten that this was the case and I was like, wow that's suddenly sounded like way more Dopey. Yeah, you know, it's funny. I just had this memory so when I was really young and I don't know what the hell I was doing watching TV by myself on Saturday nights, I'm talking like 7 or 8 years old because I know what house it was in and I used to watch The Tracey Ullman Show, which was like a sketch comedy show.

24:06 But that's where the Simpsons originated. Oh, yeah. And Castellaneta was like a cast member on that. So I feel like I've always known his face because I used to watch him when I was way too young - how funny. Yeah, I love that. I was excited to hear Joey. Pantoliano says voice in this. He's so good at this. He's so great. And it's, so he's Martini that penguin. He was basically like her sidekick through, most of the movie. Hmm, her meaning Olive and I've been watching The Sopranos recently, I've never watched it.

24:41 It and he is in the third season. Oh I didn't know that so far. Yeah. And he's really really great like he fits in wonderfully. I don't think it's the first time. He played like a mobster. Maybe that's right into that. Just right. And I'd also watched a movie called bound from 1996 with him and it where he's like a main character. I feel like he's usually like kind of small characters. Yeah. The fact that I'm like I almost feel like I'm doing like an accidental. Joey pants marathon and the reason I'm calling him Joey pants is like a couple of friends who talked about him recently like called him Joey pants.

25:10 I thought that was really funny, so great. He's also in momento that's like the movie, I think of, and he's in The Matrix as well. He did in the first Matrix as like, I forgot the name of the character but I think it's the one who like betrays. Yeah, the crew and this is the same year 9900. There you go. Interesting. And I like how in the future? He's like I basically did. My voice is like, it was like typecasting? Yes. Yeah. He's great. I also thought it's fun to note. That Ed Asner, did the Voice of Santa and then he got cast as Santa again later in elf, which I think is cool.

25:46 And then we mentioned, Michael Stipe has a producing credit, but he also plays a reindeer named schnitzel, kind of a bad guy who seems like it first, but he has this song in the film and druce has said that he gave it depth and beauty and soul and that they were all crying. When they listen to him, sing it, because he took it to this place that they I never dreamed. It could go, which is so cute. Yeah, it's really, really sweet and I do love that there's this kind of like switch to the character.

26:19 Yeah, so at first like schnitzels being like a little rude to Olive and then suddenly there's this like warmth that comes out and I'm gonna go get more into that in a little bit. I have things to say about this. You do in the future at which like we're not surprised by this, but we always love, hearing people say sweet things about true and this is like such a commonly said thing about her. Yes. And also like we know that they were maybe friendly. We, as we mentioned before. Like even though we haven't really seen candids of them together.

26:49 The right when when do is the one is the one picture. The one from the like rehearsal. Yeah. I've been 95. The MTV video awards. Yeah. So anyway, Michael Stipe says about drew that she has a giant beam of light coming out of her head and that you can't help but be a little bit blinded by it. That yeah, she's all sense. To like light up rooms and make people like happy when she's there. So really lit from within, like you hear it all the time with her? Yes, ever. We've experienced it we can become better for this as well.

27:20 Yeah, Andrew has mentioned that she was mortified to have to do her own singing in the movie and she was sure it would be cut out like she said, like it would be, it would ruin people's digestive systems of had to hear it through a system. I really loved her singing. Oh, it's so cute. I feel like it's perfect for the character and I think, I think it's actually I don't know like I would never think that would be cut out. I don't know. I think she's just being silly and hard on herself. Course I should say.

27:54 She put it this way, I forgot how cute it is. Yeah, it's darling. It's really really sweet. And then speaking of music Big Bad Voodoo Daddy did a song on the in the movie as well. Yeah. And so I thought this is fun because their name dropped in Never Been Kissed. Exactly. I'm like when all these like positive rumors are going around about Josie. Somebody says she used to date the drummer and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. When I was like making that note, I remembered reading something. So I went and did some further research.

28:25 This is all cute. So the band's didn't know about that, that little line until they funny. Yeah. Until they saw the movie on a plane and the drummer, his name is Kurt solder Agron. He had a big crush on Drew and he said that the Band all turned to look at him because they knew that he had a big thing for her and he was just floored and he said it's so cool. But also so torturous at the same time because it wasn't really true. Like she never really did date. It's funny in the olive, featurette he says he's talking about the song they do which is called Merry Christmas after all.

28:59 Yep and he goes with Drew Barrymore on vocals. It wakes. What's funny is that wild was watching that like I had thought about the Never Been Kissed line but then I was like, I I wonder if any of these guys like crush on Drew, like, if they were excited and also what I also wondered if they got to, like, actually meet her. Well, what I have with this article, I was reading was years later and it didn't sound like they ever did. So I do have poor guy, I know, and a had a funny, he might have been like dress a little snazzier knowing he was going to do his part on a Drew Barrymore project so cute.

When I watch the special, especially like, at the beginning, when the first credits are rolling because it gives me like those early Drew be day feelings. Yeah. I remember having this Seventeen magazine that talks about it, like reading it in my dorm room. I was a freshman in college and then I came home for Christmas break and I know all of all my entire jewelry collection at that point fit into one binder, which is love it.

So I remember like taking it on the plane as like a carry on. Wow. And I even this is so funny and it's still there. So anyways so like I just get all these memories of like that time like I was definitely I feel like I spent that whole Christmas break just like being obsessed with Drew and yeah you know this came out and it was just it was just a great time to A new fan was this when you were at Santa Clara?

Yeah the lighted go through some of the some of our notes from just like watching the movie searches Yes, so I'll just say I was like immediately delighted to hear that song and then I started taking notes about things.

I can hear perfectly matches. Yes. I noted right from the beginning and it's throughout the entire movie. And, you know, the more you watch it, the more you notice things in the background. There's just so much cute and clever writing everywhere in the background of this movie. So like the signs in the town like the stores and like the animal cages at the zoo like have the noises the animals would make rather than the name of the animal.

I love that we love details. Yes, I don't think we mentioned who plays her owner who plays olives owner. Yeah, her owner Tim is voiced by Jay Mohr and there's a part where he's asking Olive like if she's done anything dog, like today because Olive acts more like a little human child, for sure, a very precocious human child. Then like a dog.

36:12 And so, one of the things he asked her is, if she'd done any senseless barking today and she's like wolf, I get cranky about it. Yeah, like a dog. Yeah. Have you chewed anything? Have you ever? Yeah. Like Doug. Any holes that a member, but at the party. Loved was what she's like, what? How are your dog tours coming? Did you bear any bones today? No, Tim Chase. Any cars or cats fraid? Not did you even make a token attempt to tear up any flower beds? Uh and I haven't heard any sense was barking at all wolf.

So there's a piece of mail Drew runs into, you know, our villain the postman, and there's a piece of mail. He holds up at one point and it says to Bart Sampson. But like, of course, the internet thinks it's his Simpson, but obviously it was intentional. It's not just a little wink. It's not quite Bart Simpson, but it's really close. So, it's just a cute detail. Totally the next note, I may Made.

37:11 I don't know why I like this line so much, but when they go to the diner, so they're traveling to the North Pole and when they get there, the bus driver, who his name is Richard stands, which is a fun little play on the Pledge of Allegiance. Yes, I loved all. The stimuli quick because I, when I watch it, I was like, oh, for Richard stands for the for which it stands anyway, and that's voice by Tim Meadows from SNL. Yeah, I just love the part where he's like, olives, Like does a pig, little speech to everybody in the diner and he's trying to like get everybody starts cheering first because I live olive, olive, olive, don't despair, I'm Olive and I'm going to the North Pole to help Santa.

37:57 I'm the other reindeer, what's the matter? Haven't you people ever seen a small dog like reindeer before a live live live? A live. Olive. Okay. That's been like one of those things I always quoted. It's really cute. It's really cute. I had started to write it down that I was like, okay Ashley already know. That's funny. Yeah, it's really cute. I've once again, like other little like noises that she makes so there's a part and I think I was taking note of these because I knew that Drew, like, one of the things she loved about doing this was that she could bring some of those noises from home.

There's a part where Olive is in the back of the Wheel track right after the scene where she's dragged out by the postman. And there's a package that's addressed to her and it says I think it says from deus ex machina. Yeah. And as soon as I saw that I'm like oh Donnie Darko totally and well what happens in the scene as that she opens up that box after like confirming with the postman that it's okay to open the box that has her name on it and there's a nail file inside which she uses to then escape and the the definition the kind of meaning of deus.

39:37 Ex machina is an unexpected power or events. Saving a seemingly hopeless situation, especially as a contrived to plot device in a play or novel. Yeah. Like I saw it I was like wait what does that mean? Like does that mean somebody that would have had to place it before I read this and I was like, oh yeah, really just like placing something in a place I remember learning that actually might have been the same year when I was a senior in high school and 99. Yeah it's like used in Shakespeare a lot, I believe.

40:03 Okay. It's kind of like, well, we need to move this story. Exactly, here's the thing, it translates, the literal translation. Sin is God machine. So it's like yeah something that just falls from the Heavens to help you out basically. Okay. So the next thing I want to talk about and I've never seen this mentioned anywhere but it's just wild to me. So I'm going to talk about when they go into the bar scene which is like a great one but I want to talk about you know my favorite Disney movie is Tangled.

40:33 Yes came out in 2010 and I want to tell you about a scene entangled and I'm just going to like tell you in general terms and then you're gonna crack up as I'm telling you, sounds great. Okay, so there's a scene in Tangled where we have our lead heroine and she's on a journey and she has a male sidekick and he's kind of a, he's a little shady, has two little criminal activity in his past, okay? And they go to a bar Pub, whatever you want to call it Tavern. And when they walk in its full of all, these like shady characters who seem like so Bugs and they seemed really mean at first, and they start kind of harassing them and they started messing with the male side kick and then the female heroine stands up and yells at them.

41:22 And does this big inspiring speech? And then all the bar. Patrons soften up and talk about entangled. Big talk about how they have a dream and it basically shows how they're not such bad guys after all, and they do this whole song and then at the end, they help. The characters go on their Journey. Did you just described Tangled or did you describe the bar scene and all? I mean, it's like, plot it out beat by beat identical. I actually wonder if this might be like a Trope, I don't know. It's so similar start to finish and I looked it up.

42:01 There's nobody, who worked on both movies, like in the production. Yeah. I think it's possible. Maybe. And maybe it was even like a subconscious thing, maybe, The writers of the film like had seen all live at one point, and it just like, it was in their brain. Yeah, but I just think it's a really big coincidence. How many similarities? But I love it. I love both Yankees. I love both scenes and I noticed it years ago and I was like, huh? That's interesting. I love it. I love when there's just like a random random like feeling that something really feels inspired by.

And you have a couple other little like cute things that you notice. Yeah, I always loved how, Okay, so once all of gets to the North Pole spoilers, if anyone is listening and hasn't watched and she's talking to Santa and like his whole kind of team is around and they're kind of like by the reindeer Stables I guess. And you can see blitzen's, little stable and his leg is in a cast.

43:10 It's like sticking up because he's the one that was injured. It's sticking up and it's kind of like waving slightly. I grab it with this really cute. Yeah and then I love the part. I don't know why I love the part where they're chasing after the postman in Santa's sleigh and she comes up to the side of his truck when he's driving. And she goes haha, give back the presents. A line that I love that kind of felt like it helped me relate Drew to her Olive character. Is that towards the end? She's being kind of like thanked for what she did.

43:55 I don't remember if it was by Santa or who but olive says, that all she did was convince, everyone else to do their best. And I feel like that's something about Drew, like, she always just wants people to, like, be like excited to do the work that they do. Yeah. Yeah, like so I just, I was just like, ahh, that feels like Drew well. I gotta hand it to you. All of you Saved Christmas. No, I only convinced everyone else to do their best. Oh, don't you be so modest, Olive. You were great. It really does and like, not taking full credit, just like, it's like, it wasn't because of you guys, you like.

44:31 And I like saying, like, how great her cast her crew is on anything. Yeah, so it's like for the character to say that I was like, oh, it's perfect. Oh, that's a great note. Yeah. I've always loved that last little shot of her dog house where it's like at her name, and the heart, and the antlers on top. I don't know why. It's just always been so cute. And then I love the flower films logo that it's at the very end of the credits and it like swipes across the screen with the sound of Jingle Bells as it comes on.

45:00 I always look so cute, cute. So all of the other reindeer are was nominated for an Emmy and the outstanding animated program category which is really cool. It didn't win. Not lie, but it's always nice for something to get that recognition. Definitely, and then, as we've mentioned, like 12 times, now there is this wonderful making-of, featurette, and it originally came out on the VHS tape. And I remember being really excited about that when I like thought at the end, because you even have to watch the entire movie.

45:29 Yes. All the credit. Yeah. And then it would go. Yeah, it wasn't there. A future at that was on the 1990s, six, like why am I thinking? 96, because of her black hair the like re-release of eat either It was a little like, you think LaserDisc? Oh, I thought I was on the VHS to are, you sure? Maybe it is. I think I like the other. This S 2 but there was something that you had to. Like, I'm thinking it was the VHS because I remember like either were winding or fast-forwarding to it. Okay. Yeah. You might your piping at the beginning.

45:56 But anyway, it's just funny, you like featurettes being on VHS tapes like this, what a pain silly VHS tapes in general, like, come on like Ali. They included the feature. I on the DVD release as well, which is much easier to get to And we just wanted to note because, you know, we know she has a daughter named olive. Olive was not named after this. The story of Olives name is that Drew was reading a baby book and it said that her baby was the size of an olive. And I feel like she, what she says that she and we'll never looked back on the name, but it was like, oh yeah, they left.

46:28 Like, you knew that's the name. She obviously knew it was a connection to various the character she had played before. And I think she also subconsciously wanted to name her daughter after me. Oh, right. Right. That's a great of your last. Yeah, my last, I don't know, but I guess people in our last name I can figure it out. Figured out. My name has Olive in it. I think that was the main reason actually. Yeah. For sure. For sure. We are deeply loved. Yeah. And my last name is not Frankie so darn.

47:02 Okay, we just want to quickly sum this up with talking about some of the other voiceover work. Drew, has done to me. This is my favorite eye. I think this is the best one. Yeah, it could be just because of the time it came out and where I was at in my fandom but this is my favorite. Yeah. Do you agree? Yeah, I enjoy it. The most, I actually we can, we can list some of them right now, but I feel like the others, I either have not seen them or I've seen them once once. Yeah. I think I've seen the meat once so she did a movie in 1985 it might have been on TV or might have been like a direct-to-video but it certainly wasn't the a trickle and it was called star fairies.

47:39 Yep. I've Seen it once, I barely remember it and then in 2000 she did kind of like a Sci-Fi animated thing called Titan a.e. alongside who, who was the other nasty man? I think. Yeah, I think you're right. So weird. I've only seen that once to. I saw it in the theaters and it didn't like make an impression on me. Yeah, I might even have like, a figure of her character, or do something like that in our memorabilia weird. And then in 2006, she did. The voice in Curious George. She was like, the love interest of, Man in the Yellow Hat, who has done by Will Ferrell that one.

48:17 I've seen a couple times because I, it is really funny. Like, I remember laughing a lot in that one. Yeah, it's cute, but maybe, it's, maybe, I'm thinking back to why we love all of its, like, she is throughout the whole film. Yeah, I don't know, it definitely the entire nation is to, that's not a good reason. So this one, I've never seen. I don't really have much shame buttocks. I don't have a huge amount of interest in it, but in 2008, she did The Voice. She's the voice of a chihuahua in Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

48:43 Another dog. Yeah that's a good point. That's probably why she agreed to do it. Honestly just probably like great. I've done this. I love dogs. Yeah, I've only seen that once again. I have like almost no memory of it. She's like a spoiled obviously like the title tells you right there and she's like, a spoiled dog who ends up having to go on some adventure with the dog played by George Lopez. That's right.

49:10 And then, as far as TV, she's done quite a few episodes of Family Guy, 12 episodes. So, I can't remember who her first character was. I think like a teacher but then she had a reoccurring character named Jillian, who was like, an airhead girlfriend of Brian, the dog, weirdly enough but she wasn't a dog, that's right. And then this last one, I'm sure is related to having done this work. She was on The Simpsons in. Yeah, both 2000 and 2020 to in 2000. The first time the druze on The Simpsons, she played Krusty's long-lost daughter and then this year, she had a little thing where she actually was herself as the host of The Drew Barrymore show.

49:58 Like it was a guys, you don't need to see that we talked about this I think in episode 11 because it was a scream related and we just did her scream episode. Yeah, we I think I've seen a clip of it. Okay. Yeah. There might have been a really short clip that there was like a commercial for it, that's probably what it was. Yeah, really cool. So that kind of wraps up our discussion of all of the other reindeer. No, such a good one, such a great way to kick off the holiday season. It's really funny and In clever, like, there's so many like fun little moments. This is not like necessarily just for kids, like, adults will get a lot of joy out of this. Absolutely. I mean, if you, if you know the Simpsons, you kind of know what, that, how that kind of pans out in that kind of show, it feels like it's by the best writers like it. It happens eiling.
